This video deserves some kind of award. It has the most fact filled and clearly communicated overview of emergency comms I've ever seen. The graphics compact paragraphs of words into a simple and easy to understand topics. The inside view from the call centers and people that work in them is outstanding. Bravo hiking guy.

Simply stellar. The amount of work you do to prepare for this kind of video is amazing, and the result is so full of information to educate the general public about how to get out there and enjoy themselves, while having a rescue resource available to reach out to, if needed, in multiple ways condensed down to a few minutes in a video so everyone can understand it. Bravo and thank you! (while out of cell range, I use the inReach mini and/or Ham radio). Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL

Thanks, Cris. I went on a solo day hike a couple days ago into the edge of the Cloud Peak Wilderness. I was in just a couple miles on a usually well populated trail, but do to a road outage, the trail head wasn't available by car. I was permitted and took an alternate access to the trail, all legal, but the crowds were gone. I traveled with my GPSMAP 66i, but left my cell phone behind due to spotty service. After seeing today's video, that was a goof. I should have taken both. As a solo, older hiker (77), my choice to leave the cell phone behind was a dumb choice. Thanks again for a very well done video. Information I can use.

Excellent information! I just went to the Safety & emergency location on my android. I already had everything turned on, but I had no idea about how useful this feature is. Interestingly, I pushed the "Unknown tracker alerts" to find out more, and it said the last auto scan was May 19. Then I pushed the manual "scan now" feature and it detected an Apple Air Tag near me! It said to move around to try and locate it, but nothing showed up. I then scanned each room in my condo and nothing was detected until I scanned the room where it was first detected and it showed that an Apple Air Tag was nearby! I'm going to assume it belongs to a neighbor on the other side of the wall because wherever it is, it's not attached to anything that's moving with me. PS: A couple of weeks ago I did purchase the Garmin insurance to compliment my inReach Mini 2, but I assume if I elect to use 911 on my android and I need a SAR extraction, my Garmin insurance won't cover it since I didn't use my inReach to initiate an emergency response. Not sure about that.

That's interesting. The location scanner just came out recently, I haven't played around with it yet. And correct on the insurance. If you get it through Garmin, I believe you have to call SOS on the Garmin. At least do that first.

About three weeks ago we were on the trail to Insipiration point via Sam Merrill. One of our group stumbled off the trail and sustained multiple lacerations on steel rebar which was there supporting the path. The worst injury was on the inside of the thigh. Fortunately a nurse was among our group. She applied a tourniquet to the leg. We were able to use 911. The rescue helicopter was there within 15 minutes.

Great video. But you left out one important consideration when choosing between 911 and a satellite SOS. If you've purchased Garmin rescue insurance, the policy will only pay if you used a Garmin device to request rescue. Their FAQ states: "SAR insurance coverage requires the use of a Garmin Response™ supported device with an active subscription to report an emergency that warrants search and rescue to Garmin Response™." I suppose you could always send an SOS on your inReach first, and then make a 911 call.

Awesome Video. Just a month ago, I used my iPhone 14 to call for emergency services in Death Valley National Park, because a hiker in our group passed out. No cell service so it went to Emergency SOS. It took a little while for EMS to arrive, as you mentioned, and communication was spotty as we were in a canyon and had to keep moving around to get a good satellite signal, but all turned out well...much better than if I didn't have the Emergency SOS feature. PS: Thanks for all the great hiking guides especially here in the OC.

I could have used this 3 weeks ago LOL ... we just got back from Glacier National and emergency comms were one of my main concerns. As a licensed ham, I investigated ham radio, GMRS, Motorola, Garmin, PLBs, Zoleo, iPhone upgrade and more. Your earlier videos on these topics were quite helpful, by the way. Fortunately, everything worked out without needing to call for support. We had two guided excursions, and the Guides carried Garmins, by the way.

Another excellent video. Very close to retiring my InReach, but can't quite do it yet. Question: I always keep a piece of paper with my name "pack owner" and emergency contact in my backpack (in a ziploc). In your conversations with SAR etc, have they ever indicated that they search through backpacks for that information in the event the person being rescued is unconscious or otherwise unable to tell them that info? Wondered if a backpack ID tag would be a good idea.

That's a great idea. I'm not aware of a service that will monitor but I will do some digging. I've heard of that when people are on specific adventures, but not as a general service. And for general information, ideally leave: - A link to the hike I'm on - A link to my Garmin mapshare page - Time I'm back - Phone number to local responsible party for rescue (I do some digging) - My inReach address for messaging - Pass on that "I have the essentials and also a Recco on my pack"

PLBs work like the inReach example, except one-way. As long as both devices are in the same place, you can deploy them both. From what I understand the GPS location provided is much more helpful than the 121.5 homing beacon, and SAR usually deploy to the GPS coordinate rather than pull out a 121.5 receiver.

@@Hikingguy Hi thank you for your reply, I guess the difference between the US and New Zealand is that we have extremely dense Bush and despite having accurate GPS position, the difference can be days to find one with the honing in signal. I used to carry a Spot but the coverage of NZ by Spot at the time was extremely poor, so I upgraded to a inReach mini and a PLB now with the increase prices of inReach I have switched to a iPhone 15 and a PLB. Plus later this year the network provider I’m signed up to will have 100% coverage of NZ via SpaceX satellites so we can txt for help too. Keep up the great videos thank you .
