Great content. I'm putting together a presentation on elite/master level training and expressing how every piece of gear/equipment needs to be fully understood and mastered by the user. I came across this and this video in conjunction with another from Scary Fascinating to give the overview of the tragedy is perfect to drive home my point. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for the breakdown! I incorrectly assumed that the drysuit was just a surface suit. Without a connected inflator, that's basically the case, but it's an important distinction.

CMAS II For more than 30 years. I learnt to dive drysuit in Scotland. The inflation capacity of my Drysuit WAY overpowered my Scubapro BCD which was sized to warm water diving holidays. I still use and prefer that BCD. No inflatiion tube on a drysuit is criminal. As to whether it is DIN or another standard I hold my breath. I have my Scubapro BCD with DIN fittings I bought another Scubapro BCD with DIN Fittings for my wife 3-5 years later. For some reason, I was doing some tech stuff I leant her my regulator and hoses. On that dive her DIN BCD inflator disconnected, BIG DRAMA. After that I tested our regulator and BCD mixes. The old scubapro DIN on the new DIN Scubaro BCD disconnected if I tapped it with my finger. Believe me it happened. I still use those 2 BCDs and a lot of Scubapro Kit BUT I don't mix and match unless I have fully tested out of water on a bottle. Now that's advice. Let's get back to what the industry is doing to endanger the lives of divers. Now I learnt to dive in the time when Cousteau dived. I still wear a knife strapped to my shijn and holding my snorkel. People look at me and thjink I am a Neanderthal. But I'm also a fisherman and know what happens if you get a treble hook in you MUST know where your knife is. Now the Punchline. I dive with a weight belt as in 1990. It is rubber, can expand and retract even with a dry suit. It has a big metal buckle that any buddy can see and release. Yes I may carry a couple of Kilos in my BCD pockets to trim on early dives while I manage the salinity BUT the weight is on the belt. The industry is inventing all sorts of places and methods of weighting, most not compatible with air travel. Go on Industry, you won't kill me

Selling a dry suit without an inflator hose is like selling a car without breaks. Should be criminally liable

That's certainly at the limit number that tech divers train for multiple failures: non balanced rig/excess weight, non ditchable weight, broken drysuit inflator, broken drysuit zipper. I think most fold at five or six simultaneous ones. Rec divers really only train for one failure and tend to fold at two simultaneous.

Thx for sharing this point of view of a tragic incident.

One thing that the Second Amended Complaint does not discuss is the material of the drysuit. From looking at used Brooks drysuits it appears that they commonly manufactured crushed neoprene. While a completely flooded laminate drysuit provides no inherent buoyancy, a completely flooded crushed neoprene drysuit may provide a minimal amount of inherent buoyancy. This would not be significant in comparison to the 44 pounds that Linnea Mills was reputed to have been wearing. Lastly, if the drysuits had built in boots, that would provide a slightly negative component to the drysuit.

New diver no drysuit training, now way to inflate the drysuit , 44lbs of weights ,a bcd with inadequate lift for this diver/gear. The ppor girl was dead the minute she got in the water.

Yes a very unfortunate situation which will undoubtedly have an impact, hopefully for the better on the dive industry. The affected agency, PADI has recently released several requirements to help prevent a future occurence. They are mostly common sense, but still had to be said to prevent these types of things from happening.

Also a night dive, only 4 previously logged dives all in warm water, instructor not certified to teach dry suit, the 44 lb lead was non-dumpable, the dive center was already engaged in a wrongful death lawsuit at the time the instructor told her her setup was fine before entering the water- how they escaped criminal charges is beyond me. PLUS they tried to blame her death on her dive buddy (the only person trying to help her) and made the 14 yr old DM-trainee aid in the body recovery the next day

@@bbl2019 They avoided criminal charges because the investigation (the information the AG was using to decide if there were charges to be made) was extremely poorly done. Like my dog may have been able to do better, and he is a dog.

Tragic loss of life that could have been avoided. Why in the world would any diver allow the suit to be not secured properly, surface check by dive buddy and instructor ?

This was one of many revisions by the plaintiffs in the second ammendment. Another major one involved the person who was sued for selling the drysuit.

@@divezonescuba Unfortunately, my wife and I lost our son. Not in this manner, he was 21 which was anothers carelessness. My sincere coldolences to her family which they were cheated of their precious child. However, the instructor ( I feel ) rushed to complete the course without requard for their student. I am not an instructor but a great instructor will always teach with the attitude " this course is about the student " not the instructors schedule, number of students and/or their ego. It took me atleast a month to select a instructor/facility that i felt held value in its students which was 1.5 hours away. Needless to say, if you are an instructor please always remember its not about you !

@@jackjackattack9137 Sorry to hear of your loss. I am indeed an instructor. I am regularly appalled at the instructional activities of different shops and instructors. Many are just interested in how much money they can make, even if it is at the expense of student instruction and safety. I honestly don't know how some students learn anything. There is actually a local instructor who was involved in the deaths of two students on different occasions. Given what I have seen, it is very easy to see how that could happen. Yet he is still able to instruct for a different certification agency. I doubt any of his students are aware of that fact. A few years ago, I encountered an instructor in the Caribbean who was actually issuing open water certifications to students who had not actually completed the course. All certification agencies would improve the industry as a whole by censoring those types of instructors.
