Here’s my attempt to run a 46 tooth 11 speed rear cassette (here a 9/46) on a mechanical gear set up. I have ridden the bike like this but indexing is definitely compromised. Over-shifting is necessary when climbing up the smaller sprockets and downshifting is slightly random.
I modified the GRX rd-rx812 rear derailleur by swopping out the standard cage with an XT M8000 sgs longer cage to best deal with the huge 767% gear range. Some chain slack still required when in small-small and big-big is still not really useable.
Basically, my take on this is that we’re truly at the limit of rideable gear range, at least with a mechanical setup. Believe me I’ve spent a lot a time experimenting with B screw adjustments and gear cable tensioning. Di2 might help as it prevents the selection of the 2 smallest sprockets when using the smaller front chainring but I’m not aware of a cage modification at least as long as the one I used here.
Негізгі бет Комедия 9/46 cassette (or 11/46) on road bike isn’t great. GRX crankset (48/32) and RD. XT long cage fitted.
