Looking back at MK9, you can definitely see some kind of divide. At the end of Fatalites in MK9, focus is taken away from the victim and returns to the character who performed it. They strike a pose, do a flourish, maybe say a one liner, perform a salute to represent their faction. They had a chance to express themselves back then, inspite of the hyper violence.

I remember feeling sad at reading that. Hey, I love Mortal Kombat. But if someone is suffering to deliver me video games, maybe we should stop for a bit and examine ourselves. Yes, I know crunch time is another issue and I have the same feelings about that as well. Video games are entertainment. No one NEEDS to have video games. So maybe we should start asking for our devs to be treated better. No crunch time, no more games causing PTSD just to deliver entertainment. Yeah, games might cost more, we might get a few less games released a year as health is stressed over profits, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice. Because I don't just love video games, I love the developers behind them. When I watch GDC talks about game development, I can see the passion and heart they put into their art. And that passion shouldn't come at the cost of one's health. I'm not sure if the solution is to turn down the violence or maybe, since MK is all about goofy fun, just make the series an anime or something. But I find the Injustice series just as much fun as MK. The core mechanics are the same and I'm pretty sure no one's getting PTSD there (outside of Scarecrow's victims, at least).

Also, MK used to be praised for its deep and complex lore. Now, in addition to zig-zagging on whether the MKX comic series is canon or not (such as showing Goro's remains with four arms in the main story, but later including a scene in Aftermath where Kotal alludes to the time he ripped off Goro's arms), there's been so many plot twists that contradict, ignore, or rewrite the story that even the writers are unsure of what's going on. For instance, Ed Boon has stated in interviews that the mysterious woman in Jade's arcade ending in 'Mortal Kombat (2011)' was Kronika, while Shawn Kittlesen states in a tweet (which was later made private due to Shawn setting his account as 'protected') that the woman was Jade's mother (though he refuses to explain why he thinks so, encouraging fans to come up with their own conclusions, even if they contradict what he had in mind).

That was one of the kind of problems I did have with MK. While I wasn’t as interested before I do recognize that MK back in its glory days use to be the game to push boundaries. They were the ones that had the ESRB ratings established and even went to court over it. And it was just a game about Kung fu stereotypes, bikini clad girls, and ninjas with different colors being brutal. It didn’t care about social norms and it did what it want despite how people wanted to tear it down. But nowadays it’s almost been flanderized. That nothing is important about MK except the blood and gore. Hell the devs even decide to lecture people about what female characters should be dressed up like. And that fucked me up the most out of the entirety of MK’s controversy. That they are now apart of the norm. They think they are now what should and shouldn’t be in games despite how they fought this stigma long ago. And it’s not just that. Characters changed to be almost bland. Designs are starting to suffer. And like in this video, the personality of the game is almost completely snuffed out. Now all that remains is how gruesome they can take their gimmick. It’s like bogging down GG to being nothing but rock and metal references. Or street fighter being nothing but stereotypes on fighting styles. No substance. Just kind of dead.

The way I see it, MK should have chosen one of two paths: Take the Postal path, where the game never makes pretensions about being anything more than a fun, absurd exercise of hyper-violence and player freedom. Or; Take the Guilty Gear or Samurai Showdown path, where depth gradually overtakes "lol metal/hard rock references" or "lol ultraviolence." I think both routes are perfectly legitimate. It seems like guest characters (specifically guest characters that are paid dlc) seem to get the most love and attention when it comes to not trash animations. Case in point, Spawn. Spawn in MK11 has the flow and movement that you'd expect from a normal fighter. Sure not all his moves are great, but it's nice to see him rear back for a strong punch to make it feel good, or to twist his core to make a kick have more oomph. It also works towards his character to be mercilessly brutalizing these randos because hes always had a no-nonsense viciousness to him. Maybe it's because he comes from a background that already features impossible things, and that he is in fact an undead hellspawn, but it's food for thought.

Couple things 1 I dislike how every characters throw attempt is the same Guile Handcuffs animation. I know it's a small thing, but still. Considering sprite based fighters have had unique anims for decades, there's kinda no excuse 2 I hate how fatalities dominate the outside conversation too. Every time there's a new character, the same questions. Every time. "Man, what's their fatalities gonna be? Or brutalities? I bet it's -" never "Oh I wonder how they could utilise something about their character mid fight" only gore 3 The last bit genuinely got to me man. I felt that, hard. Sadly, I completely empathise with the mentality. It'd be dope af if MK had sick animation and characterisation, but honestly I just don't care anymore. There's always gonna be people defending its crap anyway. Best to just look somewhere else. Samsho being a dope example, very well picked 😂

The saddest thing about MK11 is that I can see so much potential that’s just never tapped into all for the sake of a quick buck. Like you said with the reflector pods, those could easily been put into Jacqui’s core moveset and made her a cool trap character. The fatal blows, despite having better choreographing than x-rays, being tied to damage feels more like a forced comeback mechanic everyone gets rather than a simple meter that was perfectly fine in MKX and the Injustice games. Why can’t these much better looking fatal blows be tied to a meter. The takeaway is that just about everything that MK11 does feels so forced, which is why despite having even worse animation I still prefer MKX because as terrible as the animation is in it, the core gameplay still feels better. Picking on Jacqui again cause that seems to be the theme, let’s take a look at acidic Alien from MKX. Imagine if the cool and very damaging poison traps that acidic alien does were scripted like Jacqui’s grab in MK11. You would feel less payoff. MK11 as a whole just feels cheap, and I know that’s a case of the time crunch, but at that point it just makes me feel bad for the developers who probably wanted to do more with this game but weren’t allowed to

the brutal, mindless violence of a game that is now focusing more on Story is laughable at best... most characters commit unbelievable acts of violence that would cripple most if not all, but they constantly get back up and take even more damage. a issue that gets worst when these characters are in Cutscenes before and after these fights.

After you mention the Liu Kang's fatality, I can't help but be reminded of Liu Kang's 2nd fatality in this game. It is the exact fatality like his 1st one, but now the uppercut explodes the opponent and he uses his nunchucks to further humiliate the opponent by crushing their body parts after the explosion. They literally used his "worst" fatality as a cheap nostalgia trick and made it all gore and bloody without understanding the real concept behind the fatality. It's always struck me how Liu Kang from MK1 to MK3 they never showed Liu Kang to be directly killing people. In MK1 they have him jumping and uppercutting his opponent to the air. In the 2nd game he had his 1st fatality plus the Klassic Dragon. In the 3rd game he either turns into a burst of fire or an arcade machine, crushing his enemy. Although his fatalities does technically KILL the opponent, we don't see Liu Kang physically doing so. No punches, no kicks, no fancy acrobatic moves. The devs really did care about maintaining a character's image while still making cool fatalities, and that is subttle storytelling right there - before all the fancy cut-scenes and so on exist. And I have to say I kinda like how MK9 treated Liu Kang in his fatality. One is the Dragon as we've known it, but the other fatality is simple: Liu Kang punching his opponent through the chest, and that's it - the same move that he used to kill Shao Kahn. Throughout the whole MK9 Tournament, Liu Kang didn't lay a hand and kill even one of his opponent, even Shang Tsung. But the act of Shao killing Kung Lao upsetted Liu Kang so much that in a burst of anger he broke his only vow of not killing a life - a moment of bursting emotions full of anger and sadness - which transferred quite well to a simple fatality, and one of course, appeared in the "Worst MK9 Fatalities" List by everyone. Seeing Liu Kang's fatalities in MKX and MK11 is frankly a big OOC moment. Liu Kang is and has always been one of my favourite MK characters. Of course he's simple, he doesn't carry a lot of depths or have extremely over-complicated motivations, but because he is just an effective and well-rounded character, who know of his power yet refuse to take lives away for his value of life. His style of martial arts and his personality reminds me of Bruce Lee so much, and that's all he needed. The way he was written and directed in the last 2 NetherRealm Games is truly awful. I'm so happy that at least one person in the world share my views of Liu Kang's later fatalities. If I would have made fatalities for Liu Kang. i'd have taken the MK1 - MK3 methods: not showing him actually taking lives. MK is truly just awful these days really. I've rewatched this video so many times just to be related to. And I respect your decision of quitting this franchise. It's all for the better really. Thanks for the video, you did an amazing job. I'll be continuing to support your future projects.

This may not be exactly the right MK video to say this on, but I gotta say this now. I don't understand the violence fetish. I honestly don't. Fatalities are (nearly) everything I can't stand about Mortal Kombat. They used to at least be funny enough to not be horrifying. Seeing Cyrax take flight by spinning his head around like a helicopter and chopping people into a million ribcages with his dreadlocks was funny once. They're not funny anymore. They have no value once the novelty wears off (i.e. after you see it the first time, if even that), and then do nothing other than waste time. They actually clash against the rest of the violence and confuse the logic of the fiction. Like, I'm a huge Skullgirls nerd, and a move like Ultimate Showstopper, where Cerebella impales her opponent on a gigantic sword, doesn't bother me because there's no game mechanic where she brutally executes her incapacitated opponent by stabbing them a bunch with exactly the same sword. Why would the sword chop people's limbs off NOW? Why can everybody survive shit that would kill a Terminator, right up until the round is over? X-Rays and Fatal Blows even show people getting back up from imploded craniums, impaled brains, and exploding cervical vertebrae, but these people AREN'T immortal? And the fact that literally everybody HAS TO be able to brutally execute literally any other opponent provides such a massive hurdle to the idea of the characters having different personalities or different philosophies about violence, in a game about fighting. It makes it hard to include characters the audience likes and relates to when you know the audience is going to have to watch them get sadistically tortured to death over and over again, and it's hard to have fun or amicable relationships between your characters when every single fight ends with a gore festival. I'm the kind of person to design fighting games in a notebook for fun, drawing up characters and moves and shit. I've only invoked the idea of a character killing their opponent precisely once. In one game, the character Violet is a playable boss character. She's a fire-spewing, furnace themed, mechanical undead type thing full of nothing but molten metal. She's a ruthless engine of mindless destruction, and sees other people as being worth nothing more than fuel to her fire, consuming everything in her path and reducing battlefields and defeated opponents to ash in her victory pose. Many other characters react differently when defeating Violet in particular: and their reaction informs their character. Many characters will re-kill her, but the intensity of their reaction says something about them; whether they react with fear, anger, or disgust means something, usually something about their relationship to her when she was human. The characters who decide to spare her out of pity, naivete, or cannot bring themselves to kill even an obvious and unrepentant monster also inform their character. She's like a kind of mirror, reflecting something in the rest of the characters. And you can't do weird, complex things like that when the goofball, wannabe luchador can end the round by using her wind powers to rip her sister's skin off and explode the flesh from her bones, when she was just using the exact same ability to do cartoonishly impossible wrestling moves ten seconds ago.How much of a sweetheart can she even be if she's dismembering her own friends and family as easily and readily as the cruel and sadistic Big Bad Guy all the decent people are trying to stop? What kind of contrast can you even create in a dark environment when every single goddamn character is soaked through their boots in blood? Fatalities remove SO MUCH design space, and add nothing of value. TL;DR -- I concur. End of novel length rant.

@@misterdewott8766 "How is it tasteless to add an edge of realism to your violence? These aren't real people being brutalized so don't get your panties in a bunch." True, they aren't real people, but what's the purpose of the characters being so violent in the first place, especially characters like Liu Kang? The violence is just unnecessarily gory and serves no purpose. It's "tasteless" in that it's basically saying "yes the opponent is suffering and in pain that's GOOD". There's no good reason for it to be like that. "Oh this guy's dead, might as well chop his femur into bits and rip his tongue out and strangle him while blowing up his vital organs because this is Mortal Kombat and we don't care about logic." The best fatalities are the ones that just kill them and that's it. That's why the older ones were so good, they were only as violent as they needed to be. And like I said before, THE WAY THE GAME IS SET UP MAKES IT SO YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM TO PROGRESS THROUGH THE KRYPT. It just shoves these shitty fatalities down your throat and is just bad game design overall. Gore is the reason everything else is rushed and bad. They focus too much on it because that's the only reason people buy these games, which is a big problem considering that shouldn't be the only selling point. Also, if you want to get technical, you CAN brutalize a real person, since Dimitri Vegas is a skin for Sub-Zero. "While it is bad that the Netherrealm employees have have PTSD from seeing the real gore, it honestly comes with the line of work. You signed up to work on the most violent game franchise off all time, and you have to see actual gore? That's a shocker." Normal game developers don't look at videos of real people getting killed, they just study human anatomy and base their gore off of that. No one should be forced to see actual people being killed just so it can be used as a basis for "entertainment". They didn't have a choice to see it, they were surrounded by this shit everyday whether they wanted to see it or not, not to mention the crunch time involved. That is fucked up. "The reason why nobody is making a point for all of this is because this isn't a problem." Giving employees PTSD isn't a problem? Alright, sure. "I have not seen a single person actually complain the violence is "too real" Not even bigger guys like MaximilianDood or 4thSnake!" Maybe they don't complain about it because they choose to ignore it on purpose? Like what MK fanboys do? I'll give credit to Max since he's a genuinely good person, plus he likely hasn't seen it since MK isn't a big focus of his channel? His main thing involves Street Fighter and fighting games like that. The rest of the fanbase though? They're a bunch of 12 year olds and manchildren who constantly complain about the game when they don't like it, yet defend it when it's being criticized outside of the fandom for stuff that's not content related. Those people ONLY care about the gore and as seen with MK vs DC, thy dislike it if it doesn't have their precious dismemberment. MK and Injustice are the only fighting games they've ever played. I assume that's the same for you. "So don't pretend like Sugarpunch is some kind of holy crusader that's here to expose MK for being a tasteless, realistic murder simulation." Did I say they were? No. Unlike the MK fanbase however, they've got common sense and actually play other fighting games. It's sad that people will defend a game where you violently kill for absolutely no reason whatsoever, yet they'll flip their shit over a character showing a bit of leg. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

If you actually watched a single introductory video on the basics of animation you would quickly realize how wrong every single one of his criticisms are. It's why Mortal Kombat has managed to succeed beyond Tekken, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, and BlazBlue, both critically, commercially, and fan-wise. These pointless videos he's made have done nothing to dissuade people from liking Mortal Kombat and highlights his own incompetence in animation.

The sad part is that Mortal Kombat is trapped within its own gimmick. If they ever try and water down, or walk back any of the violence, the fans will instantly arc up, and accuse them of self censorship(which they're already getting slammed on with female character designs). It really is a shame, because Mortal Kombat has the universe and lore to be so much more than its gimmick.

For as well meaning, put together, and depressing as this video is, I do have to correct one thing: The actual difference between Scorpion and Subzero comes from purpose. Something that always bothered me with the newer games is Quan Chi. His entire character serves to retcon the original plot between the two by giving some unnecessary "Oh, an evil guy manipulated you" sideplot to Scorpion's backstory. For the unaware, originally, Scorpion's clan straight up WAS killed by the Lin Kuei and the original Subzero WAS at fault. Scorpion achieved his revenge by killing him, but then heard of his rivals younger brother taking up the mantel of Subzero. Scorpion set out to kill him as well, only to find that his hatred was misguided as unlike his brother, this Subzero had heart and good intent behind what he did. Feeling a sense of obligation and guilt, Scorpion watches and protects the new Subzero like his new older brother, trying to keep him and the principles alive that had died with Hanzo and Bi-Han. In the original setup, Bi-Han started the chain of events, Scorpion was the main narrative device, and Kuai Liang is the one to break the cycle. Scorpion found redemption not in revenge but by protecting the brother of his greatest enemy, and Kuai Liang found redemption in reforming the Lin Kuei. The problem: This plot got entirely replaced for a samey buddy-buddy ninja plot where both characters serve the same goals, cause, and principles with no nuance or extra layers. Quan Chi is and always had been a problem character for that reason.
@cui8789

Not entirely. While it is true it was Quan Chi who killed the Shirai Ryu, he only did it at the behest of the Lin Kuei. As Sub-Zero said in MKX, neither of them is blameless.

Actually, Quan Chi destroyed Shirai Ryu as payment for Lin Kuei's(Sub-Zero's) service. Bi-Han is only guilty of killing Scorpion, that's all. In MK2, Hanzo just heard rumors about the return of Sub-Zero so he decided to investigate if he came back just like himself.

And you can tell Netherrealm WANTED to do something similar with the Kombat Kids, especially Cassie and Jaqui, but things like the absolute necessity for ultraviolence completely overriding any other established character traits means that they, or any other MK character, will never be fundamentally different than any other in terms of personality. Wow... The ending was like a punch of reality right in the stomach to me. I was born in the early 200s. So, most of my experience has been with the triology and the first mk movie that came out... But, as weird as it sounds, I mainly came for the game because of the main plot and characters. And I always felt like the series was a over the top martial arts tournament, that didn't took itself seriously and had more of a vibe from the old Kung Fu movies that became popular because of Bruce Lee. And, honestly although fatalities are part of what made Mortal Kombat stick out. But the game shouldn't be just that. I know that hopes got really lost In the game to improve. But I did start to see changes, the game at least to me gave again that vibe of a over the top martial arts tournament in the main story and also with the classic characters, such as the friendly rivalry between Kung Lao and Liu Kang, the over the top personality of Johnny Cage and etc. That gave me a vibe equal to the first Mortal Kombat movie. Netherealm just left the series wide open to changes in it's end. Maybe if we're vocal about it. There's hope of making the series good again, to develop characters, emphasize in the coreography and animation of kombatabts , and turn the fatalities to their original form. A goofy and sometimes just exaggerated way to defeat an opponent. Not a over glorified bloodfest, to the point of hurting the mental health of their development staff. People have complained a lot of the animations and writing, especially In mk x. And even without being spectacular, there has been changes to the plot and animations, turning the 14 edgy boy's fanfiction that was mk x I to so etching that was a bit more In the spirit of the first Mortal Kombats. If we're vocal about it, there's a chance they'll listen to us. But... I do understand if you're no longer interested in the franchise, because netherealm did fuck up 3, times In a row. The last point actually reminded me of something about Mortal Kombat. **I was exposed to Kenshi first through his fatalities in MK10 and thought he was a villain due to how brutal and tortuous his fatalities ares.** And that's a shame: there is lore in MK, and some personnality for most of the cast. Netherrealms HAVE the opportunity to make genuine meaningful (lore wise) and simple fatalities, but they just chose not to because they WANT to show the gore, the blown spleens, and the popping eyes. Nothing in Shao Khan and Kotal Khan's fatalities convey "ruler" to me. Kung Lao, the mister Ego of the franchise, doesn't show off in his fatalities. D'Vora, miss "I'll backstab everyone for the hive" doesn't throw her victim as food in said hive (doubly sad as a parody a-la-georgie death in IT is obvious). The only ones even close (beside Johnny and Cass) are Baraka's eat you after winning (confirmed) and Erron Black's acid puddle (As he is confirmed to fight like a scumbag.). I liked MK for it’s lore and atmosphere, the oriental-gothic, mythological martial arts feel it use to have and the mystery and colour of the stages; the folklore of them and the realms. The awesome synth music of Dan Forden that added to the tense and dark atmosphere of it all. The gore and fatalities, at least in the old games, use to be just the cherry on top. They were honestly the least appealing aspect of the franchise to me, and I know I’m not the only fan who thinks this way.

I agree with you, MK felt in its various titles a chance to utilize literature and cinema to create an interactive experience, each character is unique, comes from a different world, coupled with an interesting atmosphere, design and music. The fatalities do not feel like a necessity, taking them away will not take away from the franchise's interesting setting and cast.

Sadly Mortal Kombat will never be the same. What we loved about it is gone at this point. And I'm an optimist.

Japanese Fighting game characters are 2 or 3 combined gimmick and thats it.It just stays that arcatype till end of the world or something. MK character are one giant gimmick evolved as time goes on.

One thing that actually kept me away from the franchise for a long time was the violence. Things just changed when i got to play mk5 with my cousin and i the game began with that cinematic about sheng tsung and kuan chi joining forces to defeat liu kang and shao khan to resurect an ancient god of another realm... The lore and aesthetic was so cool i couldn't help not becoming a fan.

During the afterword, all I could think of is how in MK11 Cage can tear his daughter in half and use her torso in a standup routine, while in SamSho Darli's win quote against Shizumaru (who she doesn't know) is her actively comforting this child who may or may not have just been torn in half by her Like, I felt bad watching that happen and the game went ''well how do you think she feels about this? She's not gonna be Okay for a while''

Today, I understand why MK despite the "Mature" rating on its cover, is the most childish fighting game series... _Welp, back to smash! gotta learn those Terry combos!_

Now I finally understand why I had such a good time playing MK in the past. Because I didn't take it seriously. I just laughed at what was happening because of how over the top it was.

MK has become the Family Guy of Fighting Games. Out of one dark age into a new, even worse one, with extreme vulgarity.

Never really thought about that. Really if it wasn’t for the gore and fatalities, it wouldn’t be mature rated now would it?

@@jacobfoxfires9647 Nailed it, Jacob. It wears a child's idea of maturity made of flesh, blood and bones. But as stated in the video, it's just immature shlock that appears to be gross for the sake of gross. At the expense of everything else.

Wasn't there a video by Egoraptor where he commented on how video games these days are all mature rated with the violence (and the boop bop bippity bop), but the game still treats their player like they're kids?

Mortal Kombat is becoming Gore Porn more and more with each game, and it's sad. I miss when the violence was more silly and over the top, nowadays they try to be as gross as can be.

It is over the top. But i do wish we had more fatals like scorpion's spear fatality. The second one not the first one. I agree with u about the gore being just meaningless at this point, but i dont want them to get rid of fatals all together. Just make them cleaner

@@jaysaute8328 tbh imo mk9 had the best fatalities, mkx and mk11 (while I dont mind the gore) using eyeballs/intestine ripping for 50 % fatalities is just lame and uncreatibe
