And this kids is how I ended up being a disabled veteran with a busted back. My a...hole platoon sgt assigned this weapon, along with the M60 machine gun with accessory bag, an M16 with M203 gernade launcher, a full rucksack, sleeping bag, trenching tool, etc. all carried together during every deployment. Thanks Sgt Ethridge!! At least I got a pension out of it, it only took me 30yrs after the fact to finally get it from the lousy VA (cheated out of nearly $1m). Good times indeed.

My first job in the regular Army was 90 gunner Berlin 1984. I carried the 90 with a .M1911 and my AG carried the sub-cal round and an M203 to mark targets. The sub-cal fired a 7.62 M60 tracer round for training practice. 47 pounds of hate. You could always tell the 90 gunners because after carrying that beast they always had a bounce in their march. One full ruck and a 90mm lighter. I was also on guard change over from Russians for Hess at Spandau .

Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 6th Infantry McNair Barracks in Berlin from Oct 1971 until March of 5 th 1973. I pulled guard at Spandau Prison from Dec 25th to Jan. 1 1973. 2 hrs on and 4 hrs off around the clock for a week. What miserable duty. 15 degrees in the tower and no heat. Got an Art. 15 for showing up late for wall patrol. Moved to C company and that is how I wound up at Spandau. Once on a trip to East Berlin in a staff car on a regularly scheduled visit I had Russian soldier point his AK-47 at me when he saw me trying to take his picture at a checkpoint. I didn't get the picture and we got the heck out of there quick. I was draft number 16 in what I think was the last draft held. How lucky am I? I was pretty much an outlaw once I saw what the military was all about. Started black marketing cigarettes and whiskey. Once a month I would get other soldiers to let me use their ration card at the post exchange. Every month a soldier could buy 5 cartons of cigs and 4 two liter bottles of booze. The Germans really liked Marlboro cigs and Jim Beam or Bacardi. Looking back it was dangerous and stupid on top of being illegal. I was 11 Hotel 20 Re-coiless Rifle trained on the 106 and the 90 as the trigger man. 2 years I will never ever forget. It was an incredible time to be alive and a wonder I survived.

I was in company C 2/75 Rangers Fort Lewis Washington in 1979/80. I’m 63 now. Our weapons squad guys had to lug that thing for miles in road marches. For night jumps chem lights were tied onto the 90 mm bag. It was shoved out the plane door and a “bundle chaser” followed it down. We would wear the flechetts in the anti-personnel rounds in our Ranger Patrol caps to look cool.

Coincidentally, I was in C 3/75 in 1987/88. I asked for 2nd bat to get away from Ft Benning but no love there. We passed the 90mm around on road marches but we all carried rounds for it in our ruck, along with 60mm, 40mm, and 7.62. A ruck full of wimp gear is nothing, but all that ammo was brutal. The funny thing is US military used these guns during the Afghanistan war due to financial reasons. They did not want to use too expensive weapons to kill those Taliban. However, I heard they really liked these old guns. They were easy to use, cheaper and effective against Taliban guerrilla. So sometimes, it does not mean newer and expensive ones are always good, but old ones can be better for some occasions.
