Any chance you could run a test comparing the 7950X and 5950X's performance and efficiency at different power targets? It'd be super interesting to reveal the efficiency gains that AMD is boasting about but not taking full advantage of in the stock configuration, and to see if an efficiency-centric build would even benefit from using a 7950X over a 5950X with appropriate power limits applied. i think gamers should wait for an X3D version of the 8 core, seeing how insanely good the 5800x3d still stacks up. quick aside in terms of efficiency: computerbase tested different power limits. the 7950x matches the 12900k in their multi core performance testing even with a powerlimit of 65 watts, in a test where the 12900k is pulling 241 watts, and it only drops around 5% of multi core performance at 140 watts. so the CPUs have the potential to be really damn efficient, it's just that their out of the box setting doesn't prioritize efficiency. if given the cooling headroom they just pull as much power as they can if they're not told otherwise. i think most users should just set a 140 watt limit like the 5950x was and forget about it.

Very interesting, the temperature behavior is surprisingly similar to laptops. Most thin laptops run at 80-95C constantly. The silicon can handle it and is designed in anticipation of that. I don't think you should look at max power draw, but at efficiency. Most of the time we don't run prime95, we idle most of the time or have very low loads. I also expect that manufacturers also will make it very easy to limit power more if you want so, even under load, and also then efficiency is the key factor. I have not checked all reviews, but read those numbers from AMD: According to AMD: "AMD says the 35% overall improvement at max power actually increases to a 74% improvement when limiting the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X to 65W" I think it's a good thing to limit the CPU power draw for energy price reasons, but if needed at some point you can run it hotter and faster. EDIT I saw the numbers of GN now, seems indeed not to shaby plan to stick with the 5950X Maybe wait until people undervolted it and look what those results give.

Really great review, and an interesting new architecture from AMD. It seems like this architecture/process node combo resulted in an unusually high frequency ceiling, but pushing those higher frequencies obviously comes at a power and efficiency cost. So basically they're able to push frequencies until a thermal limit, rather than the typical reaching instability before you hit a hard thermal limit (with good cooling). I'd be very skeptical over the "by design" 95C constant temperatures. Maybe you could find a way to get good answers/explanations from engineers in the industry? We've been led to believe in the past that 95C is close to 'danger' territory for your silicon. What's different that 95C is now an acceptable temperature for prolonger running? Have they just implemented smarter frequency throttling that prevents spikes in to the thermal-shutoff territory?

I really think what you should do to measure efficiency is set all the CPUs to the same power limit, like limit them all to 120W or 65W or something, and then see how much performance they get at those numbers. I'm strongly considering my next CPU upgrade to be like this, where I get a flagship AMD CPU, then lower the power limit to reduce the heat output while retaining most of the performance.

The thing with this 95C target is that you are always going to have your fans at full tilt because a) it's going to bug the shit out of you and b) you'll know you are sacrificing performance if you don't. In practice, I think people are going to set their performance to th level of their fan noise that they can tolerate.
@ericmollison2760
2 жыл бұрын
Yes he used the best possible cooler at full speed so it's not realistic. You might want to do that but it would be nice if he did a separate test for 50% fan speed or something. He seemed to forget that it would not only be slower but consume less power and probably be more efficient if he just cooled it less. He probably felt afraid the cpu would fry itself if he cooled it less. AMD said it's fine so believe them.
@Devrij
2 жыл бұрын
@@ericmollison2760 I don't think he was afraid he'd fry it. I think he was just having to choose the best cooler he had on hand to demonstrate that the chip will boost to 95C. This is not surprising to me, I had to under-volt my Ryzen 7 5800X out of the box as it was running idle at 85 decrees C and this appeared to be common and AMDs intended way for it to run So no reason to suspect that it will be any different for the new generation - they should probably be under-volted in the vast majority of use-cases

Idle at 85 degrees is not normal for a 5800x. that means something is seriously wrong. You can even see this CPU idling at 40 before ramping up under load.
@fLaMePr0oF
2 жыл бұрын
@@ffwast You're right, I meant to say under load, still the idle temps are somewhat better when under-volted to 1.3v (must affect the curve?) and it can still run all cores at 4500 under load at much lower temps Stock voltage raises TDP and temps but offers no additional speed or stability under a multi-core workload (just @ 4500 all cores at 10-15 degrees higher temps) I believe the binning on the 5800X is fairly narrow so this is quite common although I do seem to have an average part in terms of performance with many seeing 4600+ all cores stable Obviously having an all core overclock and undervolt like this means that I'm limiting single core performance; I believe the two best cores can reach about 4600 and 4700 respectively but most of my usage is multi-core so I generally just leave the all-core OC and under-volt

The efficiency comparison seems like it'd make more sense if the CPUs were configured to use their "respect the TDP" modes (so disabling PBO for AMD and TurboBoost Forever on Intel). A build targeting efficiency is going to care about that result far more than efficiency when the CPUs are configured to run as fast as absolutely possible
@bryankeltonadams
2 жыл бұрын
Sure, I think the efficiency claims made by AMD are on a clock for clock basis. Anyone who's overclocked a CPU knows that you can double or triple your wattage consumption and only gain 500 mhz of clock speed. If AMD is boosting based on thermal headroom, it's likely going quite far out of it's efficiency range the same way a manual overclock would.

All this tells me is that progress on silicon is effectively over with. Aside from some marginal improvements, we need to swap semiconductor material before we'll see things getting much faster. Only other option is to start making the parts bigger again and running water capillaries through them. I'm gonna keep sitting back on my pre-2020 parts until the parts market quits burning itself down.
