The most snow I ever experienced was in the East Coast Snowmagaden of 2010. We had back to back storms in that dropped a lot of snow. There was snow thunder. Snow came down like crazy. I lived in Central Maryland and over a period of about 3 days we had 55 inches of snow where I lived. I worked at a TV station near the city and couldn't get to my rural county home once I could finally leave work. 55 inches of snow is a lot of snow! I could not walk in it when the storms had past. I had to stay with my sister for about 5 days, because the road to my house was closed, the snowplow could not get through. My 4vwheel drive SUV was no match for that snow. I shoveled sooo much snow while at my sisters, kept her stairs, porch and sidewalk cleared, her house heating intake and output things cleared and cleared areas for the water to go once the snow melted, directed away from the foundation and basement. My shoulders ached so bad at night, it was pretty bad. Everyday I'd have to redo some of what I'd done because of wind. After we dug my sister's car out I felt like if anyone stole our cleared parking spot I'd lose it and probably wind up in jail.. I'm usually a nice person but that was a lot of work, lol. The snowplow had pushed at least 3 feet of what became frozen solid ice (that was once street slush) up against her car, we basically had to chisel all the ice out before we could start to shovel and sweep. When snow is that deep you have to throw it hard to toss it up high enough when you shovel. I was really happy that my habit then was to keep a snow shovel in my SUV all winter, it sure came in handy. My, always unprepared, sister only had, get this, a kids plastic play shovel about 6 inches wide with a 2 foot handle, lol. I really feel badly for the people that got huge amounts of snow. I cant even imagine dealing with 81 inches of snow, that's crazy. People that live in places where record setting snowfall amounts are likely to occur are taking a gamble every Winter. I guess they are willing to take that risk to live where they do if they settle or stay there but it's still got to be a real inconvience when the odds fall in Winter's favor.

@@ljb1515 I think tornadoes and earthquakes scare me the most, no or little warning. Wild fires are scary too, I have been traveling and encountered them but never had one endanger my residence. It seems as if you pay attention and have a plan you can usually escape with your life if you don't wait too long to flee. I've experienced earthquakes, in California. tornadoes in Oklahoma, a hurricane actually called a typhoon in Guam, flooding in Maryland and deadly heat in California so far, knock wood no tsunami, avalanche, land or rock slide. You're not really safe anywhere. You should live in a place you love despite whatever danger might happen there.

I grew up in East Aurora, also in the snow belt (just east of Orchard Park). This was before smartphones and the Internet. Before home computers actually. The Nov 2022 storm was a good snow, but it’s not death defying by any measure. If you live in this area, you already own all the clothing and the proper habits. We’d dress (the prep is similar in effort to scuba diving… you don’t casually go outside into 3-4’ of snow) and go outside for hours when it was snowing like this. It’s just beautiful and raw. It hasn’t been very cold, a side effect of the lake effect. Not much wind either it seems. Lots of wind keeps you inside because of wind chill and anything exposed (eyes) getting pelted. You definitely can’t drive except for a snowmobile. I miss it something fierce.

How much snow must fall on the roofs of your houses before it must be removed. I've heard of roofs collapsing under the weight of snow. I live in Ireland and it's 12 years since we had a bad winter and nearly 5 years since we had our little blizzard. Most years it doesn't snow at all and when it does, it's usually a only a couple of centimetres. The little blizzard was exceptional. Seriously impressed with what Americans have to deal with weather-wise. Snow, blizzards, hurricanes, tornados, thunder, lightening, freezing temperatures, searing heat, wildfires, droughts and earthquakes. Yes, I know earthquakes are not weather related
@MintyLime703

Yeah when you think about it just about every part of the US has some sort of weather or earthquake problem. I'll take our flooding, tornadoes and bitter cold winters over hurricanes and earthquakes though. But even in the midwest we can still sometimes have minor earthquakes. And there's the San Madrid fault that could eventually go off in case any of us here thought we were safe from catastrophic earthquakes.
