You did exactly the right thing. To remain there would have ruined your enjoyment of your usual trips to the woods. And to remove that sanctuary from the ways to relieve your conditions would have had a huge detrimental effect on you. And who knows where that would lead to. Keep going one day at a time, one camp out at a time, one walk at a time. It's more important for you to be here to make videos than for us to look back on them in your memory ❤

Thank you for a wonderful video. I truly tip my cap to you Sir. you have inspired and encouraged me to say it is ok to have some mental health issues, and I will do my best to seek the help or just having someone to share with {outside of family} I have yet to try wild camping here in Southern Ontario, Canada but I am at my most peaceful being outdoors in my yard. After seeing how calming for the soul it can be, I will try to actually get out to nature Thank you, once again Barney. Cheers!

Hi, thanks for checking out the video, glad you enjoyed it and recognise that it is ok to talk about mental health issues. Sometimes your head isn't going to be in the right place and you need to confront those matters. I imagine you have some amazing countryside to explore in Ontario, hope you're able to get outdoors and enjoy the landscape and listen to nature 👍

Great video mate, you made the right decision in my view and no need to reproach yourself for stepping off the course, brave decision. Loved the debris extension to your shelter and your humour was still evident despite the challenges! A lot of positives from the course as you said not least the fact that it clarified for you what makes the woods such a special place. Look forward to catching up with you on a camp soon Gavin. 👏👏👍

Ah, Barney. Just watched your vid. Hats off to you for your candour, and I reckon you did the right thing. The last thing you want to do is spoil the feeling you get when you’re out in the woods. The shelter you made was pretty good, so kudos for that! Focus on what you enjoy about it. Funnily enough, I was out in the woods a couple of weeks ago, it had gotten dark, couldn’t find a decent spot to sling the hooped Bivi, covered in midges and just decided to pull the ripcord. Went to the pub, then home. These things happen!!

Were them Beeches really ‘87 casualties? Most excellent!!! I was in Kos then, getting drunk 😊 Them subs are rising up mate 😉👍🏼 As it goes, you say you aren’t a “survivalist person” but, you already are. With all the knowledge you hold, you can survive. I don’t care what you say. The situation you were in (as a student) put pressure on you. How many times have you been out over the years in similar situations and done good at your own pace? LOADS! I tell you something now. I’d rather be in a position to learn off my core folks I sub to than attend a course and get flustered. No pressure off you folks when I am learning from your vids. You know enough to survive anyway , Gav. You don’t need to carry any shame my mate. Let me tell you!!!

Hi Tim, yep those Beeches were wiped out in 87, a lot of the more exposed trees in that woodland got decimated, I was only a littl'un but I remember it was quite a spectacular sight to behold. Many thanks for your kind comments though matey, they chime with a lot of others that I've received and I wholeheartedly agree. I'll continue to learn and practice the skills, but on my own terms from now on. We must schedule that camp soon 👍

If it ain’t raining it ain’t training 😂 On a serious note it’s only a “failure” if you fail to learn from it and although it was a bit of an ordeal you now have a better understanding of your abilities, the kit you used, skills you have and what you need to work on or develop, or not. I appreciate your honesty and candour and putting it out there on a public forum such as this can’t have been an easy decision but as I say to my kids: “that which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” Hopefully, with the passage of time you will feel more positive about the whole thing and it’ll be type 2 fun.

This has provoked a lot of thought for me mate and that is the best kind of vid. All the very valid reasons you give for realising the course just wasn't working out for you are the sort of reasons I have for being a mollycoddled glamper compared to you - I do tend to avoid any dodgy weather, and I have a sort of rule of never planning a camp for a certain date when I don't know the weather is going to be working in my favour rather than against me. Like you say, it's a mini holiday and reset from day to day life - a treat, not a penance. The minimal nature of my own kit sometimes is informed by the fact that I have to walk a fair distance with it and be discreet, rather than any conscious decision to rehearse for a survival situation or be overly macho about it all. If I was caught in that situation, I hope I could botch something together that would get me through a miserable, stranded night, but it wouldn't be fun or relaxing, and it looks like it wasn't for you either. Add to that a sort of timetabled work or school type pressure to perform on any course, plus being around new people (and all the hard work of niceties that brings, even if they are like minded and sound, as I'm sure everyone was) and as you say you start to make the very thing that gives you pleasure into something you potentially want to 'escape' from. I think if this has made you self reflect, even if a bit painfully, on what you want out of all this then it was money well spent, and that lesson alone was probably of more value than anything specific you learned about survival skills on the course. You're still a young lad yet Barney and you have a lot of outdoors adventures to look forward to - never apologise for doing it on the terms that make you happy. Just continue doing you. All the very best matey 👍 Rich PS - you have immaculate taste in smocks 😉
@barneysbimbles
Жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, many thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'm glad that it's been able to provoke some thought. I completely agree with you. I'm drawing value from the experience gained on that course and shall put those lessons learnt into practice. I think so long as you have the right equipment in your bag then the weather isn't such an issue, put a tarp over one's head, add some warm clothes/bedding and some food and drink and the weather can do what it likes for all I care. Indeed I often take some pleasure from 'winning' in those scenarios and drinking in the sights while mother nature unleashes her fury. It pays to have a plan though, knowing what you need to do and having the confidence in your kit etc. Whenever I do a more minimal kit camp, I always ensure those bases are covered. Those Helikon Pilgrim smocks are great aren't they. I washed it in some Nikwax Cotton Proof recently and while it will never completely waterproof the smock, it has helped it bead up a bit better and shed a good rain shower. Thanks as always for watching Rich, All the best 👍

Hats off to you Barney . Sometimes these things don't work out mate. We live and learn. I think you did the right thing mate . I was thinking of doing a basic camp like that , but in my own neck of the woods with my own time frame and my back up gear right there. Don't feel comfortable processing lots of wood and having big fires where I go though mate so I'm going to smooth it ( mostly 😂) Nice to see you getting back out. Your candid honesty is refreshing mate. Take care bud 👌🏕

Cheers Mark, appreciate the comments. I'd definitely recommend going a bit more minimal with the kit and testing yourself, albeit on your own terms. I get what you mean about the all-night fire, especially when you camp in coniferous woodland as you need to be really careful. But, we're approaching the time of year now where you don't necessarily need a fire all night as a wool blanket and suitable clothing will keep you warm enough. All the best 👍

Sounds like you made right decision m8. You get to age where you just do you and plus it just strengthened the real reason why you go to the woods just to get away from it all. But that being said if was warmer and brighter weather I’m sure sprits would been higher and enjoyed your self more on the course. I Just found a nice spot up woods so going to minimal camp with my daughter.

Joe is a top quality guy and instructor, as is Kev, and I’m sure would be willing to help you navigate through any obstacles you perceive. I’ve done a couple of courses in that unbelievable woodland and long to find an opportunity to go back there, albeit 160 miles etc has provided obstacles. I hope you can find a way to revisit the concept, and I’m sure if you break it down into weekend components Des would help you plot a route through the obstacles and get 6th moving forward.
