I have 2 Clairs and love them. Easy to row and smell great. Also have Wedgewood. Love it! Pretty, fragrant, and bloom through out the summer . Princess M doesn't give me much blooms though she's gorgeous. Gertrude gives a good show in early summer then take a long break lol. So fragrant though. Just acquired James G this year but so far easy to grow and not fussy. Thank you for the recommendation. Maybe I'll get Lady Shallot this fall bcz of blooming habit.

I'm glad you pointed out that The Pilgrim blooms on the bottom and not just the tips. I thought about getting James Galway for it's shade tolerance but knowing that it doesn't bloom from top to bottom crosses it off my list of wants. I have a small garden and I require color in shrubs that rebloom and are showy all around since I can't get away with filling a lot of gaps with annuals. That's a detail you don't find in many descriptions of most climbing roses. I just bought The Pilgrim because it's known to do well in shade and I put it on the north facing side of my garden and it gets about 4 hours of sunlight. I just put it in but it's growing well and already blooming. Zone 6b.

I’m new to DA roses. I planted 6 of them about two months ago, and the Gabriel Oaks I got are already blooming vigorously this gorgeous hot pink color!!! I just got 5 of The Pilgrims for a total of 100$! Apparently they were last years stock, so I got a deal at the local nursery. Spaced them about 3 feet apart each on a north facing brick wall that gets a decent amount of sun in the summer but none in winter, so wish me luck. I spent all afternoon planting them yesterday and i am still tired today😂. They look great so far and these videos like this show the potential of these roses. I have about 10 other roses including Monrovia Nitty Gritty in white, Showbiz Floribund both of which were totally worth the 40-50$. I have a Duet Rose tree which is meh so far. And a few Knockouts which are ok to good. But I am most excited about these David Austin's. I'm worried i'm going to become addicted 😂

Hi! They last for a long time on the plant. I have never counted the actual days, will do it this week for you. But they are always in different stages of bloom on the plant especially because she blooms so voraciously. I have her in kind of a wind tunnel and she is doing quite well. The only thing I would suggest doing in putting her on a trellis. Mine was growing like a shrub rose until last year when it started growing longer stems. This spring I am planning to add a trellis around her to help with the long stems. I bought this plant in 2016.

Hello, I am based in San Diego and yes it is zone 10. I hear you about the humidity in Florida. That can be brutal on the plants. I would look into lady of shallot (I have it and absolutely adore it) and Strawberry hill (planted a new one in my garden last season so it's still tiny but still blooming well but need a few more years until I can tell how it performs.)

What do zones mean I’m in UK 🇬🇧 and never heard of this ?
@AmritaBhortake
Жыл бұрын
Zones are based on the USDA (US dept of Agriculture) Plant hardiness zone map and they go from 1 -13. The purpose of the zones is to identify how well plants will withstand the cold winter temperatures of these zones. UK lies in the USDA plant hardiness zones 6 through 9. Hope that helps!

Which rose do you recommend for rose hips?
@AmritaBhortake
2 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I don't grow any of my roses for rose hips as I want to maximize the flowers on my rose. I am quite diligent in dead heading the roses so that they don't form rose hips. Having said that, David Austin recommends Malvern Hills, The Lark Ascending and Tottering by Gently for rose hips. I have noticed that my James Galway roses also form rose hips quite easily. Hope this helps!

How you combat insects to your rose they are gorgeous
@AmritaBhortake
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Annette. I use an organic gardening approach towards the roses. The one pesticide that I found tremendously helpful with roses is Neem oil. I use it early in the mornings. That keeps most of the pests away. I struggle with Powdery mildew on one rose variety that I grow and this year I used Copper fungicide on it on the onset of spring and was hugely successful in little or no powdery mildew all season long. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
