Perfect timing on this video Martin as I am using a lacquer finish on my current project. I'm on a very tight budget so I can't afford all of the fine products you use. I've found that I can polish the lacquer with fine grit automotive rubbing compound to bring out a near perfect finish. I add a coat or two of carnauba wax to protect the shine from fingerprints. I just wanted to let some of your viewers that one can get close to your spectacular results on a shoestring budget. Excellent video my man, can't wait to see you next.

That's a great finish Martin. I'm sure people really do not realise how much work it takes to get a great finish when you choose something like a lacquer compared to just throwing on a wax. I also like to do a Shellac finish at times too which takes even a lot more work to get that ideal finish. Great video in explaining all the process. Just a few Q's on this though. I always thought that a Danish Oil when properly dry would cure to something quite solid. So if your Oil was properly dry why was it that you had colours come away from the piece when the sanding sealer went on as those colours should have been sealed within the oil? Not so much a Q but something to think about. When mixing the aerosols it's actually better to shake them in a manner where you hold the top and swirl the bottom so that the bearings inside keep going round in a circular motion. Constantly doing this actually starts the liquid rotating and therefore mixing properly. Shaking a tin violently up and down or from side to side just throws the bearings about and barely moves the liquid inside, thus not actually mixing the contents. That's my physics lesson done for the year! 😀 More importantly though. Why was there only two beeps when you dropped the bowl? Are you mellowing with age? I'm sure many others would have had far more choice words after so many days work. Great video, really interesting watch.
@msabansmith

Hi Paul. Thanks for watching...and good questions too. I agree, people do not appreciate how long a quality finish can take, particularly with a lacquer or shellac. I have a great shellac mix up the workshop but rarely use it. I find it too sticky, yucky and time consuming for most projects (he said having spent days doing this piece!!!). Danish Oil does dry solid. It penetrates too, which is what I look for in my oils. To bring the oil to a surface finish will require more coats that I put on. The sealer contains a solvent which dissolves any excess colour applied, helps with the blending and of course, a few coats will seal the wood properly for the final finish. So long as the lacquer is shaken, spun or rattled for a couple of minutes before applying it, I would shake it like a cocktail mixer! I've used loads of these cans experimenting with it before it went to market, a good shake is sufficient for good application. There were many more expletives off camera as I was going through it again . . . mostly about how I could be so daft as to let it slip. I was also cursing the quality of the finish!
@PaulLockwood
5 жыл бұрын
@@msabansmith I did wonder about the finish. On the first attempt you could see the shaping of the reflected lights where it didn't look so smooth, but a good low grade sand or YG often resolves a lot of that. Shellac really is for those who want to spend time with it but when done properly produces one of the best finishes. Amazingly with this being around for hundreds of years I think people don't do it because of the work needed.

Hello just watched this video again , I love the finish. I have ordered the products identified in the kit. The order of applications after sanding is: coloring (Intrinsic),Danish oil, sanding sealer ( multiple coats), burnish with shaving and “final” finish (at least 10 coats HSH lacquer), Yorkshire Grit regular, lastly, YG microfiber. Did I get it correct? Your final piece is a work of art ( both times) well done!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

@msabansmith

Difficult to say, to be honest. There could be too much lacquer on the piece with each coat and too much humidity and chilly temperature for it to cure properly. Maybe the product was old. Or, (quite likely), the oil had not cured properly and was reacting to the lacquer.

Question: (sorry if already asked) Why not spray the lacquer while lathe is slowly spinning? I don’t know just wondering about your opinion. Thanks for the instruction!

Question about overspray - When spraying the inside with the multiple coats of lacquer, do you notice any overspray settling on the completed outside finish?
