Professors of all subjects have historically depended upon pens and ink to communicate their wisdom to others and to commemorate their individual contributions to the world. Surrendering one's pen is a symbol that the giver believes his own wisdom and contributions pale in comparison to the person receiving the pen. It is a symbolic homage, like laying down their swords before their intellectual superior.

Well, interestingly enough it seems this was a made up tradition for the benefit of the movie & actually doesn't exist! www.quora.com/What-is-the-history-behind-professors-giving-colleagues-pens-for-notable-lifetime-achievements-as-portrayed-in-A-Beautiful-Mind

considering that these two died together on a car accident really shows what a great and deep love was binding their souls. they should have waited some years before making the movie to see the end....i got really touched when i read on the news that not even death managed to separate them...

the most heartbreaking thing i learn from this movie is at 1:10 he didn't want to be surrounded by people from the university in case if one of his attacks appears. All these years ignoring the fact that everyone loved him regardless of his mental problems.

This is probably Rusty's (Russel Crow's) best performance. There is some beauty in this challenging performance. We are blessed when actors perform at their best. No award need be sought. Professor John Nash is more important than this movie. I hope your children learn the majestic factors that he brought to humanity.

I love this movie and love Russelle Crowe for portraying John Nash. I know the real John Nash worked along side the movie makers to make sure they did. Was curious about there ages I know John was in his 90s. Then I learned how John and Alisha passed away. Was gutted they were travelling at a high speed in a car and neither were wearing seatbelts, both were flown through the windscreen and of course died instantly. Somebody so smart and a genius to not wear a seatbelt is so stupid!! RIP John and Alisha!!
