I sell exterior replacements out of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I stumbled onto this video researching a competitor window. I am proud to say me and my products are on the positive side of every single tip. I agree with everything he said. I’ve talked to customers who have had salesmen in their home for over 5 hours, past midnight in fact. They had to call the cops to get him to leave. He was refusing to. Definitely beware of high-pressure sales. You don’t want a car salesman in your home. (No offense to car salesmen). Good video.

Some extra manipulative things I've run into during my search. 1. Heat lamp demonstration- they tell you that their window is better because it blocks more heat but they are the ones bringing both their windows and competitors. I can't identify a specific competitor window by look. The u factor in the window rating already measures that. 2. They tell you that they have a special sealing technology that only they have- like a foam strip instead of metal- a lot of windows this or something similar to this is available if you ask.

Alside Ultramaxx is a higher end UPVC window, made for a triple pane IG. If you are looking for double pane go with Alside’s drop window, the mezzo. I would stay away from aluminum reinforced sashes and find fiberglass reinforced sashes instead. Fiberglass reinforcing rails are rigid enough to hold the weight and keep the vinyl from sagging and they don’t conduct like aluminum.

The only thing he mentioned that I would disagree with would be the sub contractors installing. If you have employees installing, that probably means your going to have a worse install. Any window installer can make way more money as a subcontractor so all the best installers tend to be sub contractors. Any hourly installer worth his salt at some point realizes this and joins a subcontracting crew. 8+ years in the window and door business.

Hell no. Sub contractors suck. There is not any quality control. Just someone who has a driver license and can drive to the job site and can buy power tools and cut a crooked line and knows how to use caulking like glue cause engineering is over rated when it comes to a sub contractor. Horrible. They do the worst quality work I have ever seen or spent money in to only go back and do it myself.

It's unfortunate that anybody can post an editorial such as this and be considered credible. Mark, while your intentions may be good, your knowledge is not. There are many windows on the market that vary in quality, and for the most part, it is people such as yourself that spread the myth that all vinyl windows are the same and that overall, they perform poorly. Granted, there are definitely some bad apples in the industry, but your broad brush strokes in this video are a slap in the face to those manufacturers and contractors with ethical business practices, which represents the majority in this industry. Your lack of business sense is also misleading. An ethical contractor will cost a little more, but only because they have a responsibility to stay in business to service their customer base for years to come. Please consider the entire breakdown when you bash the retail pricing strategies: First of all, the average cost incurred by a contractor just to get a 'lead' or an opportunity to even present to a homeowner is at $300 - $450 EACH time with marketing costs in a competitive industry,. (web presence, advertising, showroom...) The material/window cost (including fasteners, trim, caulking...) averages about $300 - $500 per opening, depending on quality of components. Any lower than $300 and this is when you run into the examples of the failures of vinyl you rant about because they are made of cheap, poor performing components because people, like yourself, have portrayed a replacement window as a commodity product and homeowners just want cheap, cheap, cheap. Also, consider the other expenses incurred by a responsible contractor: insurance, permits, rent/payment on an office/showroom/warehouse, tools and equipment and the amortization necessary to replace when needed, reserves for any necessary service calls, vehicles, taxes, as well as payment/commission for the sales person earning a living. Yes, there are unethical "gougers' out there, but a small percentage overall. It feels like your grinding an axe against past employers because you have been unable to keep a job, (based on your 'credentials'), because you firmly believe you know more than you actually do.
@Markcgreer

There are hundreds of honest contractors bidding to install vinyl windows at a fair price from a price-gouging lead getter. Customers should work directly with them, not the huge markup manipulators you are trying to defend. There is only virgin vinyl and recycled vinyl (bluish tint) anything else is false claim bs. By all means use vinyl for rental properties and starter homes, but make no mistake, vinyl is cheap plastic.

3-4 hundred for trim, caulk and fasteners? nah. here is the real cost. Interior caulk- $5 (does multiple windows) Exterior caulk $8 (does multiple windows) A can of spray foam is $20(does multiple windows)Interior trim varies but a typical 5' x 3' opening with say, 3 1/2 " trim and a stool might cost you $50. BTW you're typically not trimming vinyl replacement windows. Maybe new colonial stops or shoe moulding? $15 bucks? Exterior trim is usually aluminum trim coil at $90 a roll. It will cover approx. 8 windows, sometimes more. You're def under $50 a window. Our windows cost about $400 for a higher end double hung 5' x 3'. So with company expenses, labor and materials, charging over a thousand per window is reasonable. Try getting an estimate from renew by Anderson or Sears. Bend over. This video gives me the sense that this guy has an axe to grind. But cmon man, use the correct numbers to refute his bull

Rafael Iscoa yeah, that is a total con. Windows in Arizona do have a more protective glass from the sun with tinting, but it is only a $20 upgrade per window. Mark Greer What's your thoughts on Hanson's, Wallside, Anderson, Weather Guard and Magic Windows?
@Markcgreer
6 жыл бұрын
I personally would never put a vinyl (plastic) window in my home due to how cheap it looks and how easy it sags. If you must do vinyl for cost/custom size requirements, make sure the sashes have a bar of metal reinforcement to prevent sagging. Wallside, and Hanson’s vinyl don’t look like they do. Hanson’s is the only one with triple pane. Triple pane does improve r value from 2 to 3, but your walls are r-16 so regardless of 2 or 3 panes, Glass is still poor insulation. If you live in a noisy area maybe worth it. It looks like Weathergard might have metal reinforced sashes but that’s only in their description - I could not find a side view of the assembly. Majic (what a terrible gimmicky name for a company) appears to offer fiberglass windows. Fiberglass is the best material. It doesn’t warp, melt, dent, rot... it lasts forever. And you can make it look like wood. My front doors are fiberglass not wood or steel. Still don’t know anything else about the assembly. Price is a huge factor. Price gouging is common. Anderson’s main line of wood windows vinyl clad is highly regarded, but buy them from Home Depot not the Anderson store - total price gouge. Even better than Anderson, I like Pella for their Aluminum clad wood windows which is better than vinyl. But Pella Store is a price gouge. My house had Anderson’s from 1973 so it makes sense to slide Anderson’s back in to same opening sizes. Customizing wood windows is too impractical. Anderson does make a vinyl line I think, or is it fiberglass? Or both? Or maybe it’s discontinued. But worth assessing for your situation.

What would you get if you needed to replace old rotted wood windows ?
@christopherroth7239
3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Here in the Pacific Northwest I see plenty of expensive wood and wood clad windows starting to rot in 15 or so years due to the amount of rainfall. I have replaced many water damaged wood windows with vinyl (and some fiberglass) and have not had one customer unhappy with the look. Last month we started to remove 3 wood windows from about 1990 and ended up having to bring in a framing contractor to repair all the water damage in the framing. I was expecting some on the sheathing but it was into the framing and the sill plate. Vinyl windows from that time will have some warping in the frames and will probably never operate like new again but you are not going to find the frames rotted out. It's not as simple as "vinyl windows are always bad".
@joereeder
3 жыл бұрын
@@christopherroth7239 I agree with the aluminum clad wood windows, I do see a lot of Andersen vinyl clad and occasionally see some rot but way less than for example the Pella thin rolled aluminum clad rot. In general I don’t recommend wood windows either. I sell for Renewal by Andersen so it’s the best of both worlds on material, yes it’s not cheap but it takes the maintenance free perception people have of vinyl and all the strength of the wood the vinyl is missing without the worry of rot or swelling. Also you get the sealed glass by the glass manufacturer that is only done on wood windows, win win except for upfront costs. Vinyl does a decent job but not all are created equal and in general the long term expansion and contraction is the biggest issue

Agreed. This guy is a tool. Sub contractor isn’t a bad thing. Having a chitty employee is just as bad as having a chitty sub.

So what type of window would you get to replace 30 year old wood ones?

It depends there's multiple different scenarios if you're trying to fix a house and flip it then there's a certain window I've used for that, if you're trying to replace windows and get another 30 40 years out of them then I would suggest a totally different kind of window. Climates and geographic location depends on what window I would choose as well.

This guy is just rambling his own opinion. It's not like this with good contractors. He talks shady Cuz he is shady and is just shady. Bait and switch? I never heard such a thing. Maybe bait a hook with a worm and later switch to a minnow Cuz your buddy is reeling them in. That's not what he meant though.

Unethical to sell windows a 1000K each? More like you cannot afford the product and service sorry bud.

It’s unethical to sell something that costs $200 for $1000. By all means, buy a higher quality window that costs more than plastic.

Mark Greer all your doing is communicating you values of being cheap. This generalized statement lacks substance. You can say the same thing about the house you live in now. Or the car you own. Or the toothpaste you use.

Dominicanbulk It’s price gouging, bait and switch... exploiting people who know nothing about construction.

Mark Greer is it price gouging or you paying for a quality product that serves your problems??

I used to work at Home Depot. There is typically a 25% markup on items. 500% markup on unsuspecting customers is commonly referred to as “getting ripped off”.
