Still so hard to believe a ship that size went down. Bless those men 💕

Thanks CUZ. Cool to see the tanker. Some of my buddies were still on the Mackinaw Ice Breaker at the time she went down.

It’s like watching a home video of a dead family member. It might be gone, but it lives on in this video.

0:35 is spellbinding! Seeing this very great ship when she was alive and well, doing what she was built to do instead of lying on Lake Superior’s bottom now.

Interesting fact. The ship seen just before the Fitz was shown was the Joseph H. Thompson. This ship was also Queen of The Lakes 6 years before the Fitz was launched. The Thompson was also involved with the Lake Superior shipwreck of the Henry Steinbrenner when she saved 6 sailors.

Sad when you think about her demise and the loss of her brave crew.

She was known not just for her size, but also her speed. In fact, it was her speed that helped her break so many hauling records over her 17 year career.

She was indeed one of the fastest. Even fully loaded she could cruise along briskly

It's good to remember those who gave their lives helping to keep commerce going so that we would have materials to keep our lives going. God Bless them and rest in peace.

0:26 The ship you see here is the SS Joseph H Thompson. Originally, she was the USNS Marine Robin, built in 1944, then she was bought and converted to a lake freighter. Later in her life, she was turned into a barge, still keeping her name of Joseph H Thompson, and just last week, she was towed to scrap.
