It's so cool that you also started learning Thai!🥰 I started learning Thai with my Italki teacher about one year ago but I'm still struggling with the Thai alphabet. The tones can be so confusing, especially since finding a complete structured table that explains all the tone possibilities is very challenging and resources are scarce. My teacher made me the perfect table so I'm finally getting the hang of it, but from all the languages I have learned/am learning so far, this is without a doubt the most difficult one (but also the one with the best bl series ;p). If you're ever interested in exchanging resources or fun Thai content, let me know! I have lots I could recommend you already 🤩

Hi Lindie. I have been learning Thai for 3 years while living in the US, and it is not as hard as it first feels like. After a while you will get used to the tone rules by practicing reading. The rules are vey helpful as you can see the tone of a word by the way it is spelled and you don't have to memorize the tones of each word like you need to do in Mandarin or Cantonese. There is a fairly inexpensive book by Arthit Juyaso called "Read Thai in 10 Days" that I found very helpful, especially when it comes to consonant clusters. Also, if you like ละครไทย, try "Tunnel" and "Insomnia". They are pretty good. For TV shows I personally like ร้องข้ามกำแพง (The Wall Song) and หัวท้ายตายก่อน (The First and Last), although they will be super hard to understand for beginners.

One of the HARDEST habits to get out of when learning Japanese for me was writing Romaji. I kept the mindset of "Oh, I don't need that, that's not important", because I had expected the alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) to be like the ABCs, but BOY was I wrong! If your target language has a different writing system, don't think "oh, that's WAY too hard for me to learn, so I just won't learn it" but instead just do it! It only took me a day and half to memorize both Hiragana and Katakana and an extra day to maintain both without the help of any chart. Kanji came later. Always worry about Kanji later. Have fun on your language journey!

I began learning Thai around a month ago, and I would say my main problem is that I don't entirely know how to go about learning grammar. Like you said, people use different versions of the romanization of Thai, and because of that, I ended up teaching myself to read and write (I for some reason struggle with recognizing vowels). So I just read short stories and try to learn the grammar from that. I am only able to use free resources, so I wonder how far I can go with it. But your videos centered around Thai are fun to watch, especially with how you seem like Thai is throwing you around every chance it gets lol.

I am starting Thai in December. I already figured out that the writing would be one of the tough parts because of the number of chaaracters and how similar many of them are. So I am pre-learning the letters. I have an app named Write Thai and it is super simple. You just trace the letters and hear their sounds. After Japanese, I think it helps if I can read before I start learning. For me, romanization also makes my pronunciation worse, so I like to avoid it. Thanks for this list. Iam going after Thai as an intensive process too, so this should help a lot. Got a lifetime subscription to Drops, so definitely dustign that off.

I totally agree with your comment. 👍 I’ve been “pre-learning” as you call it since mid October after buying to books that were too advanced or made it clear I needed the alphabet as a better foundation. I too use the Write Thai app. It’s simple and keeps the learning chunks to a manageable time length.

Unfortunately, they don’t have a beginners class. Other options would be Chinese or Korean. Which one should I choose from? I already know Hangul but learning how to write Chinese characters would make Kanji a lot easier. My native language is german. Any thoughts? :)

Lindie, I think you’re being way too hard on yourself. It sounds like I started learning Thai about three weeks before you. The only word I know is Hello. I started with two books, Cracking Thai Fundamentals and Read Thai In 10 Days after a couple of Polyglots / YT’ers highly recommended the books. Both books are too advanced for a complete beginner. So I wasted a couple of weeks looking for a new path. One piece of advice that makes a ton of sense from almost every person who has learned Thai is, learning the alphabet will help you in the long run and gets you away from relying at bad romanization guides / translations of the language. Plus, from the little that I am understanding, learning the alphabet actually helps you understand how to pronounce new words. Anyway, I think you’re doing great! Keep up the good work and I’ll keep following for more tips and tricks. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I found the alphabet easy to learn. A few tips: 1 memorize the high and middle class consonants first. The majority, lower class will be all the rest. 2. I made a 1 page table of all the combinations of class/tone mark/hard & soft endings, then put a sample word in each box. I found it easier to memorize a word than the tone rules ( which don't make sense)

Hi all, it sounds like thai language is so difficult. I really had wanted to learn this language,, now I wonder should I give up on it?? Lindie, you mentioned that even hungarian is easier!! But I tried hungarian and found the grammar way too difficult. Languages like Thai seemed easier because the grammar is not as challenging. Do you mean, the language is hard due to the writing system mostly? If I knew Vietnamese and Mandarin and comfortable with tones, I was hoping this could help me with thai...but really love to hear more on this language and thoughts, ideas.

Hi Lindie, just checking back to see how your Thai studies are progressing??? I’m looking forward to seeing your update video(s). My Thai studying is moving at a snails pace. I was making (what I thought was) great progress using Rapid Thai for the alphabet, but reached a point where I felt I got off track, so I spent some time reviewing lessons and notes. I can honestly say what Thai letters I have learned have stuck in my head. (Yay! 🎉) Just not moving at a pace I think is normal. Then again, I’m not the greatest student. Anyway, hope you are doing well and kicking some butt with your studies!

Now I am in Thailand and I find many menu’s, signage and advertising is wrote in a modern font. So far I have found 36 of the consonants I need to learn again as the two fonts can look quite different making a major set back in my reading of Thai script. So be aware you will need to memorize both fonts. There also seems to be a sort of written font but, I don’t even want to talk about that

Good luck with your Thai learning. I also went through Banana Thai. I think it is good for the beginner. However her lessons became a little bit too slow for me because I am not a beginner. As for learning Thai reading and writing, I recommend you to start with the Middle-Class Consonants (ก จ ด ฎ ต ฏ บ ป อ) and add a long Thai vowel like (า). This will give you a middle level tone. Then add a short Thai vowel like (ะ) to these Middle-Class Consonants. This will give you a low level tone. By the way, ด and ฎ have the same English "d" sound. Thai words with ฎ is less common so do skip it in the beginning. Also ต and ฏ have the same sound. Again ฏ is less common. This sound is like the "t" in stop. There should be no air coming out of your mouth when making this sound. Practice saying stop by saying the "s" slightly. I recommend kzitem.info/news/bejne/146Nz4OYimupqG0 to help you to learn the Thai tones.
