Eric, you da man, very informative, I'm having starting problems as well but before I put the engine in mine almost 19 years ago I replaced the chain and gears but this video will make me check for slack in mine, thanks brother and God bless.

Thank you and your welcome. After I done all this work it did fine for a few weeks and it went back spitting and sputtering. I think the rings on this motor isnt holding compression like it should. So I'm debating to pull the engine rebuild the bottom and top end or say the heck with the bull and go build me a 383 stroker lol

Did you change the timing chain? Do you still have this slack after changing the timing chain? Are you sure that at 3:25 the distributor is on the position for cylinder 1?
@amberericjones5694

Al Pha yes distributor is facing #1 v6 on these are on the passenger side. V8 are driver side. I have not yet done the chain yet. Trying to get up extra money to get the puller and installer foe the harmonic balancer and a impact

But once the chain gears and the guide is replaced it won't have that slack.

Thanks. I am asking because some people write that slack in the timing chain is normal. On my Firebird with the 3.1 engine (RPO: LH0) cylinder 1 is on the 6 o'clock position and not 7 o'clock like in your case.
@amberericjones5694

Al Pha when there is slack between 4 and 8 degrees or 10 degree that is too much slack. Especially when you can hear the chain catch on the gear. Slack is not normal there should be resistance at all times.

Al Pha also when i rotated the engine exactly at tdc compression stroke. My old distributor lined up perfectly at 7 o'clock that was my drop in point for my new distributor. Before i done work The car ran because i drove it 2 hrs away. And it ran for and few weeks until one day i got in it and it started up then died. Then it would just crank.

I don't know why I'm not able to see the full comment something about fuel pressure is at 39psi. Have you checked fuel pressure regulator under the intake plenum.

Engine needs to be tdc compression stroke rotor on distributor should face cylinder one if not an not starting see if the rotor is facing toward the firewall. Pull distributor out rotate till the rotor is facing #1 drop it back in.

Then once you get the distributor correctly tighten down. Recheck timing if its at 10 btdc shut it off hook the wire back up an restart it. Its going to advance the timing which is normal
