Some black adults are still really wary of any dog thats bigger than a cat, for understandable reasons. My sister's small husky mix accidentally scared a guy when she ran towards him to say hi. I had to apologize and tell him she meant well, she just had a lot of energy and liked people a lot.

Similarly, I'm a black vet tech. Veterinary is the whitest field at 97% so it's extremely isolating and you face a lot of racism. First week at my current clinic my coworkers would complain about me being lazy, passive aggressive comments, talked to as if I was stupid. Eventually one coworker got bold enough to yell at me infront of everyone and I guess because I'm a quiet passive person they didn't expect me to yell back so she complained to management about it. After that situation I guess management has told everyone to pipe down so they dont get a lawsuit and ive actually been able to do my job. It's not like anything has even been subtle. Coworkers have literally been like "you should be mopping" right infront of the clinic manager. They never try to hide it because they're so bold with their feelings toward me. When your black in vet med, people always assume you know less despite me having more experience than majority of my coworkers. Like literally yesterday we had a cat that didn't like the vet and I was telling her to do X,Y, and Z but she didn't want to.... the cat ended up latching its claws into her face and someone had to pull it off. I'm a white Jewish person and this video spoke to me. Fear of dogs is a big thing in Hasidic/Haredi ("ultra-orthodox" but that term is kind of antisemitic and meaningless) Jewish households. My grandfather was a holocaust survivor and grew up in that environment, he told me how the SS guards used German Shepherds to literally rip people apart. My grandfather himself wasn't afraid of dogs and he had dogs when I was growing up, since he didn't stay in that religious environment. But his brother, who survived and stayed in that community, was definitely afraid of dogs. And as far as I know none of my religious cousins have any pets.

I’m a black woman who adopted an abused 3 yr old pitbull from a shelter who has severe anxiety. Not many people would do that, let alone understand why someone else would, but we just connected and I was so emotional after hearing his story. He gets scared by other dogs and people because he’s had bad experiences with both. My bf and I have slowly gotten him more socialized with my mom’s dogs and stuff but it’s just so sad that other people probably see him as aggressive and scary when he’s really just a big baby who’s scared 😢 and it obviously doesn’t help that I’m black, I feel like people I live around stereotype us both 🫤

Honestly, good job queen. My aunt's husky was in a puppy mill & was adopted into a *horribly* abusive household before my aunt adopted her, and years later she still has awful anxiety. I know the behavior (and the stigma) between the two dogs are different, but they're both big, strong dogs. I don't know if your good boy does anything similar, but Luna (the traumatized husky) shies away as far as she can before she lashes out (she only barks super loud), which breaks my heart because she's so sweet and gentle. Even those these dogs have the _capability_ to harm someone doesn't mean they will, we just need to show patience and kindness until they realize that no one's going to harm them. Thank you for giving the good boy a chance, you're doing so well & you're so awesome 💖

Honestly, pitbulls are real people pleasers. I usually only take in rescues, and usually only dogs over 100 lbs, so I've never had a pitbull personally. But I've seen what a good home can do to a rescue from a terrible situation, and I've had plenty of friends with pitbulls that I've helped train and socialize. They learn so quickly. I'm used to much more stubborn and independent dogs, so the first time I helped train a pitbull I was blown away by how quickly they can learn things. They can be wonderful dogs anyway, but an abused dog given a warm home and enough time to come out of their shell can be amazing. They'll never forget what you did for them, and that often makes them extra lovable IME. Good for you. I hate the reputation pitbulls have. I'm glad you were able to see beyond that and give one a loving home.

I remember my mom believing the stereotype that "black people can't swim" and she explained it by saying their muscles are more dense 😭😭 It didn't hit me how ridiculous that was until college biology class (which is why I think 2 yrs in community college should be as mandatory as high school!) And then when my mom and I watched the Olympics one year and saw a BLACK GIRL COME IN FIRST IN SWIMMING!!! OMG that was amazing! I got to explain it all to my mom about how it was a myth and the real reason was SEGREGATION - if your parents weren't allowed in a pool, how can they learn and then teach their kids how to swim? It's literally simple generational BS that was caused by how white people treated black people! She came over to the good side. Not only would anyone who had a problem with the attention I give my dogs be an instant write off, but since I usually take in abused rescues and work hard to resocialize and train them, if my dogs didn't like someone I won't either. I trust their ability to read people, especially after coming from abusive homes into a loving one. They don't forget what those kind of people are like. So if that's the vibe someone is giving off to my dog, they might as well just forget I exist.

I’m allergic to cats and have always loved dogs. As soon as I moved out of, I got a chihuahua as a graduation present. He was the first baby I ever had before I had my children, and he was special because my now husband gave him to me before he became “our” dog as I moved in with him not long after graduation. We said goodbye to him in October 2021 after 15 years, and it still hurts me to talk about. We adopted a second chi about five years after getting the first one, and he’s still with us today though we are both not looking forward to the inevitable. I hate stereotypes that insinuate that Black people don’t care about animals or fear all animals - that’s never been me! I respect and adore nature and lovingly care for any pets I have. My father, who grew up in a segregated South, has an understandable fear of dogs.

Exactly! I loved animals from birth, and the stereotypes made me feel kinda alone. I got excited and happy just seeing a snake and petting a bearded dragon. I've even held a piglet on Halloween and just gave up pork altogether. I was never crazy about it, anyway, but piggies! I didn't want to let go of the baby! I even pet a cow and held a chicken. It was a petting zoo. 😅 I have two guinea piggies now, but I'm hoping to add a puppy to my furry family in the future. ❤

Isn't this stereotyping and perpetuating some homogenized notions that probably should not apply to every single person that has a certain physical visual feature. People are individual and they experience different cultural influences in the geographic environment they are in. So I don't think black people are universally the same the world over. In the USA you see regional class-based cultural variations. Then there's that whole individual life experience thing. Everyone is an individual. Unfortunately people seem to generalize too much by sizing others up as being all alike based on physical appearance. Buuuuuuuuuuut they're not all alike! Ive lived in too many different places! I just know better. Someone black from Mississippi isn't like someone black in Chicago. Someone black from Nigeria isn't like someone from Kenya. Someone black that is from London England is probably very British influenced. Ya get what I'm saying? Someone black that was born and raised in Germany for instance is going to be nothing like someone black that was born and raised in New Jersey. I just find this interesting, okay? Because black (or white) isn't some globally universal experience. Everyone is different. I felt like saying that.

1. Sister-in-law's got one (name was Jo-Jo) I guess there was a middle class trend towards pits so they got it from a breeder and upon meeting the dog the first time it was clear she had no idea how to maintain boundaries and that it would be a huge problem. Sure as hell one day out of training school it tore apart my cos's kid's face with on totally unprovoked bite. Absolute horror show. I still don't enter my brother's house with that dog there. I took in their last dog when they got bored of her and it was great, but if they want to get rid of Jo-Jo they'll have to find another taker. 2. Cousin always wanted a pit or a boxer. I'd lived with him for several failed attempts at raising a puppy - it was never something he could stick with while drugs consumed so much of his time and energy. After several years of incarceration & addiction treatment he ended up marrying his baby mamma and adopting a 3 legged pitbull with a history of abuse (Diamond). This scared me because of the above incident, especially since his kids have some instability of their own (Their eldest was about three before they'd managed to get fully clean, and had drugs in system from birth). My cos is very patient and conscientous and did a great job training and rehabilitating this new pup, I think it did him a lot of good spiritually as well. Everyone loves Diamond, she's a joyful creature. Recently my cos' home was broken into and Diamond scared the robber under the table yet never attacked him. It kept him still 'til my 'cos got home and could handle the situation - The robber was just a hungry addict so my cos let him go with some rehab info, and a prayer, and a promise that it wouldn't end that well if they tried to break in again. 3. Found a pit with no collar wandering around my small town and lured her into a closed courtyard while I tried to find the owner. People acted like I should be extremely careful, like I'd just captured a wolverine, but she was sweet as could be. Turns out the owner was pretty trash and someone else I'd met while looking for the owner had offered to take her in and raise her with her six other dogs. Old owner didn't object so the the dog went to a new home that day. A few moths later I heard that sweet pit had actually killed a different dog in the kennel. Some dogs have very different behavior among themselves than with humans. 4. I understand how Pits in particular are used as a gateway argument for 'race realism', but I think people buy into the breed=race idea when they reflexively dismiss everything as "it's the owner not the dog". Claiming they're just golden retrievers with bad public-relations, seems pretty unconvincing. There are a lot of dimensions to the situation - a pit with the brain of a golden retriever would still have their behavior influenced by the stereotypes people bring into their interactions. Mostly though I think the Uncle Ben principle applies "With great power comes great responsibility".

@@RobertDrane As the owner of a pibull who's worked with others, I appreciate your comment. Both extremes of the debate get it wrong, imo. Most pitbulls are friendly towards humans, and the ones that aren't are the exception not the rule, but they still are powerful dogs with intense personalities, so IF something goes wrong it can go very wrong. So, I think they should not be banned, but some people should realize they're not the right match for that breed and get something else.

Same in China- animals are workers first, with only the rich keeping companion pets. If i had to guess why pets are so common in europe (or at least in britain) id say the cold is part of it. Often all animals (including 'farm' animals like cows and pigs) would be brought inside the home during winter, so for 3-4 months youd be living in close quarters with your animals. I think this is probably why pet ownership is such a predominant feature of brittish life- to the point where 'the brittish love their animals more than people' has been a common feature for hundreds of years. Honestly my in laws have always been suprised by the amount of pets and the attention theyre lavished with in britain.Especially as these pets almost inherently will be living in close quarters with people theres a huge emphasis on training and socialising dogs to be tolerant/affectionate of strangers and strange situations. So its a very different pet culture.

RE: dogs being taught to be racist, I'd like to share this story about my dog that was quite the opposite. When walking outside, my dog would sometimes (want to) happily run towards people who she thought she knew, usually women who looked like my mother from behind and/or afar. She always looked so sweet that once we yelled an explanatory "you don't know that person, girl!", the strangers would be completely at ease. One day she did this with a black lady and as I yelled the explanatory phrase, the woman laughed and continued on her way. But I was secretly confused because... everyone in our inner circle was white. My parents are white. Their entire friend circle is white. There was no way my dog could've confused this lady with anyone from our inner circle, yet it was the same kind of response. I guess she just felt the good vibes 😂

A lot of times it’s really about body language with dogs. I have dogs who are pretty quick to stop barking at people because they were either guests or were delivering things to me, so my dogs didn’t see them as a threat, but the mail lady who yelled at me? They barked at her like she was a coyote. Probably that lady wasn’t threatening at all to your dog.
@youraftermyrobotbee

Animals totally pick up body language. You see this phenomenon with cats as well, usually the paradox where the person who is trying to avoid the cat is the person the cat likes the most (because in cat psychology, "I am coexisting with you at a distance" is the same thing as "you are my friend!", and "I want to pet you" is "you are getting up in my space and scaring me".) There's a communication barrier of sorts, but animals can be relied on to determine friendly vibes.

That book is full of disinformation. The narrative that people started to dislike Pit Bulls in the 80s was completely made up by Diane Jessup and Louis Colby in their 1997 book, and later amplified in Dickey's Pit Bull as well as in pseudo-academic papers by other (coincidentally all white) authors. To me, the manufacturing of that whole narrative sounds like a way to surreptitiously scapegoat minorities while at the same time using them as an excuse to dismantle BSL (which does not necessarily mean bans but muzzling/leashing ordinances) and to plant in people's heads the horrible idea that it's somehow okay to compare people and animals. In his 1936 book, The American Pit Bull Terrier, Joseph Colby was already talking about the bad reputation of the breed saying that, "[t]he general public is under the impression that this breed is carnivorous, vicious, and fed on a diet of raw meat, would devour a human being" (p. 20). Colby then goes on to say how people are mistaken and then exalts the virtues of the breed, and continues, "Yet, these traits can be shown with all sincerity on the part of the dog and a few minutes later, set down against another dog, he will fight with the cunning instinct of a wild animal with intent to kill." (All dogs can snap, but a dog that "will fight with the cunning instinct of a wild animal" when it snaps, might not be the best dog to have around the house.) A 1911 article announcing that "Pet Pit Bulls" would form a new dog show class and stating breeders would "seek to prove the gentleness of [the] breed" said this: "Those persons who imagine the chief end of pit bulldogs to wage unending warfare upon all other dogs and to increase the canine invalid population as quickly as possible will have the perfect opportunity to find that the pit dog is a perfect gentleman if mankind will leave him alone and not put naughty ideas in his head." (The Evening World, New York. Saturday, February 11, 1911, p. 4) A Humane Officer discussing a 1914 breed-specific ordinance requiring owners of Pit dogs to keep them leashed and muzzled said this, "The French, Boston and English Bulldogs are not combative animals, but the pit bull terrier and English terrier are natural fighters and do the damage." (The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington. Monday, August 17, 1914, p. 6) A 1913 letter to the editors had this to say: "It is high time that an ordinance is passed ordering all dogs running at large to be muzzled or at least the bull dogs and bull terriers. Other cities have ordinances of this kind, made necessary by the same trouble which is prevalent here. There is no other class of dogs giving as much trouble or as completely useless as the bull dog species. If a man wants to have a fighting dog following at his heels he should have the right to do so provided that dog is not a menace or a nuisance to the rest of the people. A good substantial muzzle would stop the fights and not interfere with the liberty of the bull dogs." (The Times-News, Twins Falls, Idaho. Friday, August 22, 1913, p. 2) In a 1947 discussing pit dog breeds and the fatal mauling of a child, the author closes with the following statement: "Until the dog fancier does a good cleanup job he will have a hard time convincing all the public about the desirable qualities of certain breeds." (The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati, Ohio. Sunday, September 21, 1947, p. 79) The narrative that Pit Bulls were great military dogs was also fabricated. The dogs most sought after by the Dogs for Defense program during WWII were Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, and German Shepherds. If they had been as popular as Dickey claims, they would have been featured front and center in this recruitment short film: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xquBr5-Yh4mHqKw (If you have Dickey's book, look for the military photo she used, search the AP archives, and see how many more you find featuring Pit Bulls versus other breeds). As far as I could find out, the propaganda posters featuring a Pit Bull were created privately, not by the military. And Stubby was a Boston Terrier mix, not Pit Bull. You can read an interview with Conroy's grandson in a Military Times article entitled "Stubby's story: All about the iconic WWI 'war dog'... and star of an upcoming animated film." Boston Terriers were indeed a very popular breed in the early part of the 20th century. By claiming confusion over breed identification, Dickey engaged in quite a bit of breed history appropriation in her book. Boston Terriers were the true favorite dog of early 20th century America. Dickey also ignores the issue of neo-nazis and skinheads parading with Pit Bulls in the 80s and 90s, so much so that the SPLC and ADL list Pit Bulls among the symbols of white supremacy and Keystone State Skinheads chose it as its symbol. Take a look at this study and compare it with what Dickey says too about dogs biting children: Garth F. Essig, Cameron Sheehan, Shefali Rikhi, Charles A. Elmaraghy, J. Jared Christophel, Dog bite injuries to the face: Is there risk with breed ownership? A systematic review with meta-analysis, International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Volume 117, 2019, Pages 182-188, ISSN 0165-5876

I love my Nala Bear so so much. Thought she was a basenji mix when I rescued her. Fell in love. When she hit 50 pounds at 6 months old (basenjis top out at 25 pounds) the dna test revealed she is a pitbull/boxer/chow mix. The chow traits give her the stand up pointy ears and curly tail that basenjis have. I was concerned. I had been susceptible to the pitbull bias. But, it truly is about the owner. I have had her professionally trained and I still do a lot of work with her (she 2). She is the sweetest, cuddliest and loyal being I have ever known. Yes, she is stubborn, but when issued a command, she obeys. As someone who was regularly chased by dogs trained to sic black folks in the 80s south, having Nala empowers me. Dogs were a tool of racism. But we all deserve pet ownership if we choose. Great video!!!

Thank you! This episode filled in some gaps of my understanding about the history of dogs in this country. Growing up, we had a Rottweiler as a yard dog, I wasn't afraid of him, but there were so many untrained dogs in our neighborhood that I developed a fear of large dogs. I got chased home by a German Shepard and despite living on a busy road, no one stopped to help, I was saved by the crossing guard that let me jump in her car. I have a red-eared slider turtle, not currently interested in owning any mammals as pets.

If you love Cats but are allergic. You should check out breeds that are really low in the Fel D1 protein. Siberian, Bengal, and Russian Blue are all ideal. It all depends on your level of allergy, most people can slowly build build up an immunity.

I wish people started seeing the problem of getting an animal as a pet. The pet cannot consent and it will never again have any autonomy since it will always have to rely on the human to get all their needs cover, something that most people with a savior complex will say "If I left my dog free, it would die". Well of course, it will eat whenever the owner wants it to and it will play when the owner wants and the OWNER is RESPONSIBLE for its pets inability to live free . The selfishness of people owing pets today, just to cover their own needs of feeling important and having company and their inability to see their relationship as it is, always amazes me. Great video as always!

I actually agree. I had a pet and didn’t feel right the entire time. I gave her back. It was painful because I did love her but the capitalism mixed with the savior complex your talking about made me sick.. on top of that they love us, the pets, but we really downplay how much of that love is dependency. I don’t want anything dependent on me. And you know what else? I really didn’t feel better having her around and coming home to her who’d been home all day while I was stressed running around out in this crazy world. And it wasn’t my space anymore…idk maybe I’m just not a pet person lol. Or maybe we’re onto something…

What is forgotten - when talking about how statistically speaking small dogs are the most aggressive ones or do the most biting or something - would you rather get attacked by 60kg of muscle and teeth or a 5kg dog that can't reach anything above your knees? I don't worry a lot when I see people with small aggressive dogs on a leash, but I do very much worry when I see big strong dogs with people who won't be able to control the dog if they decide to attack. I would never get a dog I can't handle in every situation. It doesn't matter how lovely the dog is, anything can happen. In my childhood a super kind and chill dog started suddenly attacking other dogs and even people. It was put down for safety reasons and the post mortem revealed he had grown a braintumor.

That dude is some special kind of idiot, I can’t imagine what he’s thinking or what his goal is… It kind sounds like he thinks he’s cute and imagines you and he have some kind of inside joke, some people are that clueless, OR he’s found a way to get away with being racist at work and enjoys it… those are the 2 things that come to mind… but I guess he could be completely unaware what he’s doing… I know that I need to be made aware of how I’m acting from time to time, and I’ve told all my people that I need help, I can only work on my flaws if I’m aware of them. Maybe it’s giving him too much grace on the topic but maybe let him know what he’s doing and why it’s inappropriate, but if he’s just doing it to be racist then I’d suggest setting him up sl he can expose himself to everyone else. Also, that’s why I never watch anything without my earbuds! If these clowns knew what I’m listening to they’d probably break out the pitchforks and torches.

I’m really glad I saw this. My dad and his side of the family have been pretty big into dogs, especially my grandma because my late grandfather wouldn’t let my grandma own a gun, but got her a dog. I also spent a significant portion of my life as a white person with a white family in a predominantly black neighborhood and had noticed a significant portion of the folks there were pretty wary of dogs. I wasn’t aware of the racial and cruel history of dog ownership and slavery, but I’m glad I now know. I usually assume someone doesn’t like a dog because they personally had a bad experience growing often times because they were never taught how to properly interact with them, but learning this history has made me aware that this isn’t the case for everyone and to be mindful that not everyone has the same experiences. I send much love to the black pet owners and their pets, I sure as hell would not have been here without mine, and I’m glad y’all have started to reclaim pet ownership. As a white person I also don't like them, not really because of stereotypes but they NEED NEED NEED training. I've grown up with dogs my whole life and all of my bad interactions were with German Shepherds, poorly trained, but still. A lot of them are not very friendly in nature, they're kinda head strong like Shiba inus or Huskies but they're like... assholes. Honestly most bully breeds are still sweeter and have better temperament even without proper training. I'm honestly not entirely sure why German Shepherds are used in service because they're not easy to train and they kind of suck. AGAIN I'm not trying to stereotype but it's been my experience, I live on a farm I'm genuinely not really scared of big farm animals or even big dogs, we have a Great Pyr who weighs 140 and he's a baby. But every single German shepherd I've run into has tried to fight with my dogs, has jumped on me, I saw a German shepherd jump on a child at a dog park, etc. They're just really head strong and they kind of attach to one or two care takers so even when they're well behaved they kinda do what they want. Not ideal for a family dog.

Regardless of who you are, just don’t hit your dogs or hurt them physically, there are thousands of ways to train them without using that type of reinforcement. It’s harder, yes, but trust me, the dogs lives a softer life, full of love, which is what we have unconsciously molded it to be. Edit: we have molded it to be something that receives unconditional love like a child, maybe in the past they were just animals we worked alongside with and even to this day we still have working, hunting, guarding and service dogs, but if we know there are better ways why aren’t we trying them?

And yes, she was specifically speaking on Black children b/c the post was about protecting Black children yet she felt the need to bring up how she has more empathy & compassion for dogs as if Black kids deserve to suffer. 🙃But I'm gaslit for pointing out how racist this is. And a lot of white vegans feel this way too but nobody really talks about when racism meets veganism.

This was so interesting! I live in a very Jewish area, and many older people are afraid of dogs. A huge reason is the association with use of dogs during the Holocaust to control, intimidate, and attack Jews. I have friends my own age who hate German shepherds specifically because of that association, even though they otherwise like dogs. That imagery and generational memory is really strong. In Israel and other parts of the ME, there is superstition regarding black dogs-much like superstition surrounding black cats in other countries. Religious Jews often feel that they caring for pets may conflict with keeping to religious laws of the household. Meanwhile Tel Aviv (a very young and secular city) is considered to be the most dog friendly city in the world. Every restaurant and shop puts out water bowls for dogs and allows them inside. There are around 70 dog parks, several dog beaches, and even doggy spas and summer camps. It has the highest ratio of pet dogs to people on earth at 1:17. It is also among the cities with the highest number of vegans per capita. Every culture has its unique relationship and history with animals and I really enjoyed this video!

This is such a great video. I’m a white dog owner/dog walker/pet sitter in Philly and the demographic of neighbors and clients LOVE their pets in my area. Less so due to race I actually see class differences with both how dogs can be cared for(such as training is expensive so many owners don’t have the access to handle in more modern ways but are interested to learn if educated kindly.) I also directly see how they help shape our communities in more positive ways. Neighbors are more conscientious about sound, food litter, keeping their dogs on leash, and educating their kids how to interact with dogs safely. I wanted to mention the correct pronunciation is Belgian MAL-IN-WAH. They are one of the four Belgian Groenendaels. In the USA/AKC we recognize all 4 varieties as separate breeds but in Europe/FCI they recognize them all as the same breed but different coat varieties, which means there they can be bred interchangeably if registration records are accurately kept. Nifty breed but they are definitely being used, like GSD, to be heavy handed in low income and black communities.
