What are your thoughts on the Quansheng desktop chargers? They get insanely hot and emit a burning smell and i have opened one of mine and the mains power cable is just 0.5mm and looks to be copper clad aluminium to really make that ultra thin wire even more dodgy. I need to re open one of mine and run it to find out what exactly is getting hot, i may modify it to use a different charge circuit with a external dc power supply feeding it, i really dont trust my home to these chargers!

I just don’t understand the obsession with USB-C charging… I can carry a spare battery, or I can carry a cable, wall wart, battery bank, etc. I simply grab a spare. Also, for those who say ‘you can charge via USB while using,’ have you actually tried this? I have, and the power conversion inside the radio causes enough RF to kill your reception. YMMV, but I am fine with no USB-C.

I just did the USB-C replacement on my IC-705, don’t care about charging via this port as it is still limited to 5v. I always charge the radio via the dedicated 12v port. Just because a device has a USB-C port doesn’t mean it supports PD (power delivery).

A word of caution here with the USB-C version which I own: manual states it's not recommended to use its USB to charge, just in an emergency which makes me think there is a risk of overcharge of the battery which could be damaged. To handle with care and give some charge in case the cradle isn't at hand.

Nice video. Thanks for the comparison. One other minor difference that I can see is that on the original UV-K5, as well as the UV-K6, is that there is a small hole below and to the right of the speaker grill, presumably the opening for the microphone. I don't see the same on the UV-5R Plus in the video. Are they perhaps using the speaker as the microphone, as they used to do on the old-style 27 MHz CB walkie-talkies? I have purchased two replacement speakers for these but haven’t had time to change them out. It IS very easy! I also watched a Russian electrical engineer do a resistor/ capacitor change on the board for a richer sound and it did make a difference! Not super hard to do but you need a steady hand. If you want any of that info I can send it to you if you have an email address you can give! Thanx again mate!!!!

My friend's friend said this is an illegal radio (we are in Canada). I did find it listed in ISED, so it's got an approval. But still illegal? (We're all licensed hams here.). So I can only think it's the harmonics that makes it illegal. But then it's listed...
@HamRadioDX
9 ай бұрын
I can’t speak for Canada as I am unsure of the exact regulations. But in most places it’s perfectly legal to receive. In Australia it’s legal to operate as a ham as it meets the spurious emission guidelines (well the K5 does)

Great marketing tactic and you also get a heaps better radio.😊 Question... would a 30dB attenuator be enough? Maybe use the built in attenuator in the VNA? I have the same VNA but just bought a 30dB attenuator. TIA 🍻🤠
@HamRadioDX
9 ай бұрын
30dB wouldn’t be enough as the TinySA only accepts a MAX signal input of 6dBm (IIRC). 5W is 37dBm so that doesn’t leave a lot of headroom - thus why 40dB is better and safer

TIP: The big batt that comes with the 5r plus doesn't fit the k5 or k6. Just snip the little plastic piece off at the top of the battery and it'll fit the k5 amd and k6 just fine. And now you can use usb c with the big battery.
@W-733_KWX
8 ай бұрын
Just a word of caution: the K6 says USB-C charge ONLY for emergency, not sure why. And K6 battery is not a 2200mAh battery. There must be a reason the bigger battery has a plastic piece to prevent use with other models, and not just marketing. I am about to buy a 5r next to my k6 to mess about with, like with other FW and use mobile with the battery eliminator (an other option here), and if I ever snip de plastic piece, it will be to be able to use it on the k6 in case, but nothing else. Also, the k6 original FW handles (shows) battery discharge according to the original battery but not the bigger one, however if I am well informed, a FW as egzumer allows the choice of the type of battery.

All these Chinese radios come with charging cradles, and they are all slightly different despite the same output voltage. Same for the batteries: all same specs but all incompatible designs. So w/o USB-C you need to keep around one big cradle per model and you can‘t use batteries interchangeably between models which is absolutely insane the moment you think about using these radios when SHTF or portable on a hike. End of line: just no radio w/o USB-C anymore. Period.
