I had a 90 LASER and loved it. Never a dull moment with that car.

I always liked the Talon kicking myself to this day for not getting one I know they are essentially the same car but the Eagle Talon name seals the deal for me followed by Plymouth Laser to have the actual core Car ….. Mitsubishi Eclipse just don’t do anything for me even though it is the nucleus for the Laser & Talon

Bought a ‘93, best car I’ve ever owned. When he said “bright future”, wish he’d been right.

2-doors, turbocharged engine, manual transmission, all-wheel-drive. Everything I want in a driver’s performance car, and everything that the industry refuses to give us all together in one vehicle.

I had an 89 Eagle Talon. Nice car, fun to drive however I don't think they were well built. Many of those never made it to 100K miles.

I had the Mitsubishi version of this car (a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX turbo all-wheel drive that I owned from 1994 until 1998) and I absolutely LOVED it. Compared to it's V8 powered American competition (the Ford Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro Z-28, or Pontiac Firebird/Trans-Am) it was every bit as fast as they were both in terms of acceleration and top speed, but with the all-wheel drive system it handled far better than they did. While it had 25 less horsepower (200hp for the Eclipse vs 225 for the V8 powered Mustang/Camaro/Firebird) it also weighed quite a bit less than they did. I could not only keep up with a V8 powered Mustang/Camaro/Firebird from the stoplight, but once the road got twisty I could out-run them due to better handling of the all-wheel drive system - especially in slippery road conditions. The Talon TSi/Eclipse GSX would just STOMP it's Japanese competition such as the Celica or the Prelude. The interior was also laid out better in the DSM cars than it's American competition - everything fell right to hand just where it should be. You could operate any of the controls by feel without ever taking your eyes from the road. The instrument layout was as near perfect as I've seen in a car. IMHO, these were the best of the DSM cars as the later ones got to big and heavy - and in the final two generations they also got UGLY. The only downside to the 1st Gen DSM cars is the absolutely tiny back seat - not only were the lower cushions so deeply sculpted to the point of being uncomfortable, but the back side glass curved down and inward so steeply that it really cut into rear seat head room. and made the back seat a very uncomfortable place to be - even for shorter people. This car lasted until just shy of 300K miles - and it's demise was only due to me accidentally driving over an open manhole at 60+ mph late one night which ripped off both wheels on the passenger's side and cracked the unibody chassis of the car rendering it beyond repair.

I bought a new GTI 16v VW in 92. I loved the overall car, feel, handling. I checked out a Talon Tsi, it was indeed pretty fast. It felt hollow, not as fun or aggressive feeling, seats definitely not as nice. Now,a Corrado.. I liked the driving experience much better! VR6 was faster/smoother, but G60 still felt fun and easy to take turns with that solid German feel. Adults could sit in the back seat. Much more useful. I found these Diamonds got a lot of notoriety, much more than a Prelude. A Prelude or Celica wouldn’t be as fast, but definitely a better investment long term.

I love this car and I think it’s kinda interesting that the rear end almost resembles a Subaru svx. They probably have nothing in common just an observation.

I've always loved the talons too. Cool car and cool name. I feel like GM took a lot of inspiration from the talon with the first Saturn SC1's. If you can find a second gen talon motorweek I'd like to see that one too.

It was a great design let down lack of development: the transmissions were bad from the factory, the engine would burn oil due to failed valve seals, bad engine bearings in + 1992 models, the brake pedal could be floored without locking the brakes, rubber parts and seals failed all over the car, the intercooler would collect water and rust out, the hatch glass had little clips that went through the sheet metal and leaked into the interior of the car. There used to be a saying on the forums, 'Mitsubishi, producing the next generation of car mechanics'. Mitsubishi fixed all of this and stuck the drive train into their spectacular Evo.

The 1991 version was better with the optional anti-lock brakes. I would recommend the TSi AWD model if you want the turbo engine. I'm willing to bet that the 2.0 liter turbo 4 from the Lancer Evolution would work here as well. An all wheel drive 300hp Eagle Talon sounds good to me. What do you think?

I was more partial to the second generation. When I was a teenager, I test drove a '95 all wheel drive turbo with an automatic and it was really a lot of fun. Only problem was it had high miles and it built tired. So I skipped and I've always concluded that was the right decision. Even if the teenager in me was disappointed. The funny thing is, the Civic and the Celica never really appealed to me. I always saw them as the posers and the eclipse clones as the real deal. I think what killed the eclipse in the end was the fact that they changed the formula away from turbo 4s AWD to FWD midsize v6s. What I've always been disappointed with concerning the Chrysler division variants in Plymouth and eagle was the fact that they didn't use a Chrysler power plant. It probably wouldn't be practical by any means, but it would have been neat if when they had built this they would have somehow fit the 2.2 turbo 3 that they used in the Daytona and Spirit r/t models. With having a literally no difference between them and no real Chrysler parts, to me it just undercut the whole point of buying a Chrysler division variant. All it did was make people that are pro by US based manufacturers only consider this instead of a Daytona. If you look at the sales of the Daytona around the time that these were added to the Plymouth and eagle lineup I think it pretty much destroyed the sales of the Daytona.

These cars were basket cases in terms of repairs. You would think with their Japanese heritage, they would have been solid, but ask someone that owned one. I agree though, they were a really cool concept.

They were a hoot to drive... in a 'oh my god I'm going to go into a ditch!" kinda way. Had a buddy who had a top-spec Mitsubishi version; can't talk about it's long term reliability as he totalled it. But right up until that moment it was good.
