Good video. Helped me decide on the diagonal I need. Thank you.

How do I now if i need the 1.25 or 2” diagonal? I just got an orion telescope but it needs the eye piece diagonal

Timely. Thank you. I have heard others say, but they never explained. Now I understand.

Thank you for that. I just bought a Meade LX200 8" EMC. Its in amazing condition and I only paid $650 for the whole thing (scope, tripod, case...). However it did not come with a an eyepiece holder or diagonal. I wasn't sure what to get so I ordered a (William Optics Dura Bright 2" Dielectric Diagonal - Carbon Fiber) for $150. I have not received it yet. I hope I made the right decision.

I have that exact same diagonal for my 11" sct. Wonderful diagonal!

Great review! Dielectric for me. The way the light hits that sky watcher behind you makes it look like theres a dent in the side.

Excellent review Allan! Just one point I disagree: Celestron has an excellent prismatic diagonal, the classic CELESTRON STAR DIAGONAL 1 1/4" MODEL #94115-A. By far one of the best prisms in the market for its price. Barrels are metal built, so no problem here, but the box... oh boy, they used PLASTIC! And this is really sad because when you put heavy eyepieces and a camera (focal astrophotography), THE PLASTIC BOX HOLDING THE EYEPIECE BARREL SIMPLY CRACKS. This is a shame considering the excellent quality of the prism glass and coatings! Wish Celestron build this beautiful 90º star diagonal with a full metal box! Amazingly, the lower plate (cover) is a metal one! 🤷♂🤷♂ 45º prisms are erector types, known as Amici prisms. They have multiple reflections in order to give an erect image. The problem with the Amici prism comes with bright point objects, the central angle appears as a vertical line, interfering with the image. This doesn't happen when used with terrestrial targets. That's why 45º diagonals are not used in astronomical observations. As always, thanks for the excellent review! 👍👍🤜🤜🤛🤛🔭🔭🔭🔭

I just upgraded from a standard mirror diagonal that came with the telescope to a 99% reflectivity dielectric diagonal and the performance is incredible. A dielectric diagonal is the way to go.

i am thinking to get Sharpstar 61EDPH II with all the hype it has to see if it hold true to its name, could you recommend a good diagonal for that telescope (if price was not a deciding factor)? The targets are to spot DSOs like galaxies and nebulas. thanks!

I have a 575mm F6 scope that has trouble with IN FOCUS using 2" mirror diagonals. Will a 2" prism diagonal help with in focus? Thanks
@AllanHall
2 жыл бұрын
Probably not. During the day, check the focus on a tree top or some other far away object. Is it closer in focus with the focuser all the way in, or all the way out? If all the way in, get a low powered barlow and that should help. If all the way out, get a cheap hollow extension tube and that should solve the issue.

Hi! I Buy a telescope for My child and there is a plástic in the diagonal, black and round over the mirror, i have to remove that or what? Sry My English is pretty Bad. It's a cheap telescope for begginers.

The Amici prism's both 45 and 90 degree produce spikes. Celestron Powerseeker's with the ball shaped diagonals use the Amici prisms. If you get a Star Diagonal then the prisms work quite well without the spike. As one other commented the Celestron Star Diagonal 94115-A is a good diagonal that has been sold for decades. Another issue with 45 degree diagonal is they are cumbersome when viewing the zenith.

Would a prism diagonal improve the sharpness of image on my Celestron PS70/700? Or perhaps I should buy a more advanced telescope. Thanks.
@AllanHall

A prism diagonal is not going to help. Yes, a more advanced telescope will help too, but taking the time to learn about viewing will help far more than throwing money at the problem. Seeing conditions, using the right eyepiece, not using a barlow, darker skies, and patience will all help far more than a $2,000 telescope.

@@AllanHall Thanks. I'll get some better quality eyepieces, rather than buying another telescope. Thanks again for those tips, it's saved me a lot of money.

Bought a astrotech reducer and a Orion diagonal, but the threads are different. The male threads of the reducer are 48mm. Wish i could see the threads on diagonals before buying.

I can't see anything with my Celestron Erect Image Prism through my Celestron NexStar 130 SLT. No matter how much I focus, in daylight, everything is just grey.
