Fun facts about this movie: -The director, Joel Schumacher, made an apology for making the movie on the DVD commentary. "It was like I murdered a baby" -George Clooney apologized for playing Batman multiple times since the movie was released, and once said "I think we might've killed the franchise" -This movie was nominated for almost every Razzie award that year (award for terrible movies), and even won a Razzie for "Worst Supporting Actress", which was Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl. -Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, called this movie "so bad that it demanded a new way of doing things", and he was right because after this movie, the "Holy Trinity" of comic book movies were released: Blade, X-Men, and Spiderman. The age of Superman and Batman were over, and Marvel basically took over ever since.

@@thehonestreviewer7754 You say that like it was on a consistent basis. They had that and didn't have shit until damn near a decade later and even then, the only real prosperous and critically acclaimed ones were Wonder Woman and Aquaman. So that's Superman Returns (Personally, I love that movie.) Batman Forever Batman and Robin Man of Steel Batman vs Superman Justice League All were critical failures in some way. They literally only had the Christopher Nolan movies to rely on Let's look at marvel movies that were critically acclaimed Blade 1 and 2 Spider-Man 1 and 2 X-Men 1 and 2 Iron Man 1 and 2 Incredible Hulk Thor 1, 3 and 4 X-Men prequels 1 and 2 Captain America 1, 2 and 3 MCU Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3 Avengers 1, 2, 3 and 4 Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 Deadpool 1 and 2 Ant-Man 1 and 2 Black Panther 1 and 2 Black Widow Captain Marvel Doctor Strange 1 and 2 Logan So yeah, Marvel took over. 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

Fine, I'll give validation to this comment. Dark Knight Rises, BVS, Joker, and The Batman were all consistent at passing the top ten at the Box Office proving the cape crusader still has staying power in theaters. In fact, The Batman overcame Thor 4 at the Box Office despite the latter coming out during the summer movie season. Pair that with how much influence Batman films have had over comic-book movies in general, and I'd say the age of Batman is not even close to being over.

Yes the one Batman movie so bad that even the people involved, including director the late Joel Schumacher, admitted it was bad. Side note, I always feel bad for Schumacher regarding this film. He's made good movies, and from what I heard was a nice guy, but this production did him no favors. WB made him spearhead this movie immediately after the commercial success previous movie, Batman Forever, and told him to fast-track production so it would release a mere two years later. This means he had to get the movie written, casted, re-casted because the previous Batman Val Kilmer left and was also difficult on set, filmed, and edited all within one year. If that wasn't bad enough, toy companies were also involved with the production design in order to make it more 'toyetic' and therefore marketable for toy commercials. With all these factors, can we really be surprised that it's as bad as it is? Hell, I'm surprised the movie was even finished. Lastly as to answer your question about live-action Batman actors in movies we have... -Adam West: Batman the movie (1966) -Michael Keaton: Batman (1989) and Batman Return (1992) -Val Kilmer: Batman Forever (1995) -George Clooney: Batman & Robin (1997) -Christian Bale: Batman Begins (2005) The Dark Knight (2008) The Dark Knight Rises (2012) -Ben Affleck: Batman v Superman (2016) Suicide Squad (2016) both Justice League (2017) and JL Snyder Cut (2021) and Robert Pattinson: The Batman (2022)

No, they didn't get a sequel from this, even if they wanted to set it up for one. While it did technically make money, it fell short of double the budget, which a film needs to be considered successful. The three films before it made over triple. It pretty much killed the Burton/Schumacher series and we didn't get another live action Batman film until the Nolan trilogy eight years later, which wasn't as big of a gap as I thought. For the most part Adam West was the only one to portray Batman in a live action TV series. That said other actors played in here and there in other DC live action shows, such as bits and pieces in the Batwoman TV series, but we didn't get a good look at him until Batwoman when to an alternate universe to find a version of him played by the late great Kevin Conroy. It looks like he appeared in Titans, but I never saw that. Generally speaking live action TV shows avoid showing Batman. In Smallville they gave jobs normally done by Batman to Green Arrow, another wealthy vigilante with a host of gadgets. Kevin Conroy is the actor who died recently. He has played Batman more times than any other actor, albeit in animation and video games until the Batwoman episode I mentioned above. I will miss him.

On both the show and in real life, people trigger Nostalgia Critic by either saying Bat Credit Card or by giving him an actual Bat Credit Card. On the show he'd scream "A BAT CREDIT CARD?!?! Honestly that was quite the overreaction to the bat credit card. It does seem like something he would logically have in case he needed money in the field. I'm he did some leg work to prevent it from being traced to him. I'm reminded of the time he bought coffee in the Justice League cartoon, though he paid cash for that. I can't think of a reason for the bat nipples though. There was a lot of stuff to question about this film, but I don't think the card was one of them.

Batman and Robin is the end result of overcorrection. After the 1989 Batman movie proved you could make a successful superhero movie that can appeal to older audiences, WB gave free reign to its director, Tim Burton to make a sequel. The end result, Batman Returns, was dark, gritty and esoteric to the point where parents didn't want to take their kids to see it even though WB was marketing it to all ages. So, they fired Burton, hired Joel Schumacher and had him direct Batman Forever. It was more kid-friendly and marketable, but it still had a little bit of edge and it was hugely successful, so they decided that Batman and Robin should be even more kid-friendly and marketable and sand off all the edge.

10:47 Consider the process, traceability, and stupidity of Batman carrying around a credit card. 1. Who's name is on the card? 2. Is this money coming out of Bruce's bank account? 3. Is Bruce leaching this money from his company? 4. Does Batman have a bank account? 5. Is Bruce transferring money to this superhero's bank account? 6. is this money traceable? 7. Can this card even legally be used if it has Batman's name on it? 8. Does the IRS know about this? The whole concept is just dumb. Batman in the animated series was fighting a guy who could enter his mind when he is asleep, so he drove up to a Starbucks at 3am to get a coffee since he had been awake for days while looking for this guy. He did not pay with a BAT CREDIT CARD, he paid with CASH. Sanitized, fingerprint scrubbed, not from his account bills. Not even 10s or 20s. Just 1s. That is how you keep a secret identity!

Hmm, since we tend to BS a bit, figured I'd share this fun fact with you Duck... When this movie was in theaters, they had a tie-in promotion with Amoco gas stations and Maglite where so many fill-ups of premium fuel would let you redeem a coupon for a Batman Maglite set. After the promotion, the signs they had up for it were typically dumpstered, as they had been sitting outside atop the pumps for weeks. Well, where I lived, we were having mild weather and the signs were in pretty good condition still - we were at the station when they were taking them down and 12-year old me asked if I could keep them. Still have them, they're rare as hell, it's justa shame the movie sucked! Oh, and to answer your question about how long Batman has been around - 1939, Detective Comics #27. This was my first experience with Batman... shameful, I know. But, looking back on it, the best part about this movie... surprisingly, Arnold as Mr. Freeze, when he's not making ice puns or ordering his goons to perform for him, he's actually a good and accurate portrayal of Victor Fries, especially because he's playing a role where he's NOT an extremely overpowered badass, which is unusual, for him at least. Also, they explain in the movie that Macgregor's Syndrome (the disease that Nora Fries and Alfred are suffering from) has 4 stages, and that Freeze managed to find a cure for it at Stage 1, Alfred is in stage 1, Nora isn't, that's why the cure works on Alfred, but wouldn't for Freeze's wife.

"Her hair's not up, that would make everything impossible" Which actually leads to one of the better jokes in the Harley Quinn Birds of Prey movie. They're fighting off some guys and one of them has to hand another a hair tie to get her hair out of her face to actually fight. EDIT: Also, it might please you to learn it actually didn't make money. $238M on a $125M budget isn't actually making money, since they have to pay back the theater take, marketing costs, tie-ins, and on top of that, royalties to producers from earlier entries. Typically speaking, a movie has to make at least 2.5x its production budget back to actually make money. Meaning this movie had a break even point of at least $312.5M. But oh wait, actually it very likely needed 3x its budget to make money, because this film's marketing campaign was HUGE. So really, it's break even point was likely $375M. Which would mean, this movie actually LOST the studio about $137M. It LOST them more than the production budget actually was. They would've been more successful had they not even released the film at all and just tossed those $125M down the drain.

6:40 - I think I have not watched this Movie in 20 Years (God Im old !) But I always Love it when Directors do there own Thing and tell there own Story - Like George Lucas with Star Wars or Joel Schumacher with his Batman-Movies. I just hate it when Directors do REALLY Stupid Things

The Bat-Credit Card gets brought up several times, especially during crossovers with Linkara, a comic reviewer. The last time it gets brought up, Linkara explains exactly how much sense a Bat-Credit Card actually makes (hint, it makes more sense than it should)

I mean I’m sure Bruce Wayne would have every invitation only credit card on the planet but to hide his identity it makes sense. Does that mean Batman has a credit score and his own ssn or ein?

Which is still dumb...like does the bank transfer money from Bruce Waynes account to a secret "Bat account" - all the Batman villians and their money, tech and henchmen would find out Batmans identity in a week. They would *literally* have the receipts. haha

XD I saw this movie a LONG time ago. I will not again. I was fine, but my dad was sighing the whole time. I know as the undying nerd I am now, I’ll probably feel EXACTLY like Nostalgia Critic does. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take notes on each character arc and tell you how well every cliche and one liner fit well together. (You couldn’t pay me, and not even with a bat credit card to do it.)

It's not THAT painful... but... I'd be lying by saying "this didn't killed the Batman Burton/Schumacher-verse". It's a pity, the fifth one had potential. I'd wish some horrible movie would get a revival sequel just to see stuff like Batman Unchained or the Super Mario Bros. 2 live action movie.

20:37, My good man, you'll be relieved to know that "Batman & Robin" did indeed lose money for the studio and Doug's statement about the film being a big Bat-Bomb was entirely correct. A $238 million box office gross against a $125 million production budget might seem okay at first glance, but we need to understand these numbers a bit better: First, roughly half of that cash earned does not go to the studio. It goes to the movie theaters that are commissioned to house the movie on the studio's behalf. Movie theaters need to make a profit too. Already, that leaves the gross money for "Batman & Robin" down to $114 million, which already means it failed to recuperate its production costs. This is why it is generally accepted that a movie needs to make back at least twice its budget in order to break even for the studio. But then there's the second thing to remember: the production budget numbers do not include the amount of money the studio paid to market and advertise the movie. The marketing budgets for most movies are not that well-documented, but we DO know the one for "Batman & Robin." Warner Bros. spent $125 million more to advertise that movie, as it was intended as a mass summer blockbuster. So, in the most conservative estimate for how bad this movie failed, we are looking at a net loss of at least $136 million for Warner Bros. Pictures. A Bat-Bomb indeed!
