As a guitar player listening to pop radio back then, you heard Rebel Yell and knocked you out! There were no other guitar players like Steve Stevens with that combination of raw energy, massive dives and bends, scratching picks, incredible dexterity on scales and imagination on other unique techniques that had not been invented yet. He is definitely a Guitar God and what makes him so good is that he is like Alex from Rush in that he services the song and not his ego. I actually put them in the same category in that they make their songs better without dominating the sonic space and yet the incredible artistry that Stevens exhibits is nothing less than perfection. Just Love it, the interview was so good! Thanks Prof :)

Some guitarists are overlooked because they are “sidemen,” or part of bands so big they become anonymous. Billy Idol has long credited Stevens as being responsible for 75 percent of the songwriting between them. He’s a dynamite showman and kills on electric and acoustic with equal flair. His solo on Rebel Yell is a true composition. You can sing it and it holds up on its own. A great touch on the instrument.

@MJ CS "under-rated guitarist" Says who?? Says you?? He created whole new ways for a guitarist to affect a song. Listen to "White Wedding" where rather than playing chords he's strumming riffs that don't follow the rhythm of the song at all, but have their own role. Then he recorded that guitar solo that WAS Top Gun. Billy Idol and Steve should have written a sequel song called, "Rock the Cradle Some More!"

@@cl5619 Yes, underrated. I rarely see him mentioned in top guitarist lists. I know they're kind of impossible to compile, but he really is THAT good. Also, your last point is spot on, and explains why he is underrated; the albums only show a very small subset of what he can do, and only in concert does he get featured in a way where you can really see what he can do. Stevie Stevens has been one of my favorite guitars ever since I became aware of him. I remember 1st hearing him on a Billy Idol album. The way he filled in playing rhythm guitar and adding nuances almost sounding like lead fills. Billy Idol's voice could get that growl and smooth out so well. The two fit together so well. Then I was watching MTV, when it was a good channel, a Billy Idol video came on. I was blown away. I bought every album they have made together and I've bought albums of them doing their separate projects. I even sent for Generation X 3 albums from Britain. I like Billy's material but without Stevie the sound, the driving force of isn't there, regardless if the song is driven then smooths out, which I really like and back to driving hard . Songs that are smooth then has a area that drives like " Eyes Without A Face ". I'm a guitarist and read about how they went about recording some of these songs. I met Billy in a club while in New York late one night. I won't say who he was kissing over to one corner or she was kissing him. I was laughing. He's very quick witted and funny but you have to know how to take some of his joking at least at that time. I've gone back and listened to the number of people that Stevie Stevens has recorded with and he sure isn't a one trick pony. He does as he says he plays for the song or artist. He can rip leads with the best of em , but I just live his style of playing rhythm and cumming forward with fills backing up the singer. He's the best at what he does. Watching Story Tellers was a great show judt to hear how the songs come about. Some albums would do that but most are from experience of relationships breaking up hard times. Billy's were about funny things he noticed going on around him. When Billy had his bad accident I thought that was it. But both came back together and continued to do what they do together, make great music. Stevie I love how you are about giving credit to those around you. You don't try and put the spot light on yourself like so many do. Making great music is a joint effort , to me a brotherhood where there maybe disagreements but I a. Good way. I love how Billy said that's a take and you said you could do it better. But you listened to playback and said yeah 1st take is it.

Rebel Yell is electric! The lyrics, sound, beat and feel fit like a glove together. I would have never guessed it came for a whiskey I have seen Keith drinking many times. The ray gun sound effect story was cool too, I thought it was a synthesizer. Fantastic interview professor many cool facts. More More More, lol

Thanks again Professor , for another ride in your time machine!!! I remember how much I hated having to wait so long between Billy Idol's albums, but when they dropped, they were awesome song after awesome song. And that quick flash on the Atomic Playboys album really took me back. You have such a way of doing an interview, it's like I'm sitting on a couch listening to a couple of my friends talk about music!!! Thanks again Professor!!!!

"Rebel Yell" is one of those songs that I just don't get tired of hearing. It was a favorite dance tune at school dances, too. Air guitar heaven!

Best guitar player performance I ever saw in my life was the first Steve Stevens & Billy Idol at the Toronto CNE Grandstand in the 80's. Most amazing playing I ever saw and he never stood still for the entire show. Constantly jumping, dancing and spinning like a top at high speed while playing perfectly and not missing a beat. I also saw the second show a year later, but he was much more subdued onstage, I assumed it was because in the earlier concerts he was upstaging Billy Idol. Everybody was watching Steve and not Billy.

I was a junior in college and this record was all over the place. I wore the grooves out on my copy. The sound hit you hard right in the gut. Great stuff.

I'll always remember when he moved out of his parent's he had an apartment near the corner of Bleecker and Broadway, and there was a 24 hour place there, and I always marveled at how even going out to get some milk for cereal at 3 am, or 10 am on a Sunday, Steve wouldn't leave the house without full rock star regalia at all times. Teased hair, sunglasses, leather pants. Amazing guy.

From a local, thanks for covering this awesome tune. In previous shows you've mentioned something that I recall being very prominent in the Salt Lake valley, the cliques that were formed depending on the music that one listened to. With the onslaught of new music being released in the late 70's into the 80's, the coterie was an identifier and a form of social posturing. There were the mods, wavers, punks, rockers and head bangers to name a few. When hearing Rebel Yell, or anything from Billy and Steve from this time, the first thing that comes to mind is the breaking up of genre barriers. Seeing Billy Idol live was mind blowing in many ways, but so fascinating to me at the time, was the bringing together of all the circles. Mixed amongst the crowd were rockers, punks and mods. Something I had not seen the likes of prior. Billy's ability to reach out and tickle the ears of almost everyone was a sort of magic. Their genre fluidity or fusion if you will, was untouched at the time, especially when music had become such a social identifier. ✌️

That's fascinating. And totally makes sense. I remember visiting SLC in the 1990s and seeing the kids lined up for hardcore punk and death metal shows. I hit a couple clubs playing black metal back then. That scene blew me away.

I used to hear this song every now and then growing up in the 90s-early 2000s and always remembered it as a cheasy 80s song. after coming back and analyzing it as an adult, I can definitlely see why it was so popular back in the day.

Here”s a memory for you. I remember going out to The Red Onion (Orange County Ca) and seeing this on the screen and dancing to this song. Then years later Im a grand mother my daughter bought a small retro record player in 2016 for her 1 year old. And the album with song on it. Keep in mind in 2016 Albums are not sold in stores everywhere. My little grandson would wake up in the morning or from a nap and point to the record player to hear this “Rebel Yell” song! Lol and we would dance like crazy. Lol great memories to this song.

I never knew how good Stevens was until I saw them on VH1 Storytellers back in the day which was him and Idol and an acoustic guitar. When he broke into the intro riff for Rebel and realized it was not synths or keys that made that lick work, just Stevens and an Ovation it was an enlightenment. Massive respect.
