Genki Shokudo, where locals always gather, serves Okinawan tempura and Okinawan soba noodles carefully prepared one by one by 91-year-old Genki's grandmother, Haru Miyagi.
The restaurant, originally a milk store built by her husband, is converted into a diner and is open every morning from 5:30 a.m. until the tempura is sold out in the evening.
After 11:00 a.m., the neighbors gather to drink tea, eat sweets, chat, and help Haru-san.
Haru-san does not refuse anyone who comes to his shop, and the atmosphere is relaxed and warm.
Some people come all the way from as far away as the mainland to visit Haru-san.
When I see Haru-san, I feel invigorated.
We caught up with Haru-san one day as she welcomed us with a friendly smile.
