Apologies for any audio troubles, I recorded this in several parts with my microphone seemingly fiddling with the settings each time so some parts might sound different. A few slight corrections: Wyatt's rebellion was in 1554 (I accidentally wrote down 1553 and didn't notice until today), and Roger Ascham was the guy I meant, Not Aylmer. This was probably the quickest I have scripted, recorded and edited a video of this length for a long time!

I'm so sick of Mary I being portrayed badly. Say what you will about Becoming Elizabeth and The Tudors, I thought both actresses gave a nuanced and sympathetic view of Mary. Becoming Elizabeth's Mary you saw her resolve and intelligence. Personally, I'd like to see a whole series dedicated to her, I think she deserves it. I mean Allison Weir just wrote another Queens book about her, the time is ripe.

If I’m remembering my Tudor history correctly, Jane proved to not be the puppet that the Dudley family wanted. I believe she even stated that she was not going to share power with her husband. So basically, they took a fairly strong historical woman pretended she was a damsel so they could remake her into a modern woman. So this is more than just changing the story. They changed who she was to begin with, so she could fit a fake narrative that she was a damsel, so whoever wrote this could rescue her and make her a girl boss! Is that where we’re going with us? It’s time like this. I’m glad I don’t have the time to watch a lot of TV.

It's not meant to be a historical drama, it's a fantasy thing, with magic and stuff. I think it's based on a young adult novel that yes, does use some real historical characters, but don't expect any resemblance with history. And yes, real life Queen Jane wasn't a puppet, she realized that was the plan and she said no to that... and then he ran off to his mummy (no joke, he went crying to his mom because his wife was a meanie) and his mother made a scene. Jane still didn't budge and told them no, saying she would make her husband a duke, but not king. I think she would have become a great ruler if she had the chance to stay longer in power. She seems to me to have been 2 in 1 (if Mary and Elizabeth merged into a single person), with Mary's strength of faith and Elizabeth's intelligence and unwillingness to be treated like a pawn. And I think the Dudleys would have been put in their place even if their plan had worked to avoid Mary winning. Fact is no one liked them: not Mary and not Jane.

As a gay person myself, I have no clue why they want to make a historically heterosexual individual into a queer character. Like, why not do a show about an actual gay monarch? Like Edward II? Adding onto this, there are MANY historical characters who are POC, and you could make a show about them, yet they decide to do raceblind casting in this show for the sake of getting publicity. It's getting ridiculous.

I've read the book. It's YA fiction, a comedy done primarily for shit and giggles with a lot of wall-breaking and shape-shifters. It's a fun read if you're a certain audience, and no one is going to mistake it for history. There was much rejoicing among fan when news of the series came out. Some of said fans have now binged the episodes up, and there's a chunk which say Amazon screwed it up, losing much of the stuff which made the book work. So, I suspect no one's really going to be happy. (Should I mention the werewolves and Edward?)

Why is Edward VI black? His mother was Jane Seymour who was famously described as fair and blonde. That’s as white as you can get. Elizabeth was also white with red hair. Her mother Anne Boleyn was white with dark hair and dark eyes. Too many people think shows like this are historically accurate and will think that Edward VI of England, Elizabeth I of England, and Queen Charlotte of Strelitz-Mecklenburg were black. 🤦🏻♀️

I’m really glad you mentioned the head coverings for women. It’s a minor point, but it drives me to distraction. I don’t think is was until sometime after WWI that it was considered proper for a grown azz woman to go out in public without some kind of head covering, even if it was just a small cap. I also hate historical dramas that show a queen or noblewoman bopping around the castle or manor by herself. A queen was never unattended. Even if she was having “private moments” with the king, someone was always guarding the door, or asleep outside the chamber

I believe it became acceptable for a woman to go out without some kind of head covering in public was perhaps in the 1940s and 1950s-1960s,but many women still wore hats on,but it became acceptable especially post ww2 era for women to go without any kind of hat on.

It honestly feels pretty disgusting and victim-blaming to say someone was a "damsel" for dying and the way to "fix" her story is to re-write it so she didn't die. History is full of people who suffered horrible things and died tragic deaths, and you honor them by respecting the full story of who they were, including but not limited to the tragedy. Saying that being murdered makes you a lame damsel is a huge slap in the face and basically says nothing interesting or brave or accomplished you did while alive counts if you came to a tragic end.

So...to make a good parody/comedy you need to know what you are parodying in the first place. The people who made this have no clue, and that's why it all falls flat. Also, the real Jane was so much more interesting, complex and strong than the generic girlboss in this trailer. She was an immensely intelligent and educated young woman. While she was a pawn in the political machinations of her family, she was immensely astute for her age and had strong convictions of her own. If they wanted to do a modernised alt history version of her life, they could have done something like a fish out of water story, where a nerdy, bookish Jane is confronted with the real world. And her views about people and the way the world works is fundamentally challenged by people around her, who then help her find her true power as a political prodigy and queen. That would still be not historically accurate, but it would at least be more watchable than the garbage in the trailer.

I enjoyed the Gerry Anderson references and all the voice acting sections are great too - The John of Ulm clip gave me flashbacks of the diplomats of the HRE from Medieval II: Total War.

I watched a documentary about Jane Grey and a historian said the only thing historically accurate thing about that Delarouche painting was the straw on the floor. Which is slightly harsh, but not completely inaccurate. Bernedette Banner’s channel does a retrospective of costumes on historical dramas every year and there are a number of shows where the extras are historically accurate but the leads are dreadfully costumed. I think it’s based on what looks good, I look forward to this show being roasted come the end of the year. I honestly don’t care if Edward VI is played by a black man. I don’t care if it’s historically inaccurate, but it does bother me he’s an adult, it changes how his choices are framed. My half joking response to people who complain about race bent casting is to assume they don’t believe English people should ever be cast in MacBeth. (Someone did say this was fine as it was fiction 🤬). I honestly wouldn’t mind the Edward VI being gay but given what he was coughing up around that time I don’t think he should be kissing anyone. Also, he was so very Protestant, even if he was gay, he wouldn’t have acted on it. This reminds me a bit of Outlander, can we get a decent drama on the history before we start taking the piss.

The parallels between the Catholics and the Protestants vs normal people and animal shape shifters was phenomenal! It sounds silly as a premise but it was actually really well done. I was floored by how much I enjoyed it. You could see the historical influence on every page, despite the fact it was alt-history. This show, however, threw all that out the window. As an adaptation, this show is trash. And as far as historical accuracy? You will not find it here, don’t even bother looking. They should have just made a up a medieval fantasy world and told an original story.
