I bought a historic look Tayna battery a few years ago. It came on a pallet (perhaps overkill on the packing) in perfect condition and it’s never missed a beat since.

Assuming batteries were delivered charged, but lost their acid, you would need to add concentrated sulphuric acid, not water. Likely you can rescue if there is no physical damage by pouring out the contents if now diluted and starting again, but I believe there can be some heat release if plates dry out, so do this outside with rubber gloves and eye shield with fresh acid in one operation. Probably best to go and fetch batteries, but I have had success with some heavily protected battery deliveries for my home UPS project. I'll try and hunt out the supplier.

Thank you , great advice sir, please do let me know supplier, I'm not too worried how long they last, had full redund but yes changing the acid / starting over again is a good idea and would save wasting them, cheers

@fourwheelswobble. I'll do some digging. Noting it seems Health and Safety now apparently precludes shipping dry batteries and a container of acid. The Battery shop at Tyesley sadly seems to have gone (was the dregs of the Lucas battery factory shop). My late grandmother worked at Lucas at one time and they were recommended to drink lots of milk to ward off lead poisoning. And my other side grandfather said as kids they would make simulated lemonade using diluted battery acid. Times change, but your troublesome rubber case exposed link batteries at least look great. Maybe a prospect for installing a reliable tubular battery within a dummy traditional casing ? And you deserve a medal persevering with 6V electrics, although my Shetland mate's 6V Packard and Ford Pilot maybe take Ohm's Law to new limits.

Six volts batteries were always big trouble. They drew twice as much ampage current as would be used by 12 volts batteries, which means that they only last half as long as a 12V, the higher current used causes poorer starting and a tendency to not start well and to flatten the battery quickly.

Thank you, l have experienced all of the above, prob why many are converted to 12volt ? Thank you for watching sir.

Strange a battery is posted with acid in it, i've always had batteries bought online sent to me dry charged and comes with a sealed bottle of acid to put into battery and away you go.

Yes, my last battery came that way... seems like they caused their own problems here.. thank you for watching sir..

I fear your battery troubles are not over, Replacing so much original acid with distilled water will have changed the specific gravity of the electrolyte and its ability to hold a charge. This is not the same as a top up of distilled water to replace normal evaporation. Also, it appeared when looking into the half dry cells some plates/separators had been disturbed by rough handling. I agree with aprildangelo7457 about dry charged batteries and adding acid when you want to put them into service. Surprised the supplier did not label the package better stating which way up and not to tilt or drop. To effectively write off 4 batteries is no way to stay in business.

Totally agree sir , l received a full refund so I'll run these till they drop then buy a dry battery, cheers for watching...

That is very careless, I have bought several batteries on line and they have all been well-packed and sealed so that they don't leak - I did have one that did have a slight spillage, but because it was sealed inside the packaging it did not leak out, it did wet the battery and some fluid was lost, but nothing like what you have experienced. I would suggest that you obtain a supply of electrolyte and the battery that lost all its fluid, to fill this up with the correct level and charge this so you have a spare, or sell it on! I bought a 6v battery online for my 1930 Austin Swallow, the battery had a year's warranty and after about 6 months or so of little use, it would not hold a charge, it was brand-new. I was periodically charging it, one turn of the starter motor would flatten it! It seemed be be useless... Anyway, I decided to make a claim and the seller wanted to see that the battery had been tested - they suggested I take it Halfords as they had suitable test equipment. I did and Halfords were very obliging, they could not test the battery as there was insufficient charge to operate their equipment and they wrote me a note to that effect. I photographed this and sent it to the seller, which they accepted and they duly sent me a replacement and did not want the old battery back. Afterwards, other owners suggested that a battery conditioner was better for the batteries than a regular charger and rather than getting the cheapy from Lidls that everyone seemed to buy, I bought a CTEK, which is good quality and the best price was from Halfords (including free delivery). I used this on my new battery and tried it on the dead battery. To my surprise, it rejuvenated the dead battery and this was able to hold a charge and seemed to work fine. I felt a bit guilty as the battery was fine - I had not expected that so little use would be detrimental to the battery, I think modern batteries use such thin lead sheets in the cells that these sulphate up a bit too readily if not in regular use. I needed a 12v battery for my other car, and decided to buy another 6v battery and put two 6v batteries together (they fitted in the battery tray perfectly). That was about 3 years ago and they have worked perfectly well together. I now periodically charge all the car batteries with the battery conditioner and do not now use a regular charger, and they all seem to be fine - works for me!

I realize you seek originality but why not convert to 12 volt, not easy I know but all the bits needed are on the shelves and you would solve your problem for ever.
