Yesss I was waiting for this one! Are you going to do all the consorts and people who had near misses with the throne (I.e the Black Prince, Arthur Tudor, Empress Matilda, etc) next?

I mean, some of them died far too young to where we have no real gauge on what their personality and potential leadership style might've been like, so I highly doubt he would be able to cover all of them.

I love all the historic paintings, photographs, and other images this channel uses rather than random stock footage. Thank you for the hard work finding these out and editing it all together! It really brings the stories to life. I hope Jane Grey can get a mini episode for herself seeing as Edward got one.

Jane is not considered a monarch of England/Britain, Edward VIII is. I understand they were both uncrowned but Jane’s status as Queen is “disputed”

@@tomtinley3262William of Orange also got one. As did the princes in the tower. Jane Grey was a queen as much as several others. I’m not asking for a full hour long episode, but having a fifteen or twenty minute episode on a very interesting and often overlooked and misunderstood character would be good. She was actually as much a firebrand in her own way as Mary, albeit her opposite in religion. Given some of her statements if she’d managed to hold on to the crown we might have had ‘Bloody Jane’ rather than ‘Bloody Mary’.

Love your narration and documentary style. Getting straight to the point but still being very interesting with the details. Would you consider going backwards in time and starting with before William, the conqueror? Would really like to hear about the rulers before him and even into before England was united.

The UK dodged a bullet when he abdicated. If he had stayed, imagine the UK entering WWII with a king sympathetic to the nazis. History would have been very different! Not to mention he was just a spontaneous, spoiled, whiny boy with a very narrowminded world view due to his poor education, he was also not politically or mentally prepared to be a king.

It's undoubtedly hard to empathize with a Nazi sympahizer, and it is very much reasonable to conclude that the nation was long-term better off without him as monarch for that very reason, but even still it is difficult to deny that Edward's situation was certainly precarious. He clearly was not at all fit for the role he was born into, and the usual hardship and scrutiny that comes with knowing your entire life that you're the rightful heir to the crown certainly did not help matters for him and his personality either. In a way you could almost argue he was a modern day version of Henry VI, a king who didn't have the proper qualities to become as such but might've found success if he was allowed to venture into other venues. I can imagine if, for example, he was raised into becoming something like a fashion designer or an olden day "celebrity" figure of sorts, "Prince David" might be remembered a lot more fondly today. Alas however, the abdication of the throne to marry a woman was certainly a moronic and damaging one, and so even if you want to look at Edward as a victim of circumstance, it's still incredibly hard to speak positively about him for all the terrible decisions he made. As you stated in the video, one can only hope a situation like this will not arise again for a very long time (even if the continual existence of the monarchy itself is more or less in dispute these days as the world keeps looking more and more towards democratic/republican regimes and the monarch's power seems to get more and more diminished with each successive king/queen).

Thank you for your work. Please note it is a linguistic "quirk" that Magdelen College, Oxford, is not pronounced "Magdelen" but "Maudlin". At the top of the tower shown, since the early 16th century, at 6.00 a.m. on the 1st May, the College Choir sing a hymn in Latin to the congregation below. Please note before his abdication Edward lived at Fort Belvedere in Windsor Great Park not Windsor Castle. It nearly wrecked the career of Winston Churchill who was a regular visitor to Fort Belvedere. Winston supported Edward as king and was one of few supporters, it made an already unpopular Churchill, in his wilderness years, even more unpopular. He had returned to the Conservative Party after WWI. Was often in the US, a friend of William Randolph Hearst and was in the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street the day of it's collapse in October 1929. It ruined him and he to earn his living writing books and giving speeches. It was researching his book on his ancestor John Churchill, at Blenheim that he saw the rise of nazism. Britain was sleepwalking at the time and "Appeasement" fashionable this put the establishment at odds with Churchill. Winston taking the side of Edward was a brave but career - threatening move for him.

He was very vain. There is a tradition in British coinage that if the previous monarch faced left on the coinage, the succeeding monarch will face right and vice versa. Edward did not care for the traditional side profile and the few coins minted during his mercifully brief reign, he faced the same way as his father. His brother King George VI returned to the correct tradition which has been followed by Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. It shows how obsessed he was with petty things.

It’s AMAZING they must have the same genes as Harry is so like in character to Edward Needy , weak characters , dependant on his female companion , enjoyed the high life alcohol , involvement in politics such as Mosley , Hitler and Harry with the Aston Foundation CAUSING DISRUPTION , being used by people as they both had such a weak dispositions, didn’t like exerting themselves in work of any kind not having a clear insight in making a future for themselves with their own ideas being again dependent on someone , not true to his family letting them down , both were untruthful yes VERY SIMILAR CHARACTERS I’m sure there are a few other traits I’ve missed out JUST AMAZING THROW BACKS 🤷♀️

I don't know if Harry is fully aware of it, but they're definitely similar. Spoiled, not-very-bright prince who spends the first chunk of his life partying meets narcissistic American divorcee. He resigns from his place in the monarchy yet spends the rest of his meaningless life abroad either trying to re-gain a place within the monarchy or causing trouble for his brother the king (or future king) while also demanding special treatment for his undeserving wife. The only real difference is that Wallis kept her mouth shut about the family - she didn't write books or give endless interviews whining about what a victim she was.
