This is so sickening! That old fridge is way better for the environment than anything built today. I'll never understand how people can't get that concept through their head. If she's still alive, she's gone through at least two refrigerators by now that never stood a chance to overcome their carbon footprint. Electric wise, appliances pre 1960s use less energy than what we have today, too. She gave up a life long treasure because she was conned and bullied into feeling guilty for the environment. I doubt it got recycled. Someone pulled it out and sold it for a fortune. This is a news story about cheering for an elderly woman getting scammed. This is why I have trust issues.

Energy inefficient is a false claim. Fridges with auto defrosters were energy hogs, but that wasn't around into well into the 60's. Classic old fridges, even 50's one, with a fresh gasket on the door will use equal or less energy than a brand new fridge. Others have proven this. That fridge was worth more than she was paid. I wonder it was actually using so much energy that a new refrigerator was more environmentally friendly. That thing isn’t gonna be recycled. Most recycling just sits in landfills - maybe in the third world countries we ship it off too, but still ends up in a landfill. It’d be better if people kept old things and didn’t demand new stuff all the time. That is what produces so much waste imo.
