Ugh, I forgot all my sources but there was a podcast that talked about public perception. Studies showed that people who claim of stuck accelerators are the elderly or driving unfamiliar cars. It was more likely that the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. A short segment did a test where you gas and brake at the same time. The brake is always stronger than the engine. But Toyota took the punishment rather than blaming the driver.

I dunno. This is just by recall, but I remember that Toyota did try the whole "it's just the floor mats" thing for a while before actually conceding that the pedal mechanism itself was at fault. They were recalling, fixing the pedal mechanism, and still making press releases that it was "just the floor mats". They did handle it better than GM or Ford would, imo, but they did try to play it off as a minor problem or user error until that line no longer flew.

A long time ago, a friend of my grandpa had an Alfa Romeo Alfetta. One day, the car was about one year old, he forgot to put the handbrake on when he parked it. The car then rolled down the slope to a underground car park, hit the wall with about 10 km/h - and burst into flames. Why? As we all know, the Italians invented electricity. And in the Alfetta, the battery sits just a few inches behind the front bumper. The negative pole was balanced with the body of the car, so basically, the entire car was loaded negatively. The plus pole however was just a few inches away from the front crash bar. Due to the impact, the plus pole touched the negatively loaded crash bar, causing a short circuit and then a fire. The car was completely destroyed.

Your description of both the Pinto's supposed flaw and Ford's reaction is an urban legend. The car was no better nor worse than other cars of the 70s when it came to fire risks. The letter used by lawyers and the media to show Ford's supposed callousness was actually a cost-benefit analysis requested by the NHTSA which was evaluating the potential societal benefits of new safety standards and involved all cars produced in the US by all manufacturers. Of course, once litigation lawyers and Mother Jones got their hands on it, they gave it a completely different spin...

I've actually read before about the Pinto's failure. Ford engineers discovered a solution which consisted in putting a rubber bag inside the fuel tank, which prevented the car from catching on fire , but it raised arround 15$ the price of the vehicle. The president of Ford told them that the Pinto couldn't cost more than 2000$ and weight more than 2000 pounds(for marketing reasons), so nothing was done and till 1978 arround 4.000 people burned to death in this vehicle. Since I know that i don't look at Ford in the same way.
@WhoThisGuy515
6 жыл бұрын
Well that's almost correct, actually a max of 180 deaths were due to that failure even though some BS claims have made it seem worse. Look into any Auto Manufacturer and you will see that they all ignored safety to save a few dollars at some point especially way back in the 70s. Think GM being the most recent one with their ignition switches. When you take the $2 fix and times it by the millions of vehicles sold, then add the labor charges to change it out. Doesn't take long for a CEO to get greedy and ignore the issue.

A further detail about the Pinto is that the main issue was that the top of the fuel tank was the floor of the trunk. Since it was a hatchback, when you were rear ended and the fuel tank ruptured, the passenger compartment was covered in fuel.

A while ago my mum had a brand new 2004 Mitsubishi Grandis which would randomly start accelerating, one time she was on the motorway with me in the front seat, a five year old at the time, and my brother in the back, a 2 year old. We were at around 80mph when the car randomly started accelerating, the mat was not caught on the pedal nor was my mums foot anywhere near it. She panicked and started pushing on the brake pedal with the car then at 105mph and she could smell the brake pads melting, she put it into neutral and pulled over as soon as she could. Mitsubishi denied it was a fault of the car and blamed my mum. She then sold it and got a 2006 BMW 3 series. Smart woman.

I thought it was due to the fact that when an engine is being revved, the fuel mixture becomes more rich because the engine is accelerating. As the engine is accelerating the exhaust gas temperatures rise (richer fuel going through hot catalytic converters means climbing temperatures) and unburned fuel can reignite in the exhaust system when it reacts with oxygen, thus causing a fire at the exhaust tip (yellow Aventador in London revving its engine wildly and a fire breaking out - also on KZitem somewhere).

I'm a tech at Toyota and I worked through the "unintended acceleration " fiasco back in 08-09 the problem was the floor mat would get stuck between the gas and brake pedals. We would cut the pedal shorter so it wouldn't catch. But what he don't tell you conveniently is there was no electronics problem causing the car to go, in fact they couldn't duplicate it so they hired NASA engineers to look at it and the never found anything wrong. So what Toyota did is update software on almost everything so that IF it does stick then when you hit the brakes the computer will kill the throttle.

The outcome of the Toyota 'sticking' acelerator issue was proven to be down to driver error. It also only existed in Americans driving the cars. "More often than not, drivers who reported that their accelerators were stuck were inadvertently flooring it and thinking they were pressing the brakes. Data from many of the “black boxes” from cars involved in incidents of unintended acceleration showed that in most cases, the brakes were never even touched. The drivers were often in vehicles that were new or unfamiliar to them, or for whatever reason, they just got confused."

I will say one thing on the Key Failure recall mostly because I work at a Chevy Dealer and still have to hand out recall parts for this recall. the only time the ignition switch had the issue of turning off was if you had lanyards and such on your key chain. the keys, ignition and key fobs were designed to be a just the single key and the fob on the key ring not all the lanyards you can find and all your keys.

I'm not sure why I keep hearing it repeated that the Lancia Monte Carlo had no brakes. They removed the _servo_, meaning the brakes were simply no longer power assisted, which in a small and light car like that is no big deal. The servo in my car hasn't worked for as long as I've owned it and the brakes are absolutely fine.

New Toyota Hilux also almost tipped. And to add to the Jeep story, lets forget that they are built poorly and are really unreliable, the renegade lifts rear wheels of the ground on heavy breaking. So all in all, after all this, i would advise people not to buy Jeep as they seem to be shitty cars.

Hate to burst your bubble but it's since been proven that the Pinto was no more susceptible to fire from a rear end collision than the average American car of the era. My father had a '72 that got rear-ended TWICE, once by an Ohio State Highway Patrol '74 Bel Air and once by a '68 Buick Electra 225 and even tho it was badly damaged each he drove it home from the accident. Can't say the same for the Bel Air or the Electra as both got punctured radiators.

LOL, its so stupid seeing people like u in the comment section... "its pointless", well, tell me how it is a failure when it has saved alot of people? Cause it reacts faster then ANY human. Stop being so damn scared of technology, if u think ur 1960 Ford pickup is safer then any new car with autopilot u r stupid AF. Tesla is ahead of all of their competitors with their autopilot, i dont see u complainin on BMW`s autopilot thats shit in comparison? I think u need to read some damn facts before u comment. U r also not supposed to release ur grip on the steering wheel while the autopilot is on, Tesla is a level 3 autopilot, not level 5 which is capable of driving all by their own.

Problem with Tesla is it's a tech company, not automotive one. Let me explain myself, although they make relatively good cars, they don't have much experience in that industry. For example, Mercedes-Benz have S Class that can drive autonomously, which includes - acceleration, braking and turning, with a help of sensor that detects driver presence by measuring weight applied to the steering wheel. So, if you put some light weight on it, the car "thinks" there is a driver present, and it will take you to your destination pretty safe. I'm petrolhead myself and driving internal combustion engines is my passion, but it's quite nice when you "order" your car to drive you while you chill on the backseat. The only difference between Tesla and Mercedes is the latter didn't market it like it's something big, so the media didn't really catch on that feature.

You are seriously talking down General Motors ignition recall General Motors New very early on that those ignition switches were faulty and instead of spending $1,000 to real machine the assembly line to install a different ignition switch in the car they decided that the payouts would be better but what they did not realize is these particular ignition switch is caused complete and utter electrical failure in the only way to correct the electrical failure was to replace the ignition switch when the ignition switch is failed you would have absolutely no electrical available at all your tail lights wouldn't work headlights won't work your brake lights won't work your work and most people who drive General Motors cars aren't in the State of Mind where when the car suddenly shuts off on them they try to pull off onto the side of the road most of them just keep trying to go on this recall ended up resulting in the death of over 400 people 300 of whom were actual owners or passengers in the General Motors Vehicles the other hundred or so we're people who were victims of cars sitting on stretches of Highway where the speed limit was 65 miles up to 80 miles an hour where the vehicles were out in the middle of nowhere and there was no artificial light to be had except for a car's headlights and most of the models affected were not equipped with the. Mandated reflective tail lamps so there would be car sitting in the road Dead with no electrical and of course the idiot owners weren't thinking too be looking back for other vehicles and use flashlights or anything or even put out flares or warning triangles or cones to let the drivers coming up on them know that there was a hazard resulting in a number of rear-end collisions with a speed differential of over 60 miles an hour usually killing one or more people instantaneously as well as over 10,000 more cars that just stopped working altogether and most people who were victims of this recall if their car was more than five years old they still had to pay either for the part or they could pay the labor charge they were told which one cost what and usually they chose to pay the cheaper one only drivers in the US who owned cars that were less than 5 years old got this issue fixed completely for free the exception was a few models of GM made vehicles that war more sport oriented or more of a luxury model like the Buick Regal oh and just to let you know the faulty ignition switch issue went all the way back to 1998 with the specific issue of the cars just quitting altogether in fact there was another ignition issue that General Motors had with faulty ignition as well as faulty wiring from cars manufactured 1990 to 2002 where for no apparent reason cars with just spontaneously burst into flames luckily though most of the time. Car fire got to be pretty out of control and nice and hot so most of the people who had this issue luckily at the time they were older already beat up crappier cars approaching their hundred thousand mile mark or above the hundred thousand mile mark in need of lots of other repairs and usually the owners would get lucky that the aluminum license plates would be melted to the point where you could not discern enough of the numbers or letters on the license plate to actually tell who's car it was I had a few friends who had these spontaneous combustion cars they said even before their cars end up going in Flames that they hated them and that they were unreliable pieces of crap so when their cars burst into flames in the shopping center parking lot they did not care cuz they were all driving older models that needed lots of work and to even make the car we're selling they would only be able to get a few hundred dollars out of it after fixing it some of them did have good insurance and their insurance gave them a small payout after the deductible but not much of a payout at all no more than a $500 payout even with only a $250 deductible even in America General Motors cars are crap some are super good and reliable and a majority of them are just unreliable money pits that spend tons of time in the shop I wish in 2008 the US government would not have built these idiots out so that way we could finally be done with General Motors the company of empty promises and lies the very same year they recalled the ev1 they spent over a hundred million dollars developing fuel cell vehicles which now they've completely abandon the project after spending over half a billion dollars on developing fuel cell technology and how switch they could have used that money to not need to be bailed out in 2008 and they will deny ever having designed a fuel-cell system or have in had a design team but there was a few shows that covered General Motors work on this had they not abandoned battery electric vehicles in the early 2000s and we called them all and crush them all General Motors would probably be the auto manufacturer to go to for an electric vehicle loaded with tech with a 300 plus mile range instead of Tesla being the company to go to plus as I said General Motors vehicles are notoriously unreliable I hear a very few people who have a GM product that have over a hundred thousand miles on it that have not had to have some type of major repair such as a transmission replaced or multiple alternators replaced which you shouldn't have to replace an alternator every 30000 miles or needing a new engine or a computer module failure that causes the car to Brick and not run anymore or a common problem for the past 12 years or so even on some brand new General Motors models is for some reason when you turn the headlights on the brake lights come on and then when you push the brake pedal the brake lights go off in the tail lights turn on General Motors is the only auto manufacturer sold in the United States that on brand new vehicles after they arrived at the dealership they are not inspected at all they just go straight onto the showroom floor the internal company memo for General Motors says quantity over quality lives are worth $1,000 a piece meaning they don't care about their customers they know they can come up with stupid advertising gimmicks to get customers replaced when one of their faulty product fails and kill somebody instead of spending $100 on making sure that something works in the car they would rather turn that into $100 the profit hope that the person who owns the vehicle does not notice or care and is too stupid to get them to fix it and if that fault causes the person to die they still don't care cuz they know that they will find someone else different to go ahead and buy them there garbage products.

On those runaway Toyotas, it wasn’t the floor mat or pedal that caused the problem; it was software problems that Toyota knew about the whole time. users.ece.cmu.edu/~koopman/pubs/koopman14_toyota_ua_slides.pdf The recalls for floor mat replacement were called such because it’s easier for public image than recalling for the real reason: spaghetti code. The notices advised that owners leave their vehicles at a dealership for several hours if not overnight, so their techs could verify proper fitment of the new mat. In this time they would upload revised software to the engine control unit.
