I have a Tama Starclassic Performer 1st Gen Mahogany/Birch. I've always loved Mahogany and I think Birch compliments it very well. Nice balance of warmth and punch. Those sound great! Nice score!

Thanks Shawn. Great tips and history. Nice large collection now. I too was and am interested in American made gear. The MIJ stuff really springboarded the better innovation and production of drum gear from the mid to late 70's on. If your selective you can find some interesting stuff.

Thanks bud! Ever changing collection haha and for sure. It's funny how Japanese manufacturers were just building cheap knock off sets in the 60's early 70's while the American manufacturers were at their peak then flash forward to the late 70's through the 80's while the American brands were in decline the Japanese manufacturers were spearheading innovation, design and setting the standard for quality.

What a great find! Well done! Be a good guy and the universe responds in kind. I had this exact kit in black, complete with the telescoping boom stands. It was my second kit, replacing my pearl exports. while the same style of kit @ the beginner to intermediate price point, it offered the additonal 10" tom to the traditional 12, 13, 16, 22 configuration of that era, and it was MILES ahead of the exports! Just look at those interiors!! The 6.5x14 snare that came with this kit was a million dollar sounding snare to boot. In the 80's, all the best players played Yamaha drums. Vinne, Dave, Steve, Manu, Peter, etc. Thanks again for the great content and keep it coming!

Thank you 🙏 I try! No doubt these drums are higher quality than the price, even for what these sell for now! My second kit ever was a Pearl export I bought brand new around 86' replacing my 60's MIJ set which was a huge upgrade at the time for me and worked all summer to save for it. Things were definitely different back then where you were limited to what a store carried, now you can buy anything you want drum wise with a click lol thanks again!

I have a Ludwig SuperClassic kit from the early/mid 90s. 4 ply maple. They have power toms. I only use the 12, the 13 is so deep, i cant position them the way i like due to their extreme depth. Especially because the bass drum is a 22. Maybe if it was a 20, id be okay with using the 12 & 13 rack toms.

Yes! I've heard that a lot over the years, I'm kinda on the tall side and have raised my throne over the years to sitting in a higher position, makes it much easier to play large drums! Superclassics are great drums! I've had a few sets over the years. Thanks for watching!

Nice kit. Great bargain, especially with those cymbals!! I had a 1986 5000 series that I wish I could've kept, but same thing. Space. NOT power toms, conventional sized. That was a great sounding kit and built really well too. Not sure why some people talk so badly about Yamaha. I've owned a new set of SCB too and you couldn't touch that quality for the price from any other company IMO. You get the deals bro!

Only $600 USD?? 🤯 That's something like $900 NZD = a very good price! And to put things into perspective: David Raouf (a.k.a. rdavidr) had bought a Ludwig Acrolite snare drum with case at a Goodwill store for only $20 USD some time ago - I saw the same drum at a music store here in Wellington/NZ for $800 NZD ($540 USD) recently! 😳 I must be living in the wrong country when it comes to drums! 😅
@shawnsdrumcave

yup $600! i've had a ton of cheap acrolites over the years as well! this was a heck of a deal, the set itself 5 yamaha drums is worth about $1200 US then the cymbals, snare and whatnot more $ i hear that a lot honestly! we have it very good here drum wise, plenty of sets everywhere, they just may not be deals like this, they pop up every so often though! thanks for watching and take care man!

Great deal! The 8000s have a similar sound to the 9000s, as both have birch, but the luan in the 8000s gives their tone more air and more low end. An 8000 bass drum probably sounds better than a same-size 9000 bass drum. Steve Gadd's signature kit has a maple bass drum perhaps because the all-birch alternative is just too snappy.

Shawn, greetings from the Pacific Northwest coast. That set is absolutely incredible. I love the power tom setup as well as the beautiful color. Of the sets that I have seen you have acquire, I think this would be my choice. Do you think Evan Hydraulic heads would sound good on this set?

Thanks Greg! I'm not sure on hydraulics, I know people like them but in my experience they're a little to muffled sounding for me but I haven't tried them in years so many be that's changed lol I'm thinking EC2's but haven't decided just yet, I have pinstripes on my RC's and they sound great I just like experimenting with different heads. Enjoy your Sunday!

@shawnsdrumcave

They're good drums just don't pay too much, they don't carry a lot of value like a lot of old Tama's which personally I think is less about the quality of them and more to do with so many drums on the market. Many maple and birch Asian made kits have flooded the market over the last 20-30 yrs. 5 pc is in like the 2-500 range depending. Thanks for watching!
