Forge welding 18 guage, color me impressed. Thinnest Ive tried to weld is 16 gauge and ill be danged if i got one hit per weld before the anvil sucked the heat out of it, and that was on a very hot to the touch anvil!

Hi: It may have helped that it was 90 F with 85% humidity. Don't think the humidity helped! Daniel

..Wow, welding sheet metal with a scarf. Impressive Professor indeed. i do good if i can get the little Hopsings Fortune wire welder to not burn it up. i'm not a welder and don't play one on the internet or TV...

Thanks Dan, this is a great way to weld a hoop, I've been wondering how to do it. I wonder, how small in diameter this will work for? Making hoops for chisel handles has been something I've struggled to weld, and the slit and drift method has been too uneven for me. This could work with enough care, and some cold forging after the weld. I have been using iron pipe for chisel hoops, but that's not as fun as making them from scratch.

Hi: I think the chain link welding method would work better for chisel hoops. Maybe the Ouroboros scarf. Another video! Daniel

I am about halfway between Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross, Roy Underhill without the jokes and clowning? Odd ven diagram it would be, but it's me. Daniel

Hi Daniel. I suspect you’ve mentioned it before, but which filter do you use on your camera? I’d like to be able to better capture hot metal on camera myself.

Hi: They are called gray cut filters, or moon filters by the telescope people. Rated by what % of total light they let pass. i use a 25% , and that means you need a lot of light to keep the contrast . I turn on 5 or 6 lamps with the filter. I also have an IR filter stacked with the gray filter, that cuts glare a good bit. Result is still not what would be seen if you were watching live . It does not look like I am forging a magnesium flare, the look without any filters. Biggest problem is that most cameras have an auto-balance built in, and it was not designed to handle 2000 degree metal. Daniel
