Cotton socks are the worst sock for your first layer. Polypropylene liner socks first and then at least 85% wool socks. I use Muck Artic Pro boots and have never had cold feet. If you want to use boot socks over that, fine but do not use cotton socks as your first layer. Cotton will soak up moisture from your feet and stay wet, making your feet cold. Polypropylene wicks moisture from your feet and into the next layer of socks leaving your feet dry and warm.

I do something much simpler and cheaper. I always use a foam cushion under my boots, separating the soles from the cold surface is a huge help. Then I slip a thinsulte stocking cap over each boot and put a charcoal type hand warmer inside on top of the boot toe area. Toasty feet for over 30 years

It doesn't get that cold here in Texas but it does get down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit sometimes. I use wool for almost everything if it's really cold. I don't hunt a stand, I still hunt, so my feet and ears must stay protected or I'll cut my hunting trip short. As I get older I can't take the cold.

As a kid when hunting Deer with my grandfather he would find a local stream or creek and he's sit down and remove his boots and socks. He would wash his feet in the cold water, sometimes it was crusty ice along the edges and he'd sit and wash his feet. Then dry them and put his socks and boots back on. He said his feet never got cold after doing that. He'd have me sit next him and wash my feet. It was wicked cold at first, but it worked.

That’s funny you should say that I wash my feet every morning too. I usually use a wet wipe but my wife looks at me like I’m weird. I like to get the “oils” off I think it keeps them warmer but maybe cold water does something too.

@Back In The Woods That cold water and freezing temp makes for an aching foot bath, but once you dry your feet, you start feeling warmer instantly. I can't explain it, but it always worked.

My dad bought a pair in the 80s when us kids couldn't sit on stand long enough. He said he was sold the FIRST day when he asked if I was "ready" and he was freezing to death with feet in "agony" and I was like "no I'm good"... said he bought 2 more pair that week.

Had the cold feet problem for years until I bought a pair of boot blankets. I have the older style they comes up to my knees. They work best if you put them on the moment you sit down. The best hunting equipment I ever bought is my Fat Boy Hunt Comfort cushion. You are insulated from the cold ground by the cushion. I never wear anything made of cotton. Polyester underwear (thermastat, thermax, and all) in layers. Heavy wool pants, discontinued worsterlon shirts, wool shirts and a wool vest can all be added or removed. I carry everything with a strap made from a seat belt sewn together. Everything can be attached to the strap buy short lengths of narrow length adjustable straps. Over one shoulder and behind you, it all carries easily. Walk with it off and add at destination.

The wet feet is not the problem. The problem is the wet insulation. Your feet will always sweat, ALWAYS, and they need, they want the humidity that they want. So, they will sweat until they get what they want. Your sock will absorb the humidity, they won’t get what they want. Your insulation will get wet, they are still sweating to get the humidity they want and at the end everything is wet… I used to do a lot of winter expeditions, skiing/camping trips with no heating sources except the wood fires, and I was always suffering from cold feet. One winter, in 1997, I went for a ski trip in the Canadian Rockies. There, I heard of a winter clothing clinic for expeditions. I registered and it was THE revelation of my life. VBL clothing. What are they, simple, Vapour Barrier Clothing. It was -20 and the teacher was only in a thick wool sweater. We where all dressed in layers, with all the most technical clothing available at the time. His secret was a full body suit made of kind of a latex. Ok, he was extreme, but it was working so good that his main problem was to NOT get to warm and get a heat stroke… It was to much for me, but the VBL SOCKS ARE THE SOLUTION. You use basically a waterproof sock directly on your foot, or over a thin Merino wool liner sock. I prefer with the Merino liner sock. Your feet sweat, they reach the humidity they want, and the humidity stop there, it dosent migrate to the thick wool sock and the boot insulation. So you stay warm. If you don’t believe me, try a plastic bag on one foot, then your usual insulation, and your usual layering on the other foot. Then you will thank me.

100 % agree on felt. Double socking.. 95%.. I found double can work if the base layer (just like the rest of body) is thin and tight, preferably wool, and the next layer is thicker but loose over the base layer. Even just a dry bag, old army canvas duffel or similar makes a huge difference over boots. Put a mylar windshield "sun protector" (dollar store) in the duffel or stuff sack, and you have a super budget version. I did that when living in a trailer with no heat and still have my toes.
The way to make 2 pairs of socks work is to purchase a pair of boots one size larger than normal, just for colder weather hunting; then loosen your laces when on stand to vent moisture out.

I've done something similar and it does work since my feet sweat so much. I also stopped drinking coffee in the early morning prior to going out in the woods since that makes my feet sweat more. I'd get my coffee fix when I'd get back for the day. BTW, did you ever get any deer from your blind that you and the bride carried into the woods? Full-watch.

great video...I got my boot blankets from LEM this past fall. They are very good product. I'm gunna try taking my hunting boots off when I get to my stand and use the felt pacs like you suggested. I've had the Thermo insoles but they never seem to last more than a couple seasons. Bunch of money for only two seasons. Now I have to come up with a way for warmer toes when on the trap line. btw...my boot blankets weigh 11/4 lb for the pair. they are size 2xl...not much for the hours of warm toes.

Right! Moisture is a killer in a boot. Whatever you can do to avoid moisture will be good. I don't go hunting. But staying in the garage on cold concrete standing for hours will make me have cold feet. So I make sure I have the driest pair of boots the next morning. I have a boot dryer for that purpose. It does the whole difference in my case. As for working a whole day in the snow, I have the Baffin boots. They are warm, but not great for walking long distances! Thanks!

Will have to try this. Just ordered my Ice Breakers. I seen the grouse there and it took me back to a hunt I had long ago where A grouse was walking all around my stand. I could hear him in the dry leaves and thought it was a deer I could not see.. Drove me nuts for about 30 minutes till I finally saw the Grouse.
