As somebody who works with history and archeology channels on Mesoamerica (Aztec, Maya, etc), I wanted to give my thoughts on the symbolism shown off, since I've seen people liken Zonai ruins and iconography to Mesoamerican art, which I agree with: The "swirl/spiral" shape you see on the cheeks of the Dragon in the BOTW 2 logo, in the Zonai sculptures in BOTW1, etc IS something you see in some Mesoamerican depictions of serpents, such as on the sculptures on the Temple of the Feathered Serpent at Teotihuacan, or on some of the Serpent sculptures at the ruins of the Aztec Templo Mayor. The latter in particular is almost identical to some of the Zonai BOTW1 sculptures, and I am pretty confident that's what some of them were based on. Furthermore, As I understand it, "Swirls" and "spirals" are a key motif to Zonai stuff in BOTW, and these are common in Mesoamerican art, too: The Mesoamerican step fret for example has a stair step pattern which ends in a geometric spiral/coil, which is sometimes used on it's own, too. Speech, singing, sound, wind, etc is also shown in Mesoamerican art as spiral gusts or tufts, called speech scrolls. This, in turn, had connections to the spiral design of a cross section of conch shells, which likewise were used to produce sound and blow air. Sometimes it's shown as winding and flowing streams or tendrils, too, such as seen in most "smoking mirror" glyphs in Aztec art, and in Maya art that sort of design is seen commonly too, such as with the Vision serpent. Conch shell cross sections were a major emblem of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec version of the Feathered Serpent diety: Feathered serpents generally represent the dualism of the heavens and earth (hence avian and serpent aspects), or the boundaries/crossing between realms, but to the Aztec also represented learning, music, poetry, and high culture, and his aspect Ehecatl, the god of wind (again, tying into speech scrolls). This spiral motif and the step fret also has ties to representations of serpents, water, and many other things. Could it tie into cycles of time, which is a major theme in the Zelda series and is (as I understand it) what most people think the Zonai spirals and the Ouroboros of the logo represents? Maybe: The relationship between the Mesoamerican step fret and cosmic cycles is something I see mentioned in more sketchy sources then reliable academic ones, but certainly cosmic cycles is a major theme in Mesoamerican theology and philosophy: In most Mesoamerican creation myths the world and it's people are cyclically created and destroyed. Time and calendrical systems were also viewed as repeating cycles (not just in the same way we have months and years, though the nuances of this could be it's own giant comment), and to tie into what is said at 7:19, life and death in Mesoamerican philosophy were viewed as a pair of complementary, cyclical concepts, such as with the gods sacrificing themselves to recreate the world, humans needing to sacrifice in turn to continue the cosmic cycle (people are likened to maize, feeding the gods, as people need to eat and consume to live too). However, while serpents, cycles, and spirals are all major Mesoamerican icongraphic motifs, Ouroboros's are not. So that is either an invention on the part of the devs (though one which certainly fits with Mesoamerican symbolism), or was taken from Eurasian symbolism. Boars, per what is said at 9:17, also aren't a big thing in Mesoamerica: Technically peccaries are there, but they don't have a major role in Mesoamerican art. But owls do, and Zonai owl statues do resemble some depictions of Owls in Mesoamerican art: Such as the owl seen on the Piedras Negras Stela 9 or in Spearthrower Owl (either a general or a ruler from Teotihuacan, a major metropolis in the same area as but around 1000 years before the Aztec)'s name glyph. However, I question if some of the influence on Zonai art and what we see in BOTW2 with the murals and the golden arm thing and the logo might actually come from Bronze Age China: There is a LOT of artistic similarity between Bronze age Chinese art (as well as some Chinese art from later periods) and some stuff from Mesoamerica, to the point where there are psuedoarcheology theories that China actually had contact with Prehispanic Mexico (they didn't, it's just a coincidence). While sort of swirl, spiral, and meander and fret patterns are found in other world cultures, like Greece, the ones seen in Bronze age Chinese art can be VERY close to some Mesoamerican use of them, especially the thicker, more tendril like examples I mentioned, especially in Maya art. And just as much as the bird statues resemble Mesoamerican depictions of owls, they also remind me of patterns from Shang dyansty vessels... and to the face of the entity in the mural at 8:07. Boars/swine also play a much larger role in Chinese art. And the hooked shape frets on the serpents in the BOTW 2 logo (and the golden arm thing from the 2019 teaser) , if anything, resemble frets seen on some sculptures and vessels from the Shang and Zhou dynasties more then Mesoamerican frets... ...and In fact, that same motif is seen on the Fused Shadow in LOZ: Twilight Princess, which is confirmed by the developers to have been inspired by Shang dynasty art; and as you and other zelda theorists have noted, there are aspects of the Logo and other things we've seen for BOTW2 and even 1 that are evocative of Twili designs. I'm not a big Zelda lore guy (and still need to play BOTW1, actually0, so I don't have insights into the implications of that, though. The mastersword also has "branches" coming off of it, which I know there is a historical example of from from Japan, though the sword itself has Chinese writing on it, though it's from quite a bit later then the Zhou or Shang dynasties. I think there's also a branched sword in BOTW 1? I will also say that while the Serpent/dragon heads in most depictions do resemble Mesoamerican serpent depictions, with some of the BOTW1 statues being almost identical to the Aztec Templo Mayor serpent sculptures, the flamethrower weapon in the shape of a dragon head from the trailer from last year also looks more Chinese to me, due to what I think are fluffy looking eyebrows and the shape of some of the teeth. But China isn't the area of history/archeology i'm informed on, and I think it might just be the video compression messing with me, especially since the people I know who actually do specialize in Chinese art say they don't think it's that close to art of Chinese dragons or serpents. It's also, of course, possible that BOTH Mesoamerica and Bronze age China is an influence here, and one or the other is simply more prevalent depending on the specific model and texture in question. But I do think at least one or the other was one of the main influences. If that means that the actual symbolism of art from those cultures matches the intended symbolism in game is harder to tell: Maybe the symbolism of cycles in Mesoamerican cosmology, and the way spirals can play into that and sound/wind was a good fit for Zelda's themes of cycles, music, time, and "breath" of breath of the wild. Or maybe it's just a coincidence and the devs just wanted something that looked ancient!

The Zonai architecture is very much inspired by old Mesoamerican civilizations, and the feathered dragon sculptures could be a nod to Quetzelcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent god of the air. oh I am SO glad you brought up the figure being the Zonai interpretation of Hylia! that was honestly my first thought (after "...why does this person look so much like that horse great fairy" lmao) with how the Zonai ruins all focus on animals, and the idea that the one buried pig one surrounded by 7 statues is representing Ganon's fall to the sages, they absolutely represent deities as animals and with this being their ruins, it absolutely tracks that they would depict Hylia differently than Hylians. I'm so glad I'm not the only one flying this flag and that it's getting more attention. so many people overlook the idea that the same thing can be viewed differently by different groups and that's such a shame bc I really think we're onto something there.

Also worth noting that the scene where the water droplet reverses back up in the E3 2021 trailer is similar to how Link reverses fall of the chunk of rock and rides it in the September Direct 2022 trailer. Another thing I want to point out: While you're right that it IS generally just one serpent, there's an example of the Ourobouros in media with TWO serpents biting EACH OTHER'S tails: AURYN, in 'The Neverending Story'. In the book, AURYN (yes, the all-capitals writing of "AURYN" is original to Michael Ende's book; I'm not doing that for the sake of emphasis) is depicted as a mere oval shape with writing on the back: 'Do what you wish'. In the film adaptations (and I can only speak for the first two, as those are the only ones I've seen), it's shown as the serpents being intertwined in an almost Celtic-knotwork pattern, but still biting each other's tails. Probably NOT an influence on this game, but I thought I'd mention it.

I really do love your vids NBC. Another great analysis! I have a theory about the moblin/bokoblin horns. I think in the ancient war, Ganon created the creatures to fight. They've got large horns because they are weapons/threatening display (perhaps even better intellect). Once Ganon was sealed and the war ended, any remaining moblin/bokoblin were left. They bred, and because they weren't fighting a war, the need for weapons/display (intelligence?) became unwarranted. Their horns become smaller and less threatening (stupider?) as we see in BOTW.

Also, another thing to consider is that the Triforce didn't seem to play a role in Breath of the Wild. Could it be that the Zonai had it? Since the animals represented it's three powers? I had come to the idea that the tear in the Sheikah symbol represented knowledge, and the beauty and tragedy that comes with it. The knowledge is gained when one is vigilant (open eye/mind) and blessed by the Goddesses (triforce above all). Hence why the drop onto the Sheikah slate is literally knowledge (data). The inversion of the symbol for the Yiga Clan can represent something as simple as a rebellion from the Sheikah, or an inversion of their principles. The inversion/corruption of the Sheikah way might translate to: Through aquiring knowledge (by any means) it will open our eyes/minds to power. Hense why they seem generally dim witted, but take part in actions such as theft and spying.

I'm glad someone mentioned the triangles on the shield, I feel like that was under the radar for awhile. Between that and the triangles cut out of the clothes "old link" is wearing in the trailers- that pattern showing up multiple times can't be a confidence. In addition to the triangles, toss in that the original Zelda had a triforce in 8 segments, the vessel link holds has 8 slots (maybe he starts with one and needs to collect 7?) a Ganon return makes triforce lore make sense, and what is potentially depictions of an ancient war and hylia.. it seems really likely it might make a comeback here. Interesting that the wielder of the triforce often has it on their hands, and the figure that is the color assigned to courage in these games basically gives link it's arm...

If we're talking symbolism I want to talk about the dragons on the stone door. They're connected, maybe even a single two-headed dragon before Link throws the door open, dividing them. Now this isn't in-game symbolism but I feel it was put there for a reason. It almost feels like these two symbiotic dragons were divided, either voluntarily or forcefully. But in the end, in the logo, they come back together by choice to form a unity, a balance, once more. I may be reading into it too much but I feel like this could be talking about the Zonai "returning" Hyrule in some way? You know, Farosh and Naydra joining forces... Or their deity reforming a unity with Hylia?

This is my own personal theory for the title and the dungeons (that I hope we get) The little vials (maybe the tears) could be collected after every dungeon, THEN they could be used as the magical powers for abilities. Like the time reversal one we saw. Just like how at the end of each divine beast you get a new champions ability. But I think these might be closer to traditional items or shiekah runes. Actually this would make a lot of sense, since the only way you get the runes in the game is to have droplets or "tears" to fall and hit the tablet. HMMMM

I feel i should weigh in on this. BOTW and its upcoming sequel seem to be a mashup of Zelda references from all 3 timelines in the split after Ocarina of time, we have the Rito and the Zora as prime examples as the Rito were said to have once been Zora and are never seen in the same game together until BOTW. The Owl depictions, while not super obvious have been used before in Zelda history, In Twilight Princess, owl statues were made by the Oocca a race of sky peoples who lived in the heavens, hmm sounds familiar. Coincidentally, Dragons were also featured on that Sky island in Twilight princess as well though not in the same light. It's interesting you touched on the fact there are two dragons biting each others tails rather than the ouroboros a serpent eating it's own tail. The twin dragons biting each others tails from what i read symbolizes Yin & Yang or good vs Evil, it also could represent love that never dies, as well as in chinese symbolism there are celestial dragons protectors of the gods and heavens and earth dragons which rule the earth. All of these seem to fit with the story we see thus far so it seems like perfect symbolism.

A youtuber brought this detail up and it blew my mind so i'd like to share it here. The figure that might be wearing a mask, in the mural......the "mask" part on their face looks a LOT like the dragons we see in breath of the wild. They pointed out how the ears on the figure look very similar to the floppy horn/ear things on the dragons. Also their eyes have the same triangle patterns around them. Something else the youtuber didn't mention though that i noticed, is that the "hair" on the figure looks EXACTLY like the scales/hair that's going down the dragon's back. With all of this in mind this being has to either be a depiction of a dragon (maybe an artistic version of them or maybe a human form they take,) OOORRRR if it's a "mask" this being is wearing than it's a dragon mask. Maybe they hunted a dragon and made a mask out of it's remains? o: Or maybe they just worship the dragons and made a mask to represent them out of respect. Also something I noticed when I first saw the trailer that i see NO ONE mentioning......the design on the figures face/mask instantly reminded me of Majora's Mask. I think there's a bigger connection than people are seeing. I think it's also useful to mention that the manga for majora's mask, even though it's not cannon, gave Majora an origin story and in it Majora was a dragon. Maybe they're drawing inspiration from that o: Idk but the connections are too similar to not mention.

Hebra, Lanayru, Necluda, Faron, Eldin, Akkala and central Hyrule, those could be the seven tears but you never know.

maybe like the ouroboros logo the beginning and end are meeting in some kind of temporal convergence, now that I think about it that mural of Zelda with what I think is Hylia could be Hylia meeting her self and maybe merging to create a new more powerful entity?

I think the 8th Herione actually might mean something for the sequel. The writing on them is upside down and it looks a *lot* like the Zonai writing in the first TotK trailer.

I may not always agree, but I do typically enjoy your videos. I'm not convinced it's Hylia, nor do I subscribe much to my recent theory of it being a Minish. It does bear some resemblance to them, and the Picori/Minish did come from the sky.

What if that clip of link climbing the tree root was either part of the lost woods or something similar to the trial of the sword. What I’m going off of is that the environment is hazy and has that bluish tint with particles in the air, like the lost woods without the fog. The other thing is that the clip looks almost as if it was taken in a room with outdoor elements on the inside like the trials. The biggest part I want to point out though is the new thing on links hip is not present in it. The capsule thing is likely not connected to the tears shown around what I think is hylia in the carving because there are 8 slots and 7 tears, therefore showing it might instead be energy capsules for links new arm’s abilities. His capsules not being present there could mean 1 of 2 things and that is either he just obtains it later, or it was taken away before he entered the area, similar to how champions abilities cannot be used in shrines or the trial of the sword. Another detail I noticed while I was typing this was that link is climbing up the side instead of using his arm to clip through or his reverse stasis ability which would both be much mor efficient. Sooooooo…. Yea what do u think about it?

So, a double ouroboros is a distinct symbol from a regular one. It's also not a modern invention because they appeared throughout history (more rarely though). But I don't know if it had a special meaning compared to the single one. All I ever heard about it is that it maybe represented the idea of volatility in alchemy. So, maybe it's not about balance, but rather a cycle that is unstable and could break (as in two snakes racing to consume each other before the other consumes them).

I haven't been able to watch this full video. However, I'm playing through twilight princess and I noticed that when the light spirits appear, they start with a reverse water drop/tear drop. It looks a lot like the green reverse tear drop in the trailer for tears of the Kingdom. Throwing it out there!

Has anyone else noticed the mysterious figure surrounded by the tears in the mural seemingly has head of a blupee/the Lord of the mountain?

I still hope the Mystery Figure is an Ancient Oocca, i.e. a tall version of the weird Human-Headed bird things from Twilight Princess.

If it’s going to have more content about the various animals, and the main symbol seems to be two dragons, which is supposed to represent courage... maybe it’s going to be focused on how the hero became able to reincarnate? I mean we know the royal line has the blood of the goddess, and we know Ganon is sort of like the most badass reincarnation of malice that refuses to die... but what about Link? Maybe there will be two Links in this game and they do something magical that creates the cycle, so that there’s always a hero who can and will rise when needed?

U know that video u did in 2018 regarding how the tetraforce doesn’t physically exist but the empty spot has symbolism? I noticed an upside down triangle on the mystery figure’s dress from the newest trailer. Ik ur rly good with symbolism and so I thought I’d mention it!

I think those things on Link's belt are energy sources like batteries, maybe the golem we saw in the second trailer will be a weapon or a power armor Link can ride in so he needs an ancient battery pack to power it up.

The 7 tears could also have something to do with the 7 peoples. Hylians, Gorons, Zoras, Gerudos, Rito, Sheikah and of course the Zonai

While it's true that the Zelda team didn't originally plan to make a sequel, I bet they already had the lore for the Sky, the Tears and the Zonai written down before Botw, probably for DLC.

I actually think that the figure on the mural is farosh because the zonai lived in the Faron region were the spring of courage is. I also think it's them because of the theme of the game with the colour green being symbolised with the zonai and courage(power:red and wisdom:blue)
