One of my new year's resolutions for 2021 is to finally get my lazy butt up and cut all those videos I took the last years, starting this one.
Unfortunately I didn't record the whole engine build back then, only the first start.
Video starts at ~02:10.
History:
In 2014 I bought a JDM 98 Subaru Legacy GT-B Limited with an engine failure as it already had a german registration and no modifications but all the options from factory that I was looking for.
The car was on its second engine already as on the first motor a valve ripped off. The previous owner had that fixed by the import shop under used car warranty, but when the second engine also started acting up, he was done with the car and offered it for sale.
In 2015 I finally started working on it, one cylinder didn't have compression. With the engine taken apart and seeing the damage I did a full rebuilt.
I had no experience on building engines before and less on Boxer engines and even less on Subaru engines.
Woprking on the engine I discovered that the shop did a really dodgy job replacing the engine.
They threw a first revision engine in and botched a lot of stuff to get it working in the Legacy as it originally came with a revision three engine, which also resulted in that engine dying soon, probably barely surviving the warranty time, but now resulting in a proper Bastard-engine with components from four different engine generations.
Other things like the broken MAF I only discovered after the engine ran again, so it wasn't the best first startup too. 🙈
With the knowledge I have today on building engines, I am surprised that it is still running fine (except for the normal headgasket issues on Subarus) and I am pretty sure that it's just a ticking time bomb that will need at least a revision soon. 🙈
For those interested to see more photos, here's the build thread I did back then:
