Good music is just that, good music, no matter from what genre, era or part of the world. It's universally understandable, like a smile. I seriously side-eye people who only listen to one group/artist, I just don't understand how and why. The 'weirder' their playlist, the more interesting the person gets in my opinion, you just know that you'll hear some funny stories about how they came across *that* song.

You were dead on when you said "we like what we like". There's no music that you should have to feel bad liking just because someone else doesn't. Music is entirely subjective, one person's treasure is another person's trash. Because we form such strong and deep emotional connections to music, it can be hard not to be upset when someone else can't appreciate what we do. I love Milli Vanilla, Enya, nine inch nails, yacht rock, smooth jazz, heavy metal, EDM, IDM... it's all different and valid. Kurt Cobain was a legit fan of The Shaggs, who are renowned for how bad their music was. Never feel bad for liking something....or NOT liking something, as long as you don't begrudge people who love it.

In recent years, I have been preaching what you said about music being subjective. I've called a few friends on saying "(Insert song/artist here) sucks" and challenged them by responding that just because =they= don't like it, that doesn't mean it sucks. I've always had eclectic tastes in music and am all over the place when it comes to what I like. There are quite a few songs/artists that many would describe as a guilty pleasure that I just really liked and found out much later that some would describe them that way. Others... I knew the "cheese" factor might make some cringe. But... I would just smile and shrug at those around me, then play it anyway.

It's the kind of song where even the verses are catchy, Tyler sings the s**t out of it, and I really connect to the sentiment (when my kid was tiny I would sing it to her and get all teary). Does it reach the heights of Aerosmith's '70s output? Of course not. The story about hiding Starship from his brother is so true. We were much more tribal with our music tastes back then. I started freshman year if highschool in 1990, so figure I was 14 then. My friends were all into heavy metal. The long hair, black concert shirts and all of it. Forget finding a Starship tape or CD, if they found anything softer than Metallica you'd be suffering for it. Even later in our twenties when it wasn't a big deal anymore, I'd be listening to a… I don't know, Cindi lauper ballad on the car stereo in the summer with the windows down, and I find myself turning the volume down when I'd pull up to a red light. Gen Z and Millennials, there's a lot of absurdity coming from that group but I give them credit; their music tastes don't seem to matter like it did in previous generations. I see kids listening to everything from Black metal to hip-hop. Between that and their easy access to both listen AND produce and distribute music, you'd think there would be better music than there is.

We are both musicians playing many instruments between us both having learned from a very young age. Music moves as nothing else does.

I saw the movie Mannequin and loved the song from there, especially the vocals from both Mickey and Grace. I introduced the song to my 6-yr-old daughter and she loves it. Kept asking me to play it so I put it as the leading song in my 80s list for her. BTW, there is a cover in Cantonese (a Chinese dialect mostly in Hong Kong) that my daughter also loves.

Love this song so much, it had to be in my wedding. That was only 5 years ago. This song stands the test of time and there’s no shame in belting it out in the car every single time it comes on the radio. Thank you Professor for putting this video together with the great interviews that helped shed light on how this classic song came together!

Actually Don't Wanna Miss a Thing is a favorite song. It's not one of my absolute favorite songs by Aerosmith, but it's not far down. Makes me want to sing every time it comes on. Now understanding it's song writer lineage, it makes sense. I have never heard any pan the song. 🤷🏻

Thank you Adam for your total professional approach to this channel. I really do feel like I’m in a rock classroom! Music has touched your soul like many of us and you have taken it to a new level. It is a true gift from God that we were able to grow up in an era of such awesome music and talent! You and I share much in the way of knowing great rock music when we hear it. Keep up the great work! I think it would be cool if you could get Alex or Geddy for an interview someday! As a complete Rush nut, that would be most cool.

Jefferson Starship's Miracles is as mid-70's as it gets. I was only 5 years old when that song came out and for me it is just priceless because it is one of the few songs that I can remember hearing at such a young age.

I remembered this song from my childhood as a sort of corny radio hit (the young have such narrow tastes), and then in middle school (the 90s) started getting into all the Haight-Ashbury bands and fell deeply in love with Jefferson Airplane. I still remember how stunned I was the day I realized that this song was by them, it was wild 😂

I've had pineapple on my pizza, I've put ketchup on my hot dogs. I've listened to ABBA long before they were "cool" and AC/DC right after, then Techno, then the Statler Brothers, all in one session. My "friends" told me I could do a "lot better" than the gal I met back in the early 80's. It took us until the 90's to get married, but it's been 27 years now. So, people like your brother, when they tell me what to like, I tell them to go "F" themselves. ;-) Oh, and that's why I like your channel, you cover all of Rock, not just one sub sec of it!

This is one of the best produced songs of all time. I still remember the first time I heard it and the feelings I had when it came out, associated with a big crush on a girl. Those feelings I had of an emotional high have never changed when I hear this song every single time. And that snare drum is still one of the best ever recorded and mixed.

There used to be a few "guilty pleasures" that I secretly loved, but now that I'm 56 and open about my sexuality and life ... why hide the music I like?! A prime example is Rick Springfield. Once upon a time, I hid it because of its potential implications. Now, I finally own several of his albums and have no issue with playing them... Great songs.

Speaking as a child of the seventies, I listened to a lot of radio as a kid and this music was ear candy for sure. It was always really fun to listen to but when I started buying records in about 75 I didn't usually buy what I heard on the radio. There was an almost complete separation between what I liked on the airwaves and what I liked to buy and keep.

For years I've been reading comments from people who shared the featured song with loved ones who have passed, and I guess it's my turn. My mom and I must have sang this together hundreds of times over the years. It was in our Big Three Singalongs along with "The Other Side of Life" and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" by the Moody Blues. But this was always my favorite because it was a true collaboration, and I think it was hers too. Thanks for the love and the duets, Mom. I miss you.

Hi Professor! I've only recently discovered your channel and I've been having a great time reminiscing with you. I'm a sucker for a good unknown backstory.) This episode struck me in particulr because I, too, grew up in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) with a younger brother I didn't share much music with. (You remind me a little of him, which is a good thing.) For us, the unlikely first convergence of taste was the 1963 album "Rhythm of the Rain" by the Cascades. Not just the single, the entire bubble-gummy album. I'm still amazed but you're right, there are only pleasures. My brother and I both have much more eclectic tastes today and we continue to share new and old tunes. All that said, here's a suggestion - and I apologize if you've done it and I missed it: C-I-T-Y by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. I was a full-on disco/pop boy when I heard it, but I was instantly obssessed - and frustrated because I ouldn't find anything by the band on vinyl except the "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack. For a while it was my Holy Grail . . . and it's still my ringtone. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Yeah, like Mutt Lange, I kept noticing his name on alot of big songs/albums in the 80’s. And, like Mutt, everything he touched turned to gold. Tons of hits and credits to his name. I also really enjoyed his production on “Junction Seven” which was Steve Winwood’s last Pop album in 1997. Fun fact: Narada appeared as the drummer in Aretha’s “Freeway of Love” and Whitney’s “So Emotional” videos.
