Well...its not all of Sardinia that is the Blue Zone of Sardinia. It's the tribes that live high up in the hills. That are goat herders. Which is why they eat a lot of meat...goat milk, and goat cheese. Furthermore....all day long...these herders are walking up and down...on the uneven sides/soils of the mountains. And not walking on a flat road. Hence...those herders have tremendous exercise.

Physionic just did a review of C15 and suggested that no one should buy a C15 supplement at this time based upon the existing scientific evidence. He stated (and I am paraphrasing) that there is no supplement with such hype with so little evidence. He found the existing studies to be either funded by the supplement manufacturer or to to lack rigor or both.

The elements of the Sardinian diet are certainly important, but their longer, happier lives can't be explained by that alone! Their values (slower pace of life, importance of family and friends, meaning of life, spirituality, place in the community...), the conviviality of meals, the pleasure and importance of cooking traditional dishes from scratch are just as important, if not more so. I don't think someone who eats the same nutrients alone in a laboratory will get the amazing benefits of this diet... 😋

1. Meat and Fish • Sardinians consume more meat and fish, especially on Sundays, contributing to their high Omega-3 intake, which is linked to longevity and cardiovascular health. 2. Nuts (Almonds, Pistachios, Walnuts) • High in polyunsaturated fats and Omega-3s, particularly walnuts, which may help balance Omega-6 intake and support heart health. 3. Goat Milk • Easier to digest than cow’s milk and has a beneficial fat profile, potentially less inflammatory and supports better body composition. 4. Pecorino Romano Cheese • Aged goat cheese that is easier to digest and provides C15 fatty acid, which may protect against insulin resistance. 5. Chickpeas and Fava Beans • Rich in soluble fibers that enhance metabolic health and support a diverse microbiome by feeding beneficial gut bacteria. 6. Mastic Oil • Unique to Sardinia, this oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, beneficial for cholesterol levels. 7. Unique Red Wine • High in antioxidants due to its cultivation at higher altitudes, potentially counteracting some negative effects of alcohol. 8. Sourdough Bread • Fermented bread made from soft white flour, which is easier to digest and has a lower glycemic impact, promoting gut health. 9. Milk Thistle Tea • Known for supporting liver health, this tea fits well within the Sardinian lifestyle focused on well-being.

I grew up eating loads of Pecorino Romano cheese as a son of Italian immigrants. I always assumed it was from sheep as that is stated in the name. I gather from the video that Sardinian version is made from goats' milk as I guess goats are more practical for their specific region. The one I ate also had a sheep on the label.

No they're "both" sheep (in fact it's mostly from Sardinia even the "Roman"). No idea why he conflated them into goat, anyway it's a very similar milk (unlike cow) even though some people only have issues with one of them.

The primary reason the region of Sardinia that makes up the Sardinian blue zone has such a high life expectancy is their highly satisfying life, which includes lifelong moderate exercise (herding, etc). Followed by a very clean diet. With all this talk of C15 and better European health, is it time to consider that, rather than eating butter and other saturated fats as being something Europeans are getting away with. Instead, Butter and other saturated fats may be contributing to European's better health. C15 is found in high levels in many of the foods Sardinians eat. Cheese of all types, butter, fully fatted whole milk/yogurt, sardines/mackerel, and many red meats are all good sources of C15. C15 is so easily included in the Western diet that we can blame government admonitions against certain food choices for any under consumption. Also, A2 milk protein is prominent in many dairy Cow herds in parts Europe as well.

If you google 'sardinia wheat import' this is the first thing that shows up "Sardinia, Italy, relies heavily on imported wheat to meet its wheat consumption needs." also "In 2022, Italy imported $2.57 billion worth of wheat, making it the 7th largest importer in the world." That's billion with a 'B' ;) In other words, the special flour for Italian bread argument holds zero water. And blood testing shows that sourdough bread spikes blood sugar just as much as non sourdough bread. As far as fermentation changing the properties of the gluten- there's zero evidence that the fermentation of sourdough is any different to the fermentation of non sourdough. Stop romanticizing European bread. Thomas, if you eat bread in Europe, you can eat bread here. Sure, I might get it fresh from a bakery, but it need not be sourdough. Get a European loaf and double bind it- you wont' see a difference.

Congratulations Thomas. You actually went to Europe and saw some of the lifestyles (even if it's impossible to see all of them as they are very different). One thing that really annoys me is when the media portray the area completely wrong just to fit a narrative. You saw it for yourself and realised some things you had wrong, like bread consumption and looked objectively why it might work. That deserves a lot of props because most people do not have that integrity. I still think that some of the ideas and notions are not 100% reflective but it's ok, you can't learn about every lifestyle in Europe, and some of it probably comes from the twisted views of some of your guests and their own biases. An example is Polish food. That guest was the first time I ever heard anyone say that Polish food is notorious for low quality and I lived in multiple countries in Europe. My experience of food in Poland is the absolute opposite. But then again, that's probably because it's fairly easy to get locally grown food rather than the supermarket stuff when you live there as opposed to the exported foods abroad.

I make my own sourdough. I'm currently tweaking my sourdough recipe because it seems any grains of not fermented cause issues. I recently added home made bean flour from food pantry beans, probiotic fiber, and almond flour to my sourdough to minimize the wheat and gluten. Its helped. Right now I'm trying out homemade rice flour in a batch I'm fermenting for 48 hours instead of 24. I did 1 cup ratio each of starter, rice flour, bean flour, and water. I did add a bit of bakers yeast that I eyeballed. I did add about half the dough back into the I think 2-3 gallon pickle jar I've got my starter in and am fermenting that for 48 hours before feeding too. Btw I make my own starter primarily with wild yeast from my own ferments. Currently used some home made water keifer for that though I've used brine from veggie ferments, fruit vinegar, and even komboocha in the past. I may have to start making sourdough starter discard flatbread soon because the jar is getting awful full and with me being pretty low carb I can't eat enough large loads fast enough to use it every day or two. Though making a bunch of flatbreads and freezing them I think would be a good solution. That and sharing with some friends and family.
