Great informative to the point video. It's amazing how far the .9mm has advanced over the years. .9mm has become my EDC for the last couple of years due to the compact handgun designs and the effectiveness of .9mm. 10 years ago I wouldn't have considered carrying a .9mm in a 3" barrel.

Just an FYI, Doubletap is made for Glock barrels so you'll get a slight drop in velocity with non Glock barrels. Just something to keep in mind, I have a lot of 10mm buddies and I tell them the same thing for Underwood vs Doubletap Gold Dots. If you have a Glock, shoot Doubletap. If you don't, shoot Underwood.

Thanks for posting this valuable information. I asked about the Underwood and double tap ammo in a comment on one of your other videos a couple weeks ago after watching the performance of the GD 115 and 124+p tests you performed. I alluded that the gold dots are usually very good across the board and wondered how they would perform if loaded to maximum specs. Looks like the results were very good! As I suspected, light and fast expands more, where heavy and slow tends to penetrate more (as a general rule of thumb). I don't think I would hesitate to buy and carry either one of these. I bet if Underwood has a 124gr version of these, it would be even better.

i don't understand how shooting at the gel w/out denim resulted in less penetration then shooting at the gel with denim. Using the same ammo.
@ShootingTheBull410

Denim impairs the bullet's ability to expand. The bigger it expands, the shallower the penetration; the expansion acts like a parachute through the gel.

Excellent video. I'd like to suggest another .380 test. Underwood is now loading Lehigh's extreme penetrator. That bullet is 90grains and moving at 1100fps. Pretty respectable for a .380. I'd like to see it out of the glock 42. This could be our winner. Make it happen :-)
@ShootingTheBull410

M85FSLUVR I think that may be moving in the wrong direction -- the XP already does well out of a short barrel but comes close to overpenetrating; adding velocity to it will just make it certain to overpenetrate more. It would do more damage, yes, but also have more recoil. Plus, the G42 is a bigger gun, so it's already going to be adding more velocity. The Lehigh loading was just about perfect, an average of 16"+ and mild recoil; adding a couple hundred fps may just result in a situation similar to when I tested the Buffalo Bore +P hardcast bullets...
@filoIII

M85FSLUVR You can get a 9mm in a smaller pistol than the 42. A MAN has no need for the 42, but they're great for women.

You're awesome, the best. I humbly request a few more rounds: "controlled fracturing" by LeHigh, loaded by Underwood, in +p. And "maximum expansion" by Lehigh, also loaded by Underwood, in +p. Both for 9 mm. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!
@ShootingTheBull410

TheSummerOfGeorge1 Controlled Fracturing would probably perform very similar to the RIP. Maximum Expansion is the next video that will be posted after the one I'm posting this week; it's the Lehigh version, I don't see an Underwood version on their site.

ShootingTheBull410 Awesome, thanks, looking forward to it. I would, however, slightly disagree about the RIP vs C.F., and the reason why, is the CF only has 3 pedals, whereas the RIP has 8 pedals. So that's kind of a huge difference. The best comparison I can think of, and pardon my analogy, but, it's like comparing spluttery diarrhea to actual chunks of solid log. At least, that'd be my expectation. Anyway, I really appreciate the reply and look forward to your next video. Maybe I could try to send you a few rounds of the CF sometime, but I'm a little wary of shipping ammo...

Instead of opting for a power down grad (from an already low powered defensive weapon = 9mm from short barrel is the bottom floor of acceptable) from Speer just use UW or DT but 124s not 115s. That should give you the bare gel penetration you want. I won't guarantee it because these manufacturers (Speer is the most guilty) screw around with the bullet instead of keeping a uniform design nose design and just add more to the back of the bullet to reach each mass category = 115 - 124 - 147. If they properly did this (like Hornady xtp) than shooters could opt from the mass that suits their weapon and needs. For example going lighter and faster from a short barrel to insure good expansion even with the lower velocity from a short barrel - or go heavier from a full length barrel to insure good penetration in bare gel even at long barrel velocity and contingent expansion. It is really annoying that Speer tweaks there bullets so much as to make predictions relative to mass changes near impossible. This is because Speer messes with each mass bullet until it performs uniformly or nearly so in gel regardless of weight - essentially providing only one pragmatic terminal ballistic option but achieved from 3 separate mass options.

If I may: What gun were you using for this? You have a Sig, right? See, DoubleTap ammo is meant for Glock barrels. It's a pretty open secret that if you use a Glock then you're going to get a slight increase in velocity from DoubleTap ammo. So if you've got something like a Glock 26 or Glock 43, the DoubleTap ammo might be better for you. Remember, the numbers in gel are only a piece of the puzzle! Different ammo will function differently in some guns, some shooters will handle it differently. All in all, a solid video though. There ought to be more amateur ballistics gel testing done. It should be normalized that someone shoots their carry ammo out of their own guns into ballistics gel.

You said the UW was hotter than the DT, but it was the other way around. Your average DT 10 shots was 1245 fps and the 9 shots with UW was 1206 fps.

great test! Will Hollow points work at a 10 degrees or more of a angle? I have a hard time getting them to expand if not shot perfectly straight on to the target. I hope they work, as these gel test are only testing the 'best case' for a hollow point, they will never work like this in real life, `cuz we will never stand square to a target(bad guy) unless it's paper or gel? Hmmmmm~ Angle test!? most hollow points will over penetrate if they don't expand... so I ordered a few boxes of Polycase to mix it up a bit!

I'm kind of a noob to the testing methods. Why do we went the minimum to be 12 in? and why does the rounds go further when they go through denim?
@xavierconley350
9 жыл бұрын
ss4goku34 The FBI figures that 12 inches in simulated tissue should be enough to penetrate a torso into the vitals from any reasonable angle that the bullet impacts. Especially if it has to go through an arm or rib before entering the vitals. In the denim test the fabric clogs the hollow point and slows down the expansion so the bullets end up losing energy slower.

@andrew42000

MrZebtoog True, for maximum blood loss, you'd want, in general, just enough energy to completely penetrate the target, with all excess energy going towards expansion. To cover a larger number of scenarios and body types, it's good to have a little extra penetrative capability in the tank, so to speak. Also, you can't get caught up in thinking that x" of gel penetration = x" of body penetration. The human body has skin (which is quite a bit more tough to penetrate than you'd intuitively think) and bones, muscles, and organs or varying toughness. Ballistics gel is simply a standardized medium to conduct standardized, repeatable tests with, and not necessarily a 100% accurate analog for the human body. The ballistic gel recipes more than anything else just provide a standard test medium to allow for better comparisons between different projectiles. A good bit of research went into determining how deeply a bullet should penetrate this standard medium in order for said bullet to be considered reliable and effective for self-defense.
