9th Street DIY is a skatepark in Canton Ohio. This video shows the building of the vert ramp with a bowl corner. How all this came to be is a documentary in itself! The skatepark as it sits today would not be possible without countless volunteers and donations. I found myself at 9th Street a few years ago When my oldest son got a skateboard for his birthday. We would go there to skate and there was a man there (Dale Brownfeild) that was always working building things. I went over to talk to him one day and asked him what was going on. He told me that he had been talking with the city parks department and him and a group of people had gotten permission to build some things to add to the old tennis court that now had some metal ramps. At the time there were two manual pads made from brick topped with granite. I told him that I was a bricklayer in my previous career and that if he ever wanted a hand I'd be glad to help out. A few weeks later he took me up on my offer to help. We built a much bigger manual pad that day and he realized I was serious about being able to lay some brick. That led to the vert ramp after a few other projects. Once the block was up and it was back filled and rebar was in place it sat for quite a while while we contemplated how we were going to pull off pouring it. While it sat Dale and a group of dedicated skaters took on more projects and gained a lot more experience pouring concrete. What these guys pulled off on a shoe string budget amazes me! I was going to try to name all the people involved in this project but there is just too many people. If you are watching this and helped say so in the comments. If you have never been to 9th Street it is worth a stop! There are even more elements that have been completed that aren't shown in this video.
