Don't assume both companies do not already know about the flaws in their products. What I see on the table in this video are 2 products that are the result of decades of compromises and external factors (like having to use a standard, flawed, keyway because limited availability of key blanks in various markets, bizarre import, export restrictions, and large organizations, buying thousands of products, making requirements that degrade the performance of the product. Don't get me wrong, I am not making excuses for these two companies, just that manufacturing a product for national or global distribution involves so many compromises, I'm often surprised _anything_ ever makes it to a store shelf in the first place.

Since many lock manufacturers have started shielding their mechanisms and since a more specialized tool is required, it's really tough to say which is truly worse. Why, in the name of Alfred C. Hobbs, do we still have bypassable cores in 2019? How much extra would it cost to put a blasted guard plate at the back of the core? Or is it because the key is actually longer than the core, which is a design flaw that should never ever exist?
@tjmarx
4 жыл бұрын
It would cost around 10c per lock to put the guard plate in, which doesn't sound like much until you realise that adds at least $100,000 to the production cost for a minimum 1M unit production run required by home depot. The design for was Charlies fault but you know by the time they caught it, the blanks had already been made and the design team had run out of budget.
@OtakuUnitedStudio
4 жыл бұрын
@@tjmarx 10 cents seems a little high for a half-inch wide piece of plate steel, but yeah, costs add up. That said, you would think they'd know to budget for it. A lock that can be bypassed will cost them far more in loss of sales than the cost to make them correctly in the first place.

I think your observation is part of the reason that easily-pickable locks are still bought and sold nearly everyplace that sells locks. The other main reason is that physical attacks (bolt cutters, crowbars, angle grinders) are by far the primary way most locks are tackled -- especially on the street, where crooks are usually exposed & in a hurry. Indeed, it seems that in some ways locks are actually getting weaker, since most big retailers (Walgreens, Kroger, etc.) now sell store-brand knockoffs of Master Locks, the designs of which are so old their patents have long expired.

LPL what would your top five Peterson picks profiles and thickness be? I have a few .015 picks from them but looking to get some more and know you seem to like them and so have a good deal of experience in what works.

As my Uncle always said, a lock only keeps the good people from getting in.

I honestly don’t know what lock to get. This channel is amazing at telling me what not to get, but I never know what’s actually considered good within the lock world. Abus, maybe? But then again they’re pretty easy to pick too.

Funnily enough, ive seen those master locks over here in Australia for sale. Thanks for the lesson on being wary of the quality of items. Are there any other brands to avoid aside from master lock and brinks?

As someone who WORKS for Brinks as an Armored truck driver, this actually doesn't surprise me.

Since I started watching your channel I have come to the realization that I need better locks. So, what do you recommend for pad locks, both keyed and combination? I have two cargo trailers and my backyard gate that I lock with padlocks. Thanks.

LPJ what lock (in the $50 range) would you recommend for securing an indoors storage unit? I would appreciate your input! Thank you for all your videos, am not into picking but I have seen 100s of your videos and am working backwards until I reach that first upload. L:-)

hi, I was wondering if you could recomend a lock for a chain for exterior use. I've tried all of them at home depot and they always end up rusting and getting stuck

LPL is updating his checklist. 1) check if lock is by-passable....
