This was the beginning of USA dominance in this sport. It was OK when the USSR won every Olympic but now that Team USA has done it consistently for 20 plus years, they keep changing the rules to try and level the field. Down from 7 girls to five, and now only four will get to compete in the next Olympics. It's a shame with so many Elite gymnasts in their prime that they are taking away the chance from more girls.
@Mia_M

I agree wholeheartedly. Gymnastics is a competitive sport. There should be no need to level the playing field. It should be about who is the best, not the best from each country. It's like in the all-around at the last Olympics where Gabby was 3rd, but couldn't compete because only the top two from each country are allowed.

Jesus. If they'd been smiling and happy, people would be criticizing them about that, "why aren't they concerned about Kerri?" They're world-class athlete competing at the Olympics and they've just won an historic gold medal--who cares if they're smiling convincingly enough? I really wish female athletes could just COMPETE without everyone criticizing them about whether or not they're smiling. Nobody cares when the men smile or not.

@moviemary She was #1 overall on the floor, #5 on the vault and in the middle on beam and uneven bars. I believe she would have won the Gold for floor and at least been on the medal stand of the vault and overall. The US Commentators constantly pumped up the Doms and Shannon, but if you watch the videos where other country commentators talk all they say is how Kerri was the most powerful member of the team.

@russianskatingfan Kerri's floor was 9.837, and that came after Shannon's 9.613, and scores build. Dawes had a 9.850 after Moceanu's 9.837. Like I said to moviemary, Strug was overall #1 on the floor and #5 in the vault at the end of the team comp. She had done better at the 96 games than ever before, and would have done extremely well in individual events if not for the injury. Kerri was known for falling apart when it counted, yet during the games she was rock solid.

Exactly. It's not being negative, it's a terrific story--she suffered a terrible fall during the trials and really, literally, almost didn't make it. If she hadn't sucked it up and gotten back on the beam (she clocked her eye badly and basically did the rest of her very difficult routine with one eye shut), she would not have made it through the trials. That's not negative, it's a great story. That one aim of commentating, to draw out the good stories (hence the fluff).

It also not true at all Kerri had a reputation for falling apart under pressue. Did you hear Bela Karolyis own quote that was always there for him as a consistent performer. Look at her performances at the 91 Worlds, 92 Olympics, 92 Worlds, 93 Worlds, 94 Team Worlds, 95 Worlds, and now here. Other than the fall (injured) on the first vault not one mistake. How silly to say she normally crumbles under pressure. She just was never one of the true elite due to her bad form and artistry.

The Soviet countries boycotted the 84' Olympics following the US boycott of the 1980' Olympics. Without the Russians there you can't say the competition was as difficult so, Mary Lou Retton's win has a bit of an asterisk attached.

@petis1976 The only reason she was #1 in qualifying for floor finals was Lilia went out of bounds in team finals on floor. Otherwise Lilia would have easily qualified ahead with higher compulsory and optional scores. Amanar got a 9.887 in team finals on floor but had a low compulsory score which wouldnt matter in floor finals. You are delusional to think Kerri could have ever beaten those two especialy in floor finals. Not in a million years.
@sichengshen4824

Godness, it doesn't seem to be any shame on Dominique Moceanu's face!If it was not her two falls how could Kerri injured so seriously. I have injured my ankle three times I can totally tell how painful it would be. She not only lost the chance to compete for the individual games but also almost destroy her gymnastic career.
@thespaceshuttlechallenger7882
9 жыл бұрын
+sicheng shen Dominique put up excellent scores for her team all throughout the compulsories and the finals. She's one of the main reasons the US was contending for Gold to begin with. Sometimes things fall apart, but she hardly let her team down just because she had one bad event. Besides that, where do you get off judging her entire response based on her face moments after it happens? Have you never heard of 'being in shock?' And why do you think it's her fault that Kerri injured herself? It's not as if Dominique ran up behind Kerri on vault and shoved her over.
@thomasdemay9805

you think she should have pouted and brought down her team's psyche and affected their performance worse or do you think she should have been ashamed for accomplishing her dream when she was given a gold medal something she had trained her whole life for. you dont have a clue

@petis1976 Gold on floor. You are delusional. Podkopayeva won floor with a 9.887, far higher than Strug could ever do. I dont think Strug was capable of any medal on floor. Dawes won only bronze and is better on floor than Kerri. The all around. Please, when has Kerri ever been close to an AA medal at a major meet. Her best chance to medal would have been vault maybe if she had two 10 vaults and stuck them both cold.
