811 Chicago, operated by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), is a free, 24-hour service to private contractors and homeowners within the City of Chicago's corporate limits to identify underground facilities, including gas, electrical, and water lines. 811 Chicago provides an important service that prevents damage to underground facilities, thereby ensuring the safety of those who live and work near underground facilities. Anyone planning to dig within Chicago-including homeowners engaging in yard work such as gardening-must obtain a “dig ticket” from 811 Chicago at least 48 hours prior to digging (excluding emergencies). 811 Chicago notifies all utilities of impending excavations. The utility owners then send out staff to mark the location of the underground facilities within 48 hours (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).
811 Chicago offers two convenient ways to request a dig ticket: dial “811” and speak with a representative who will help you create a dig ticket; or visit ipi.cityofchic... and create a dig ticket at your convenience. For additional information, please visit the 811 Chicago website or call 811.
