History
Originally, the Celts had a settlement here, and at the end of the 1st century BC, Roman merchants also settled here. In the 1st century, the Romans built a watchtower here, which consisted of various buildings that changed over time. The garrison of the Carnuntum Legion was based here. At the end of the 4th century, the garrison was abandoned, later the Slavs settled here, who built more brick buildings on the castle hill, using Roman building materials secondarily. The name Devín can be either of Slavic or Celtic origin. [5]
In 2002 and 2024 the Devín area was affected by floods, the so-called hundred-year water. People had to be evacuated, many houses were flooded.
