We braved the freezing cold weather for a spectacular sunrise on the summit of Mt Maroon one of if not my favourite places to go. You definitely earn the view on this one and this time I got the perfect sunrise I was looking for but it's pretty bloody close.
We started off at 4:15am and a crispy 3°c and soon stripped of some clothing layers on the journey up due to the effort required. Even in the cold, you still get hot and sweaty very quickly as you go up the steep incline.
There's something about doing this climb in the dark that makes it more fun. The fact you can't see anything but what's in the light of your head torch means you just get on with it and don't get side tracked by the views as you go up.
I wanted to show just how different the climb is in the dark seeing as most people will never do a sunrise on the summit and what it's like climbing up through my favourite part of the mountain The Chute. The darkness adds that extra level of concentration needed because you can't see anything and you don't know just how much further you have to go in each section unless you are very familiar with it.
Once through the Chute it's easy the rest of the way to the summit. We started to see the beginning of the blue hour while climbing the Chute and it was in full swing by the time we hit the saddle. The clouds were also in full swing and at times we faced a whiteout and the thought of going all that way for another whiteout was disappointing.
But luckily, the clouds parted long enough at times to reveal a spectacular layer of fog and low cloud blanketing the valley around the mountain and stunning chilly sunrise. The wind didn't help adding a freezing wind chill when it really picked up but it also helped blow the clouds over the mountain quickly.
