Before any criticisms, I gotta say that every single improvement has been a home-run, this go-round. The game feels more polished with the sky and black-world effects; the "gameplay loop" is coming together with the will o' wisps and the color-radar features, providing more actual gameplay; and the polish with the pause menu rotating plus slow-motion effect, and the white outline on the color "spotlight" only appearing on the ground? a stroke of genius. Looks brill. So now for a couple suggestions: 1. I almost feel like the color-radar effect may SLIGHTLY be spoiling the reveal of the landscape, at least the very first time you activate the runes that ignite the landscape permanently. At first I was thinking you could tone down the color-radar, but now that I think about it, the only time the player is actually going to be _surprised_ is the very first time he restores color, so perhaps don't give the player the color-radar until after the first rune activation, so as not to spoil the surprise. On the other hand, maybe getting a little taste of it right from the beginning would just make the rune activation even more satisfying. Worth considering, I reckon. 2. The wisps, I'm sure, are just temporary regarding their movement, but they are quite stiff right now. They should be much more flitty and, well, wispy. They're not really satisfying to watch at the moment. That's really not a priority this early in development, but might be worth putting on a list somewhere under the "polish" header. XD 3. I think when the torch replies to the piano note, it doesn't sound nearly as hopeful or nice as it seems like it should. Maybe bringing it up another octave in response, or maybe even it replies with a chord instead of a single note, which would really stress the hopefulness of the response. You run around pinging a single, somber key for five minutes, then suddenly you get a beautiful major chord in response, accompanied by a blossoming of light! 4. On the torch, it'd be great if, when the light shrank away and the flame dissipated, a little burst of fire finalized the dissipation of color, followed by a puff of smoke. A "fwoom!" kind of sound effect would also sound, which is just one of those polish things that makes the whole game feel way more fun and satisfying to play. I guess this is just "juice," as it were, and another thing that can really wait until the end of the game. Lastly, I just want to remind you that, if you can think of the main gameplay loop, like what the actual _gameplay_ is gonna be, then it's recommended that you focus on that as much as possible. Most of the stuff in this video, while I very much enjoyed watching it, was just polish and little ideas and such, but only _one_ mechanic was critical to the actual progression of gameplay. I don't know your workflow or what you have planned, so please take this as just me trying to keep you on track: Don't forget to focus on the main gameplay features as soon as possible, and leave all the polish for later. Great work and really excited to see where this goes next!

Really appreciate this, some great points all around! For #1 I was worried about this too but so far I think it's worth the tradeoff. I could also reduce the saturation a little so it's not a full reveal.. that might be a good balance. #2 they need to have their animations redone, I completely agree with you here #3 noted! Music is not my strong suit so appreciate this detailed feedback, I'll play with that for sure. #4 in addition to this, I'm also considering how the player will know it's there in the first place. It's a little too hidden right now, so I'm considering adding embers to the unlit torch, and perhaps a light crackling sound. I'll need to play with it and figure out how hidden I want them to be though. Again, really appreciate this detailed feedback, it's a huge help!

I think that to your first point, maybe the answer is that the color restoration is a consumable that restores over time. Like Mana. That way, it has the added bonus that if any enemies are ever added to the game, these can be enemies that hide in the dark (repealed by the color). And therefore having enough mana when entering a dangerous area would be crucial. p.s. this game looks absolutely stunning

@@christophermartinez8597 I'm hoping there are no enemies, or if there are, they don't work in a typical "they attack you and you die" fashion. Although he has mentioned stealth elements, I'm really hoping he takes this in a non-fighting, non-running-from-enemies direction.

@@kylebanks Perhaps the bark could have a muffled characteristic, much like how things sound when a person is under water. The idea of sound being represented differently from the colored world could add some depth and perhaps even a new mechanic in the game, where players would need to unlock sound as well. I can imagine unlocking a colored world and seeing birds and animals around, but it being incomplete silent, as the sounds of nature are still missing. Not suggesting this for all areas, but perhaps in certain instances. I’m super excited to see your game develop!

I'm loving all the new stuff that's getting added! The game looks amazing so far :) My only suggestion is to work on the call and response between the player and the torches with the piano. Those chords sound really dissonant together, and don't really help the effect of sounding 'hopeful.' A single note on its own sounds dissonant enough for the down-trodden affect, and having like a 5th play from the torch would sound nice :D Otherwise, amazing work dude! What I thought first, when you showed the ping w/o sound, was that the dog was barking or something in that direction. I thought a 'resonating' (is that the correct term 😅) bark would fit in pretty well with the ping. Although I get the vibe you're going for. Truly, truly amazing work!

Yeah that's a nice idea, the only issue is that barking serves another purpose so it may end up being a little confusing. What I went with was an idea my wife actually had which is to make the dog's tail wag, so his upbeat spirits are uplifting to the girl, restoring color

Two things though : 1- Clouds are just a tiny bit too bright .. 2- Your idea of Color pings making a sound and it's feedback are very good , but i think those piano notes don't match the background music very well .. you might want to change the sound to something like a bell sound , Guitar or similar .. something dead and UnColored .. You're doing a great job! One suggestion i want to make is about the sound it makes when revealing color for a short time. I know you feel proud of it and probably rehearsed a few sounds, but it doesn't seem to blend with the atmosphere. Everything is dark and mysterious and you've adapted that making the piano sound dark, but the sound itself feels...out of place. It hits you when you listen to it, and not necessarily in a good way, you kinda get bored of it. Maybe try to make it a water drop/space-ish/resonating kind of sound, but much different adding depth to it, probably layering different "heavy" sounds and adding just a little spark in it, and when you light the torch you get more of that spark and the same sounds but happier, just as you did here in the video. Also adding slight variations to the sound for temporary colour would make it interesting since the player will be listening to it a lot. I hope this made sense in some way and i was clear enough. I wish you the best!

Hey! Just watched all of your videos on the development of this game and I have to say that you are doing what I wish a lot more game developers were doing: making something visually striking and interactive that tells a deep story, and is super approachable even if you've never picked up a video game before. Projects like these really highlight the role of video games as a legitimate narrative form, with an unmatched ability to engage and tell a story to an audience. It inspires me to pursue game design for similar reasons, so I have to thank you for this incredible work. I may be late to the party in terms of being able to give viable feedback, but I have two suggestions: 1) This is a game that can and should have high replay value. However, I've noticed that replaying games can feel tedious when control is taken away from the player frequently. Is it at all possible to make the color spreading effect happen outside of a cutscene? At least beyond the first few times? And maybe could the memories be more interactive, like you can control the birds flying around with the usual camera control joystick/mouse? It would be nice to still feel like you're responsible for bringing joy to the woman even when you're not playing directly as the dog. 2) Love the new sky effects. On the topic of memories still, do you think there's any way that they could appear as "constellations" in the sky of the colorless world? Then as the game progresses, you have more and more good memories that occupy even the darker world to make it feel less heavy. No matter what you end up doing, I've been so impressed so far by what you've done and I'm certain it will be amazing. I'll be subbed to see where you end up taking it!
@kylebanks
3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks so much for the thoughtful comment and suggestions! You're definitely right about the way control being taken away hurts replayability. I'll have to consider how that can be improved without sacrificing those nice shots because I feel they do add a lot to the game. Making the memories more interactive is an interesting idea as well... I'm not sure how I could do it without every memory having a whole bunch of custom logic/controls, but maybe there's something I can do to make it consistent enough that the player already knows what to do when the memory starts.

I like the lantern temporary colour reveals. If you wanted to make the game more difficult, you could limit the number of times the lanterns can be used by having the player 'spend' Will-o-the-Wisps to light the lanterns. So the player doesn't feel like collecting the wisps is a compulsory grind, you could have more wisps than is needed in each level, but collecting them is rewarded by having more time to keep lanterns lit. The new effects look great.
@kylebanks

Oh I like that idea, a great way to tie the wisps more into the game and not simply as collectables!

Looking really cool man! One thing I would suggest tho, is switching the color of the Red/Yellow tree slightly. Because a lot of people (including me lol) use that asset pack for trees because it's awesome. However, if you change the color slightly, it will make it more unique, especially if it's a main part in your artwork. Stunning work! Music-wise, I love the idea for the notes upon ping, but perhaps go for a more subtle sound design, because now it takes me a little bit away from the story. You're story and world is very magical and a piano is not that magical haha, if that makes sense.
@kylebanks
3 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah those trees are great but every Unity dev seems to use them. I've got work on my backlog to replace and/or modify them for that exact reason, but they really are just so pretty. The piano definitely stands out too much, totally agree. I'm going to be tweaking that a lot but wanted to show off more the core idea of how the audio will play into the mechanic.

Looking good. The major chord for the lamps is indeed a nice touch but, if you'll excuse my boldness, leaving in the original flare chord makes it such a stark cadence that it somewhat undermines the subtlety of the rest of the game aesthetic, especially if it's going to be so oft repeated. How about pre-computing lamp collisions (e.g. maintain a constant spherical trigger collider so you always know when a lamp is in range) when the player triggers the flare and suppressing the minor chord if a lamp is present? If the delayed timing is then off-putting, you might also try a swelling sound rather than a hard piano chord - either pad, strings, winds, or keeping it piano and just arpeggiating the chords with the emphasis landing on the appearance of the lamp (or starting on keypress and dwindling away with the expanding flare if there is no lamp present).

Im loving the way it looks so far! I was thinking that if you want to be very ambitious, you should include vertically dynamic music that is activated by the color, scene, and more. Very similar to Nier Automata. Theres a video on youtube that explains it a lot better: "The Dynamic Music of NieR: Automata (Game Music Discussion)" by Jake Butineau. I hope you consider this. It would transform the entire interaction with the world

I think it would be cool if the sounds the temporary color restoration makes when interacting positively with another object would be great if it harmonized with the object.

I think it would be nice to distort the edge of the color spread a little bit (e.g. with turbulent noise) to make it feel more dynamic.

first of all the game looks amazing!!! second is you should try to harmonize the sounds a bit more i think itll be more satisfying and will just give the game a bit more relaxing tone and also maybe the lantern can just reply to you with the same sound in like an echoing kind of way

@@kylebanks :D I really love watching other's declogs especially Games like these. I was so shocked by the aesthetic graphics in your game, and how much the game satisfies someone when you bring color to the world. It really makes us feel like we're the reason it got life. And these also motivates me to work on my own game. Looking forward to more of these, and good luck! :)

You have cool stuff this game is like a HUE in 3D. It is cool to relax. That being said don't forget to make the game, you got a lot of cool stuff just need to put together. I would say you have enough mechanics for a full game. The basic 3 C's look well done, art looks nice, you have sounds, mechanics.. All the good stuff. I don't know how long you plan on the dev but think about the polishing part after you have the full game. Make idk... 3 levels and see how it goes. If you think it is missing something, try to create but if it is too much.... maybe it is better to leave on the side. If you like (won't be perfect) do the full game. Use the feedback and add what you need to add, and then you start polishing things. Btw... Don't forget the tutorial. You got good stuff, good job. Keep the good work.

Thanks for the feedback Flavio, you're absolutely right on that. I definitely fall guilty of doing a lot of re-work from having polished too early and changing/scrapping things later.

@kylebanks

I'm thinking I might be able to just have the white lines for all surfaces that are pointing up or horizontally, but disable it for surfaces pointing down (overhangs, caves, etc). That might be a good way to reduce the amount of visual clutter while keeping the striking visual

Definitely love the game but can’t help notice when the dogs slows down the walking animation stops and he kind of slides for a sec maybe the implementation of how he would go from a run to a trot then idle might help the character look a little less slidy but other then that great work can’t wait to play the game!!!

I got a idea. Every time you active a lantern or a rune this white line create quickly, it’s a bit hard to explain but imagine activating the rune, currently the circle is just there but it might look better if it starts as a dot that goes around the rune and when the dot has gotten all around the circle expands, now it doesn’t has to be slow it could be really quick, so it might just be like a 40 mili second difference, it would look interesting but idk if you understand
@kylebanks

I think I get what you're saying, that would definitely be an interesting visual and I agree that there's something missing there. I did get rid of the runes, now there's a campfire, but I still think there's something that can be done here. Nice idea!

make the white outline rainbow when coloring in the world. brings contrast to the difference between being in color mode and restoring color to the world. When i think of color restoration i think rainbow ROY G BIV (RGB)
@kylebanks

Thanks for the suggestion! I've found that doing too much with the outline makes the visuals quite noisey, and actually more distracting than anything, but I can give it a try and see how it goes

you could have the sound when you 'ping' colour change depending on whats nearby

I want to do more with that, I mentioned fireflies but I have this imagine in my head of fireflies almost singing back to you when pinged
@aydam3558
3 жыл бұрын
@@kylebanks I think you should have the dog barking when performing this ping, just like you have it done for the human to interact with stuff. With that, you could possibly implement some changes to the human behaviour. You could do so that the girl is minding her business with a neutral state (so walking around by her self in short distances, sitting down on the ground and doing some activities, etc.). Whenever you as the dog go too far out of the girls range, she would then start following you again. So you could do some checks for the range, which would create a more realistic feel to the gameplay, instead of having that typical RPG feel where a pet would be just constantly following you. Other than that, great progress, keep it up! ;)

I feel like it would be great if the temporary color restoration would be faded. Like it would be a the color multiplied by 0.75, or so. This way it can be visible if you that "color ping" in temporarily restored areas as well.

What do you think about adding more colours to the dark part of the world? More purple, pink (some abstract colors) maybe some glowing. The game would become more intresting event if you dont see colorful part of the game. what's more you can add some collectable items which could glow by this colorful aura. Not only collectable items could emit this aura. What about purple trees? pink water? blue rocks? Or try the other way to remaking the world. Gray color would better represent the sadness of the world. some more fog. It is just a suggestion so think about it :D I also suggest you do more powerful moves of camera when zooming in and out (maybe more aggressive)

Thanks for the suggestions! The idea is that the islands will have different themes, and with this will come more variety in the pallete of the uncolored world. Right now I've been so focused on the early demo content that this hasn't been clear, but eventually there will be much more variety

I think the discordant piano idea and replying thing is honestly wonderful. Not convinced by the actual sound though. Think something less....real would work better. Like a drone-y pulse similar to the music in the game. Also, the sound could increase in volume as the colour goes out and decrease when the fire colour comes back in
