I liked the show because Hank was one of the last positive male role models I actually looked up to on TV. He always tried to do the right thing, and usually admits his wrong doings. His son didn’t turn out to be the star football player, but he loves him anyways, and makes every attempt to find mutual interests. He’s honest with his son on many occasions, even when it’s comes off as mean or unsupportive. The later episode where Bobby wants to play baseball, and he’s absolutely trash at it. I think it’s one of the best episodes showing him being realistic with Bobby about his abilities, or lack of ability. Everyone was mad at Hank for not being supportive, while the coach was hyping Bobby up to an unrealistic level. Bobby eventually realizes, and decides to quit baseball. Now I think the episode wouldn’t have had a better ending if Hank offers to take Bobby to the park every Saturday to practice and see if he’s up for it next year.

That's the best part about KOTH to me, there was one episode where hank learned that bobby was taking shop class, and even bought him a junk car to repair up, and throughout the episode you can pretty much tell that it's not the fact that bobby was in shop class that made hank happy, it was the fact that hank could use it to bond with bobby more. There was another time where bobby joined a steak judging competition and hank was loving it, he bonded with bobby a lot from it, and when bobby decided he wanted to quit hank said "But we were so close" and it's meant to make you think that hank was saying it in reference to the competition, but instead it was because hank wanted bobby to be close to him. Hank is someone that I think a lot of people would be proud to grow up to become, even with his flaws.
@Amins88

My favorite episode that exemplified his relationship with his son in this way was the Propaniacs one. How he never typically understood Bobby's sense of humor, but went full force into his son's comedy when the subject was something he could relate to, which was also surprising as you'd think he'd be leery about making a mockery of his livelihood. And then the ending where Bobby's act was bombing with the audience, but it sent Hank into a fit of hysteria, and seeing his Dad's laughter was enough for Bobby.

The thing I liked about Kahn the most is that he specifically said he lived in California for 20 years before moving to Texas. Plus, he has pretty high paying jobs and his daughter is very well educated. His negative attributes are due to him being an abrasive and rude person (rest of his family is nice). The joke isn't "he's Asian, everyone laugh at his accent and culture" like the Simpsons did to Apu. The joke is him as a person and how his (pretty accurate) Asian American values conflict with white Texan values. As an Asian American person growing up in Texas, Kahn and his family was like watching my family on screen. I'm Indian American, and the other major Indian character on TV, Apu, was an absolute caricature and joke. KOTH did a much better job.
@joecrazy9896

@AM-tu1rc Apu isn't really bad, in my opinion. Guy is a successful business owner, is a very intelligent person, and is canonically more knowledgeable of American history than most of the people of Springfield. The man is shown to be a loving family man(except for that one episode where he slips up). He's pretty much the American Dream personified, I don't see how that's insulting.

There is a slight correction needed for the "Junkie Business" section since the episode does follow ADA guidelines regarding substance abuse. In the episode Hank fires Leon during the work day, tells him that he'll be counted as working through the day until 5pm, then gives him information on a local rehab center for him to look into. Leon registers with the center before his position is officially terminated at the end of the business day 5pm, meaning that he is technically covered by ADA guidelines and it does constitute as a violation since he was technically 'in recovery' at the time of termination.

That doesn't change anything, ADA guidelines don't protect someone going to work high and unable to do their job. Like she said he wasn't "in recovery" he was actively using everyday. At best he'd get 30 days to clear his system and be given a drug test. But since he was clearly going to work under the influence he could still be fired.

King of the Hill is a show that doesn't need to be animated, but the fact that it is animated is what makes it great. In Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud talks about how the simplified nature of cartoons vs more representational drawing styles helps with audience identification because its similar to the mental image we carry of our own bodies as we go about our daily lives. By using a cartoon style without any of the surrealistic elements that occur in almost every other animated show KotH allows for a level of immediacy that few other shows have. Combine that with the great writing and you have a show that is much more than the sum of its parts.

First of all: great video. Offers both a good perspective and funny jokes that aren't forced or boring standard stuff. I fully agree with another commenter that it's amazing how this seems to be one of your first and only videos. You're putting out really good quality for that. One thing I'd like to mention though: I don't see any issue with Khan. He certainly represents a stereotype, but in a show that's mostly driven by nuanced characters, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people match the stereotype of their demographics, and acknowledging that isn't discrimination or prejudice. If anything, it's a form of realistic diversity. Stereotypes don't come out of nowhere. And more often than not, they are based in reality. It's just that you should not let them be the bases OF your reality. And I think there's a good way in which Connie breaks the cliche and realistically integrates the family into both the alley and the real world. She might be a good student as a predictable result of her circumstances, but she's not a bland cutout stereotype. Nothing shows this more than the accent-free way in which she speaks as opposed to her parents. It shows the bit-by-bit integration process that is and has been reality for generations of immigrants. The Souphanousinphones aren't there to poke fun at asians in a cheap way, they're their own people with their own personalities and they add a lot to the show. Regardless of the sensibilities of people in the 2020s.

It took me awhile to “get” King of the Hill’s humor too. I think the issue here is that, without context, many of the jokes don’t stand up on their own. But if you understand who these characters are, the jokes will stick because of course (insert character) would say that or think that. That’s how someone like me ends up laughing hysterically over Hank Hill reading the newspaper in the morning and thinking it’s interesting enough to state out loud that they’re putting up a Yield sign somewhere in town. That is only funny because Hank said that. But very funny because Hank said that.

QUICK NOTE: I neglected to mention that in "Junkie Business," there's a line that mentions Leon qualifies for the ADA because he entered rehab a half hour before he was fired. My bad for the oversight. But the ADA literacy was only a small part of my greater point, which is that the episode's entire plot is based on making fun of disability accommodations at work. Apologies!
@ObliviousAdobo
Жыл бұрын
I think that's a bit reductive to just say making fun of disability accommodations. It was making fun of the people who take advantage of the disability accommodations at work as well as Hank's soft bigotry that caused him to hire Leon over Maria in the first place. (Mario? I remember part of the joke was her name was spelled with an O so he expected a man.) Had Hank hired on actual meritocracy like he should have he wouldn't have had to deal with someone abusing the system against him in the first place.
@felix_3471

The idea of a pandemic of people taking advantage of disability accommodations is an EXTREMELY overdone trope that speaks to a fundamentally inaccurate worldview, as well as reinforces a fundamental tenet of modern violence against disabled people (the boogeyman of the malingerer). I feel like the more typical and enjoyable KOTH approach would at the very least not be so one-note and aggressively reactionary. Maybe have both a person taking advantage of the system and a real disabled person, and playing with that contrast. Or having having someone who is taking advantage of the system but has sympathetic reasons for doing so. Or literally anything other than an unthinking “ahh the malingerer epidemic ahh” in order to emphasize an unrelated plot point about discrimination that is also sloppy.

I think a greater discussion of weponized incompetence and or disabilitys would be useful to have. Having grown up with autism I've seen 2 schools of thought on how to deal with it. I delt very often with the beat the disability out of them but im very frustrated with the second toxic compassion. You need to recognize its difficult to overcome certain things but you still need to enforce standards. Bringing things back to what i feel is the heart of king of the hill.

I wonder what The Goode Family would be like if it was more like KoTH? Often, the latter's clash is tradition vs. progress, and it's a toss-up of which one wins. For instance, Hank learned to love organic foods. What if, on The Good Family, instead of starving their dog, why not have them as vegetarians but also know that their dog can't go that way? What if instead of coaxing their daughter to have sex, they give her a choice, and wonder if they're not being open-minded enough when she chooses abstinence? I dunno.
@phlpcockrell

I'd argue hank is very very seldomly portrayed as "wrong" even in episodes where he is, (i forget the name of the episode. Patch boomhauer maybe?) When boomhauer's brother is getting narried to boomhauer's lost love, hank turns on Boomhauer on a dime believing hes trying to sabotage the marriage. When it turns out hank is wrong, he admits it, but its instantly hand-waved away and never brought up again. 9/10x when hank is wrong, it's either ignored or Hank's wrong in the very beginning, but by the end, the world twists to make him right. Like when bobby becomes a model. Its set up as hank just being his usual self, embarrassed that Bobby has taken up something that isnt manly, but nope. Some bullies are going to pelt him with donuts. Bobby falls into a group that believes in tarot cards instead of buying baseballs cards like hank wanted? The group is a freaky cult that drinks dog's blood. So hank nearly always being right gives him very little room to grow or develop, which makes him less interesting than characters like Bill, Dale or even Kahn that actually get to be humbled and learn lessons, even if those lessons dont stick.

It's kind of a shame that The Goode Family didn't get the time to find itself, but it actually had some promise. The show's thesis is the struggle between knowing what is the right way to live for the good of the world, and actually being able to live up to it. Each member of the family live on different corners of the 'commitment/understanding' graph. Gerald and Ubuntu are both highly committed to trying to live green and to existing with a minimal footprint (with Ubuntu not fully understanding the reasons behind, and having intrests outside of enviromentalism.) Grace and Helen are opposite, Helen understands why Gerald lives the way he does and wants to as well, but she struggles with keeping up social pressures with the rich snobby environmentists in their circle. Grace had a lot of potential. She understands why her parents are so enviromentally conscious, but she also understands how a single family living well won't undo the damage that large companies/governments do that is well out of her control. So she rebels and wants to just live a normal life and enjoy American materialism. She understands, but she has no commitment to the cause. Hank's belief are actually pretty compatible with Gerald. You see a flash of it in the episode where he becomes a member of a farmer's co-op. He gains an appreciation of substainable farming, the benefits it has on the enviroment and the quality of the product. If he could get past Gerald's hippie-dippie attitude, and if Gerald can look past Hank's Texas-ness they reach agreement on more things than not. We all know Hank is one good conversation away from collecting rainwater for his lawn and installing solar panels. "It reduces the load on my air-conditioner and generates enough electricty to pay for itself after five summers? I could install it on the back roof so the waterman won't notice. You know how much he likes to gossip."

KotH succeeded and The Goode Family failed for the same reason. They were both written from a Conservative perspective. They have personal experience living life as Conservatives in rural-ish Texas and understand the nuances pertaining to it and how diverse the people they grew up with can be. But The Goode Family seems to be written for the sole purpose of satirizing Liberals. They have clear disdain for their values and no apparent experience with people close in their lives who hold them. KotH would do this as well, Hank's battles with Twig Boy or entitled hippies served similar purposes, but the show itself wasn't grounded on delivering these messages. The majority of The Goode Family's cast held those Liberal values as their sole defining characteristics, so it was pretty unavoidable.

34:15 Around this point (And following on The Goode Family segment) I'd like to note how interestingly human KoTH is (And how artificial The Goode Family is) by noting that KoTH is a rather conservative show, but takes a very social view of life and bases itself on the "Human" underneath everything. Hank's lens is a bit politically tinted, but mostly life tinted (Between trauma, social expectations, pressure, and simply his own comfort zone and familiarity) and that leads to him butting up against problems more under the ideas of "How does this relate to me?" and so we see a human tackle not only the issue at hand, but themselves, Hank often either learns to peek over his closed garden wall long enough to learn what's out there, and expands his horizons to incorporate it, or he puts down the pride and picks up some appreciation, but, it's not a show about someone simply being corrected because they were in the wrong, Hank has a lot of moments where he's in the right, he's got a moral compass, a firm position he stands on, and a decent sense for right and wrong, he just as often holds strong and is proven right, sometimes Bobby's open mind leads him down the wrong paths and Hank rescues him before he falls, but then you also get the flipside, where Bobby is willing to take a chance to make his life richer, and Hank warms up and accepts that there's more good outside his bubble. That willingness to accept change while still holding firm morals is really rare in writing because it often requires a few steps, acknowledging that you yourself aren't perfect, acknowledging the character you're writing is a "Person" who shouldn't be perfect, and then challenging (And maybe even defeating) yourself that you've put into your character in order to achieve character development and create drama and pay offs. The very human "Growth" that the characters are allowed to undergo and experience is something that not only needs to be in more media, but more lives. People ought to not be a push over about their values, and should listen to their instinct about right and wrong, but also shouldn't make their walled garden their prison. They should take the time to listen, to think about it, to really ask themselves the merits and values and not let rage or disgust or dismissiveness shut down every thought that doesn't conform to one's own biases. KoTH manages to (Most of the time) ride that line so well it's as if we're really experiencing a life in another timeline. I feel as if a lot of writers are afraid to pair truly negative or undesirable traits with characters who they either identify with, speak through, or otherwise "Represent" a demographic, out of fear it'll be seen as undermining or stereotyping, and as a result either make a character bland, a 'god' as the video puts it, or suffers a level of identity erasure by trying so hard to avoid being anything that may be seen as "Stereotypical", but then for the ones opposed to their characters they speak through, they often make them purely stereotypical, and more often than not, cartoonish in motivations and personalities, and more often than people realize, usually painted with personal biases the writer probably doesn't acknowledge, but feels justified in indulging in because they're using the "Bad guy" paintbrush, and let those negative feelings out, even if bigoted. We see this in Mike Judge's other works, with much more biting satire that are much more willing to paint negatively of things that "Aren't good" as per the voices of reason (Assuming one is even present) Greg Daniels really knows how to break a character down, and put them on an emotional journey, and when paired with Mike Judge's life experiences, makes just the perfect form of writing and characters, getting down to the very souls of each character.

I think F is for Family would be the closest show to King of the Hill, being a pretty down to earth show featuring very human characters. Although F is for Family's tone is significantly more depressing than King of the Hill's.

It's basically an American slice of life anime... and after living in Texas for eight years, I can say it's legit.

"He's a traditional Texas Republican, but his sense of decency means he would never espouse outright bigotry, even in the face of things that make him uncomfortable." What? Why is there a "but" here? There's no through line to this statement. How would being a Republican ever imply that he would "espouse outright bigotry"? That's just very dishonest thinking.

found this randomly today. this show is important for so many reasons and i adore it but it's not above criticism. i understand that some might be offended by aspects of it and i think they're 100% valid but this show is special in a lot of ways because there are no instances of intolerance being normalized or rewarded. i often think of conservatives through the lens of hank hill and it makes me smile to imagine how disgusted he'd be at their complete allegiance to trump and their lack of principles.
