Your channel is a goldmine for wrestling tips. The format of having full length videos and then a short for each one is great. It makes it really easy to brush up on videos that you've watched previously. I watch the full videos in my spare time and the shorts just before training for ideas. Both have really helped to improve my wrestling. I'm hitting way way more takedowns, and it's completely down to your channel! Keep up the great work man!

Watch my stance video. Walk forward with your hands low and he will reach out. You post then at the elbows. If he doesn’t reach, blast double or get inside control and push pull to single leg snatch

I’m a 33 year old former high school football and men’s Rec leauge basketball player (was trash at both). Been doing Jiu jitsu since 2018. Every time I try to shoot for a single or double I always get stuffed. This video has helped my dumbass realize I have to clear the head, elbows and hands to have any type of success. Would it be possible for you to post some videos of actual matches showing good hand fighting? As well as individuals clearing the hands,head etc to get to the hip line? Again my intelligence is very low and your content and instruction is great. Would love to watch you critique and review clearing the hands. Just watched the ADCC match of Gincarlo Bodoni vs Lucas Barbso. It looked like Gincarlo had a really good double leg takedown by way of clearing the hands or elbows. Would like to see your thoughts on that. Thank you again for your content. Wrestling is slowly starting to make sense.

I was actually able to do this today. Of course I'm just learning to wrestle like I said before, but my partner was holding a collar tie with the same leg forward and I just popped the elbow and hit the high crotch to the back. Not the safe option that you showed here, but it's a start. I lack confidence committing to shooting in on the legs since I'm so inexperienced and I know that's why I fail usually because I only half ass shoot. At least it gives me a little more confidence to actually take someone down instead of chickening out and pulling guard.

That’s what’s up man! Once you trust the process, you will continue to open up your attacks. It’s like anything…in Jiu Jitsu, I have things I go to from each position and what he does. Drill it a lot so that you get the feeling. Look at my video about how to loosen his collar tie by creating angle with your head. This will open up a ton of options for you. After awhile, they will get scared and start backing up. Then use what I taught in the video about what to do when your opponent is stalling. Osoto gari and the blast double are excellent when they are backing up, because they are on their heels. Drill it over and over and then you’ll have confidence from each position. I’m glad that you are checking back in with me. Definitely makes this channel worth my effort.

Hey so, quick question. What would you do if your opponent sprawls when going for the knee pull.
@josephbreza-grappling9459
8 ай бұрын
That’s a very loaded question…there’s so many options. If I have a good post on his elbow then he can sprawl all he wants, but he can’t get his chest down. I talk about this a lot on my instructional when I talk about inside position. I have videos on KZitem where I show this exact thing you are describing where I then switch to the other leg. It’s a specific technique that requires a lot of practice. You can’t reach for it or you will end up getting extended, which is another principle I talk about on the instructional. If his head gets lower than mine then he gifted me a front headlock. If he overreacts when I go for the front headlock then he is giving me an ankle pick, another entry to his legs, elbow pass, etc etc

@josephbreza-grappling9459 you talk about not catpawing or not reaching with the arm of your lead leg. Is there a difference if you're using the arm of your lead leg to push your opponent, while you're still in a lower center of gravity wrestling stance? I've been training BJJ for over a year, but we have a world class wrestler at my gym who says he'll be pushing with that arm all day. Would love to know your thoughts on this
@josephbreza-grappling9459

It depends. I don’t like when new people get into a rhythm that is easy to pick apart. They rhythmically reach with the same arm and lock out their lead leg. So, it’s easy to time the single. That’s primarily what I am referring to. And it happens at the highest levels too. Watch Dayton Fix vs Vito Arujau in the Semifinals of the 2023 NCAA tournament. Arujai timed it perfectly, posted at the elbow of his reaching hand and got taken down to his back. If you have already established inside position, then you can push all day. It’s reaching to make contact with elbows flared out and locked lead leg that is my primary focus here. I want people to understand how your stance is essential and you can take advantage of people handing you their leg on a silver platter. Rules can be broken once you have exceptional fundamentals and are aware of all the problems that come with reaching. Just basic wrestling principles I’m teaching here

The single leg you show at 2:59 almost seems like a "blast single" although I'm not sure if that's the name for it. Seems like a great alternative to trying to make the hi-c work in BJJ (weak to guillotines), while still using the penetration step as opposed to the sweep motion in a sweep single. It almost seems stupid that I've never tried this, but I don't think I see it often in folkstyle wrestling.
@josephbreza-grappling9459

That’s a knee pull single. Didn’t use it much in high school wrestling but did use it in college. Most of the time it’s because they are so good that they start sprawling and all you get is your fingers on their knee tendon. Then you use your forehead in the ribs to prevent them from getting head position back and/or getting your back out of alignment. Guys wrestling folkstyle, whether that is high school or collegiate have a better stances than BJJ guys, so you have to get it off the post. This is what Vito Arujau did to Fix in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. When fix tried to sprawl, he came to the bodylock and stepped in the middle like you are supposed to and finished him right on his back. Same entry that is shown here. Works at D1 which is where I learned it. Much easier to get in BJJ because people’s stances don’t protect their legs. They also often reach with the same arm and same leg, because that is what they see their coaches doing

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 Wait that's still considered a knee pull? Whenever I youtube it, knee pulls always have a sweep motion similar to a sweep single. Maybe the footwork isn't what distinguishes it but just the pull with the hand then. Sorry what do you mean by "so you have to get it off the post." Also, I'm also not sure if you have video on dealing with higher stances in BJJ. I know in folkstyle that's just considered a bad stance. But I find that transitioning basic folkstyle wrestling to BJJ stand up hasn't been as straight forward as I had hoped. For example, my hand fighting has suffered and I'm not able to get a basic collar tie to be as effective unless I'm really yanking on it since they're standing tall. Anyways, love the channel. Hope to see more videos soon.

I was referring to posting behind his elbow. If he knows how to wrestle he will have good hand and head position, so, I have to post behind his elbow to keep him out of his stance until I get my head in his ribs. Yes, you can do a knee pull to an outside single, but that puts your ear on his chest, which then makes his whizzer affective with his hip with inside control. This is how you get uchi mata’ed from a standing single. With my forehead in the ribs, there isn’t an uchi mata from him. No scissor sweep either. The reason your collar tie isn’t working is because he isn’t pushing and not in a wrestling stance. Contrary to probably everything a high school coach and many BJJ coaches teach, the purpose of the collar tie isn’t to pull his head down. It’s that your forearm is a good frame and allows you to push. It he pushes back then you can snap, but you can’t expect to snap someone down who is standing straight up and backing up. So, if they aren’t going to push you back then your collar tie isn’t working. You can blast double or osoto gari him. I cover that in my video on how to deal with a stalling opponent. People have to think about what the person is giving to them, not what “moves” they want to work. If he is standing upright he has zero head position for defense. So take his legs out. He is backing up, so it’s easy. If he pushes back then snap. If he reacts to the snap he is giving you his legs again. I cover all of this in detail on my instructional with Jordan Preisinger. Go to wrestlingforbjj.com and sign up, because when the instructional comes out, you will be able to get at the promotional rate. I cover differences in stances in different styles of wrestling and why. Based off rule sets how we can attack from there

Is basic double leg another valid option from that situation? instead of the high crotch -> into double leg. Or is there some specific reason why you start with high crotch
@josephbreza-grappling9459
2 жыл бұрын
There’s a lot of reasons as to why you would go to the high crotch first. Foremost, it depends on your level of competition. The higher the level of competition, the less likely they will be to reach with both arms and give you two posts. If I were to post only that arm and then try to go straight to a double, he would catch my far arm and potentially do the old cow catcher to my own back. That’s when he uses a defense underhook and chin and runs you over. Whenever you take a shot, you’ve got to do your best to get past his arms at the elbows to give yourself the best chance of getting in deep and avoiding danger. In high level competition, people will reach with one arm and use the other for protection. So, we have to time when they open up and reach with the same arm and same leg. If I sat on the sidelines of any Jiu Jitsu or highschool wrestling practice, I could point out that mistake at least 100x in a practice. So that post to the high crotch is there a lot. But when it isn’t, you need more to get him out of position. And 9 times out of 10, at the collegiate level, all you get is a pathway to one leg. I show how to post both arms for a double leg in video #21. You can post at the elbows, use double inside control, or snap off both wrists (if he posts on your shoulders). But you must clear both arms or you are going to get pancaked to your own back. We don’t always get what we want-we take what we can get
