Winter in Monterey Bay brings some of its best conditions-well, at least in terms of visibility! With 2021's nonstop mega-swells and the early evening darkness, the underwater photographer must jump at any window in the forecast to get their gills wet. Check out the cool critters I saw on a calm night dive between the storms at the Monterey Breakwater this weekend!
Of Note:
Red octopuses have been common this year, especially at night. Whiskers the famous harbor seal is back after a long hiatus! Tritonia exulans nudibranch sea slugs are around and cruising the sea pen beds. Market squid are inshore and breeding! Moon jellies and salps represented the planktonic community very well. Many kelp holdfasts have been ripped out by the sell and are lumbering around the breakwater eddie. What a great night!
