If it's in the inside rearview mirror, it's behind you. If it's only in the side mirror, it's already too close and you should not change lanes. And set up your mirrors in such a way that the door handles are visible if you move your head closer to the mirror. When you drive in the city, your head should be turning quite a lot and frequently. You should be scanning very agressively for pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, cats, trams, kids, etc.

I adjust my mirrors using the SAE method and use all my mirrors to judge distance.
Same here. Seeing the same view from all 3 mirrors is redundant. Blind spot size is minimized with SAE. But no matter what angle your mirrors are, you should never rely on mirrors alone when checking your blind spots when changing lanes. I do a head turn before changing lanes and with SAE angled mirrors that adequately covers the whole blind spot area.
@Un1234l

SAE method is great, except for parking. Can't get super close to the curb without hitting it when parking unless I adjust the mirror to the standard method of using the body of the car as a reference point. And sometimes when driving in the city looking for parking, you don't have the time to adjust the mirrors to optimize parking visibility. But that's why I leave passenger side mirror to see car body but the driver side I see the next lane over.

Usually I adjust my mirrors just to the threshold of my sides which I don't need to see than for to see cars barreling down. Still you get blind spots.

@irockipod

I had to find that out today. Thank God i was driving at a time where there wasn't much traffic on the road. After several adjustments, i found that the optimal one for me, is where the driver handle isn't seen and i only see my back passenger door handle instead😢

I'm going to have to experiment with the side view mirror. Maybe some cars are different? My side view mirrors view work better aligning as you say but with the rear door handle, not the front. If I do it with the front door handle the mirror gives a lower view. More of a view of the road.

❤ If you can see your car in the side mirrors, then they are NOT adjusted correctly. You need to eliminate blind spots completely! You do not need to see directly behind you from your side mirrors.

First adjust your seat (face front, face in shade if possible, relaxed for after meal tummy gauge cruise, ... ). Sit like a boss, angle body to other side enough-for elbow to rest on window-sill. Check buttocks for upright seating when need attention, check shoulder blades for no head-rest touching position. Check lean slightly forwards for squint-mode read road-signs on high-ways/express-ways. Nearest mirror need to turn head. Other mirror always in view to check for traffic-police. Turn head adjust nearest mirror. Sit many positions recheck. Rear view mirror for larger taller rounder curve (bus internal view rectangle mirror) 180 deg from back of driver rear windscreen to other side passenger window.

The door handle trick does not apply to my driver side. If the handle is in the bottom right, i cant see anything behind me on my drivers side as its pointed down to much. Works fine on the passenger side.
