I guess I’m the only target audience for this camera. I’ve shot an original (Made in Germany first run) Rollie 35 for years, and it’s my favorite film compact. It puts a fully featured manual camera in the palm of your hand. No weird holding button combos down to disable flash or force exposure comp like consumer point and shoots; this was a point and shoot for people who wanted full control. So the idea of having that camera updated is a total win for me. I’ve got no complaints. As long as the UX is similar to the original with the added bonus of not needing to scale focus, I’m winning here.

The points about the ergonomics are fair and informative, but this is very explicitly a retro project to “remake” a Rollei 35 right down to the branding. So I think the ergonomics are simply part of the package. It’s not really a Rollei 35 anymore if you get rid of the left hand film advance, boxy shape, tiny size, dials on the front, etc.

I don’t want to say that it was a bad decision to copy the Rollei 35, but it’s a decision I don’t like. In the context of the original Rollei 35, it was hard to get a good lens and mostly full featured camera in anything close to that small. A smaller film size like a 16mm miniature camera necessarily meant a sizeable loss in resolution. Putting it next to something like a Yashica Electro or other fixed-lens rangefinder, the size difference was meaningful. And still, the old Rollei 35 models had a lot of compromises compared to larger cameras. Even compared to viewfinder cameras of the day, the Rollei was 1/3rd the volume. But in a digital world, you can get IQ as good from a compact like the Ricoh GR, and everyone has a phone, so the need for absolute compactness isn’t quite as large-there are a lot of alternatives for small cameras which take good pictures, not necessarily on film, but still. But there isn’t really a widespread larger alternative you’re competing against, new film SLRs and rangefinders are not common like they were in 1966. So Mint made a camera perhaps smaller than it needed to be, and the size means the camera has a few more compromises than it needed to have. The one that sticks with me is the lack of a filter thread, combined with the fact that the light sensor is off to the side, so even an attachment to add a filter is going to be awkward, and would require trickery to get proper auto exposure. A hypothetical camera which was a bit bigger (Lomo LCA or Pentax 17 size, for example-still fairly small), there might have been more room for less fiddly controls, nicer grip, information in the finder like the Polaroid i2, getting the meter under a filter, and so forth, while still being pocketable (jacket pocket at least), and a more full-featured 35mm camera than anything else on the market. So while Mint made a decent camera in the end, I guess I just don’t really like the decision to copy the Rollei. It feels like an unnecessary limitation.
@jamescole322

@@thebitterfig9903 Lomo LCA is just as small as this Rollei 35, with terrible controls. The Rollei design is much better
@thebitterfig9903

@@jamescole322 I did see some pictures of the original Rollei and Mint's version side by side, and it was noticeably larger. If you say that it's at least as big as the LCA, I see that as an indictment of the Mint design. If you aren't even getting a meaningfully more compact camera than something no-frills like the LCA, there's no reason for the excessively cramped design. They put a big limitation on themselves. The Rollei 35AF has a lot of controls... but they're fairly awkwardly placed. The Winding lever is kind of silly. I know I keep harping about the meter, but that seems like a sizeable unforced error that cuts down on a lot of creative options with very poor options for fixing it. Meanwhile, there's a giant top-plate that's essentially unused. "But it's like the original" doesn't excuse it--they made a decision to make it like the original. The original at least had a light meter on top.

This is a great review with real world use cases. I know a lot of people were clowning on the Pentax 17 and waiting for this, but I think some of them are in for a surprise when they have to live with some of the ergonomic quirks that are faithful to the original. I'm not personally racing to pay $800 because I have used an original model and didn't love those quirks, but I respect this company's commitment to being faithful to the original while making some upgrades. I'm really glad this exists even if it isn't for me. To each their own!

I like the stiffer controls because it gets just tossed in a pocket so you don't have to worry about accidentally changing it. There are some people online who make 3d printed hoods for the older ones not sure if they would work on this one but worth looking into.

Does not matter what camera comes out. The film community is its own worse enemy when it comes to anything new in the film photography world. People can’t get over the fact that the camera just might not be for them and that should be ok. But instead they try to find fault and drag it down to prevent people from buying. Peeps need to be happy we are getting anything new in film cameras in 2024. We got two brand new film cameras in one year that should be celebrated in my opinion. Great review!

The price seems very fair too. What sort of new product, which they have spent years working on, do people think should be cheaper? What quality digi cams are cheaper? Anyway, thank you for the videos and instagram comments. i am very happy about the new point and shoot camera, especially because the used cameras with similar functions are very expensive. what bothers me a little is that it doesn't have a fully automatic mode. basically i like to shoot in aperture priority mode BUT: if you don't have an indicator that shows the shutter speed, you simply don't have a stopping point of what aperture range you can use for the current lighting situation before the image blurs or is severely overexposed. i would have liked either a fully automatic mode or a shutter speed indicator.

Good review, thank you, learned a lot from this. Respectfully I'd disagree with the notion that manual control over shutter speed is not useful in this format. On contrary, I would argue that this camera is designed to be all-round camera that ppl always carry with them (like Rollei 35 back in the day) and would be used in different situations, some require more precise control over the exposure (or dare I say, even using a tripod or gorillapod). Obviously there are better cameras out there for more manual work but not all ppl have that collection in hand (or constantly with them). So my impression is that adding a precise (optional) manual control makes this more versatile tool compared to the new Pentax 17 for example that unfortunately offers only auto exposure modes.

This was a fantastic realistic review. I ordered mine as soon as they let me. I did expect a lot of quirks based on my owning the old ones, so I’m okay with this aspect. And like another person mentioned as an owner of the old model, this re-imagining with autofocus is a welcome upgrade. I was never a fan of the scale focus and that botched up a lot of shots for me since I kept forgetting to change and forget about shooting f2.8 or f3.5 in focus unless you have a rangefinder eye, which I do not. So yeah, happy to support this, and it will be fun to use when appropriate. I also own the Pentax 17 and no its not perfect but it is also fun and has its place. And I kinda like all this fiddly stuff because after shooting only film for the last 4 months, I missed all the hands on. Digital is boring to me now.

Sources for a leaf shutter mechanism, or things like focussing helicoids, not today…. This camera is fiddly because the original was, especially the Singapore manufactured units. At the end of Rollei the original company, there were inventories of unsold cameras. In the US, one particular dealer did a cash deal with the distributor and took Everything. In 1983 you could buy a chrome 35se for $129.95 but the price was artificially low because of the viability of the Manufactures. I believe the NY discount price of a 35TE (40mm. 4 element tessar lens ) was 299.95 and the 35SE was $379,95 before Rollei was liquidated. To give you perspective I bought my first F3hp New with a USA warranty for the same price.

The results seem mostly pretty good, except for some flares. Entirely the wrong camera for me, however. I tend to shoot a lot at minimum focus distance, and this is really awkward for that. I don’t really enjoy autofocus when I can’t tell what the camera is actually focusing on-I’d rather use zone. Controls look fiddly, which is true to the original, but I think that can be questioned. They weren’t forced to reproduce a Rollei35, and could have decided on just taking inspiration from that era of cameras. The fact that the ergonomics are the same as an old camera is theoretically interesting, but practically speaking anyone using the camera has to evaluate whether they enjoy the ergos of the camera in hand. I just don’t think I’d enjoy. If someone else doesn’t mind, I’m happy for them. There’s just a lot of quirks to this Mint Rollei, and I don’t think I’d want to put up with them. I don’t think the price is necessarily unfair, but $800 still a lot of money, and there are sorta-kinda alternatives. Comparing to the 17, the specs are nicer, some of the usability looks more awkward on the Rollei, but the alternative options are deeper at the higher price point.

Would be fair to mention that by f11, most probably, you start getting less sharpness in the image because the diffraction of light starts to be visible on the film. f16 I am quite certain, so maybe just use the term "depth of field" instead of "sharpness" in those instances :)

During the f2.8 vs f8.0 sharpness comparison the camera clearly focused on his chest/shoulders rather than his face. You can see this because his hat brim is sharpest around his ears. I think f8 looks so much sharper here just because of the greater depth of field reaching further to his face. Makes me wonder how easy it is to actually get what you want in focus with this LIDAR, would focus and recompose have helped here? Maybe it was because the minimum focus distance was being pushed up against?
@ribsy
7 күн бұрын
I think you may be right about potentially having slightly missed focus at 2.8. However the improvement at f8 is more than depth of field. There is a meaningful change in sharpness. You can see it if you compare the f4 to f5,6, or even f8. It’s also evident in the landscape style shots. 2.8 is the least sharp - that’s normal

The comment that it’s not a one handed camera is sort of silly. I don’t know of any film camera that meant to be used with one hand only. Ita a real Millennial, I phone user comment. I owned an original Rollei 35 a couple of years back. I sold it because it was too small but I did use it one handed from time to time; not to difficult for my chunky hands.

The point is that this camera is very light and awkward to hold, so any one handed use might be tough. Many street photographers use a one handed technique, so it’s worth mentioning. A lot of rollei 35 people getting offended. Chill

Would love one due to the auto-focus and small pocketable size however the price is unjustifiable, its just too expensive for what it is! If the price range was around the 300-350 range then without a doubt it would go on the to buy list. Bro is complaining about a legendary Rollei 35. It’s not a new design, it’s not a “retro” design. It’s exactly like a Rollei 35. It’s clear you never used one in your life. They went too hard trying to focus on the form than function. Rollei 35 was something else and trying to fit a AF point and shoot creates all these design constraint making for this fiddle form. Could have gone for a simple Olympus Mu1 or contax t2 like much simple form which would have fit this body better. But still great to have a new premium point and shoot film camera

My 1st stop would be grip hunting for a generic tripod socket attached grip to make this thing usable. It's a tough sell spending $800 for a camera that bakes into it the broken ergonomics of yesteryear. This could have been such a home run if they didn't go for this bizarre form factor. If this was shaped like a Pentax 17 or such, I'd be yelling "TAKE MY MONEY PLEASE". As far as the warranty and resilience of it, I think it's far too early to weigh in on. Literally every review has called out that it feels fragile and the mechanics feel... not robust. I think it's FAR too early to refer to this camera as "reliable". I think if it is still being made in 2 years I would entertain buying one... maybe.
