The thing I remember about this race was that Buddy Lazier was driving while still recovering from a broken back. At the awards ceremony, his car owner just kept droning on and on during his acceptance speech talking about how they deserved to win, while Buddy was standing next to him in obviously excruciating pain waiting for his chance to speak so he could sit back down. I remember being pissed at how inconsiderate the team owner was being to Buddy.

Lazier became a very good oval racer, winning several more races in the IRL.

Always found Lazier's Reynard beautiful... that color purple, w/fluorescent highlights just a nice combo ... loved the drop wing Reynards anyway, just cool without any air box intake at the roll bar (turbo)... nice and sleek.

I remember my dad being pissed not that the big names weren't there but that Guerreros bad luck bit him again watching this race. Believe it or not we actually knew a good number of names in this race before IRL

There were certainly a few legit. drivers in those early IRL fields - with Buddy being one of them, IMO - but I'll be damned if this didn't (and still doesn't) feel like the "World Series" being played between a couple of Triple-A teams. It felt terribly wrong at the time, and a quarter-century on, it still doesn't feel much better.

The IRL was a joke until the big teams started to come back a few years later. Instead of having the best drivers in America racing in the most prestigious race, you ha d a great race with no name drivers and great drivers without a signature race, which killed both series and Indycar is still suffering because of it.

@@davidtx8777 Yes, the 500 still had packed grandstands due to tradition, but the other races in the series had terrible attendance. It marked the shift from Indy being the quintessential American race to Daytona.

The "best drivers"...spooged all over themselves before the green at MIS that day... The "500" IS the sport! CART and that limey bastard who was in charge...never understood that...and were destined to lose...and they did.

Interesting story on the second place: Davy Jones was usually only some field-filler racing all kind of cars without any major success… Just three weeks after almost winning here, he won the 24h hours of Le Mans - and then went back into oblivion.

Jones had a bad accident in testing I think later that year that cost him a chance at a factory Le Mans series drive. He would have had a pretty decent career if that had panned out
