Henry is believed to be personally responsible for the deaths of between seventy and one hundred thousand people. His victims included his aunty (horrifically butchered) and two of his wives. He destroyed his church, largely to get its property. It is said he had one of his cooks boiled alive. Perhaps he is rivalled in villainy ONLY by Stalin, Hitler, Mao and Pol Pot.

The most iconic king of England, but Henry VIII was no saint, and I don't praise him as one. By the time of his death in 1547, he was the one king of England who had killed more people than any other monarch before or since. Queen Elizabeth I On the other hand, ended up using the fleet that her father had created to defeat the Spanish armada in 1588, and ruled for much longer time than her father did. She also united the people a lot better than Henry VIII had done. In my personal opinion Elizabeth I of England succeeded as a leader where her father had failed. Great info! New subscriber here!

He got us away from the evil political power that is Catholicism. The Vatican has the sexual age of consent at 12. Alter boys and priests live in the Vatican along with the world's biggest tyrant the pope. So whilst you maybe right as the religious upheaval you're talking about is the rebellion of the north which Henry overcame by the way, I for one am glad that England is no longer under the command of Rome. Catholicism is evil.

The two years between marriages to Arthur and Henry were horrific for Catherine. Her father (Ferdinand) refused to complete the dowry bestowed upon her marriage to Arthur. She lived in isolation and poverty, writing home to her parents that her clothes were threadbare and she and her ladies were literally starving. She wanted to return to Spain as a widow, but Henry VII held her hostage.

I feel the most sympathy for Catherine, because she gave 20 years of her life to this pathetic excuse of a man, and when someone younger, and more attractive, (debatable), came around as one of her ladies in waiting, he had no qualms about setting her aside like she was nothing. No wonder the women of the day favored this Queen so greatly over Anne Boleyn, who was considered to be a home wrecker.

One of the best books to read is "Henry VIII" by Derek Wilson. It covers the political and religious climate of the times. Of course his wives were an important aspect of his reign, but this book is not focused on his lovers and scandals. There's plenty to read out there about the wives (fiction and non-fiction), but a great deal of it is pure conjecture.

It has consistently amazed me how Henry is arguably the most famous English monarch and so synonymous with English royalty to this day; if one were to ask a sample of people with the most basic of a history education or people with no formal education but a passing familiarity with history, provided they knew something of English/ English & French/ Great British/ UK/ Commonwealth etc monarchs i.e. dating back to Saxon times, to name an English monarch, I think Henry VIII would be by far the most listed. What I find interesting is that it is from a wellspring of infamy, and little to nothing else, that affords him this notoriety. His accomplishments militarily were outweighed by his failures, as were those in his peacemaking or diplomatic efforts; he presided over very many executions, thousands, yet Mary who had a fraction of that number was left with the 'Bloody' moniker; he was if anything a cruel, murderous, tyrant, and yet he gets all the glory and attention and schoolkids can name his six wives yet know nothing of the English kings that, as this series has effectively shown, achieved feats worthy of praise and remembrance, that took skill, ingenuity, courage, or all three of these qualities and in many cases more besides, and yet their comparatively successful reigns are vastly overshadowed by that of Henry VIII. The one thing he did do though which ironically he does not get due credit for is the establishment of a church of his own country with the monarch, namely him, as the figurehead; the Church in Rome had done a good job of assuming the role of 'overseer' or 'ultimate authority' overall Christian kingdoms and their monarchs, when if one thinks about it, why should that be the case exactly? There is no such thing a Pope or anything along such lines in the Bible itself; kings are mentioned however, so the idea of an office superior to that of a divinely elected monarch - the prevailing idea at the time - makes little sense, and has no basis in scripture, kings should be free to rule their own kingdoms as they see fit, including the liturgical life of the people and the realm. So Henry was actually well within his rights to start, and rule, his own church in his own kingdom, from the very start, and Popes having power over monarchs in distant countries, which they never visited, but somehow retained supreme authority over all decisions there, is/ was an idea without any logical, or foundational, evidence or legitimacy.
@joeblog2672

Amazing! Someone else who types as much as myself! I would claim that Henry8 doesn't deserve any national credit for the split with the Catholic church. His motivations for such a split existed merely to serve his own ego maniacal purposes. It was purely coincidental that Luther was around the same time. If H8 had been 300 years earlier he likely would have made the same self proclamation as the leader of the English church. Either that or start a holy war by invading the Vatican! There is no sign whatsoever that he objected to the corruptions of the church which Martin Luther had been espousing. Indeed, H8 was very much against Luther initially and pro Catholic. Only when he wanted his divorce from Catharine of Arragon did he merely restrain his attacks on Luther and his following without any legitimate support for the cause. It is very likely that Luther's movement would have gained power faster under a more supportive ruler. I see H8 as an embarrassment to the monarchy. He reminds me a lot of Donald Trump except with far more unchecked power.

All of the Tudor Monarchs were each singularly exceptional to be sure. This video is the best for it's scope I think I have heard thus far. There are excellent Tudor historians which I've read. My personal favorite might be Alison Wier; biographies of people and events so thorough, detailed and well researched, that it actually seems odd that she wasn't there herself; extensively quoted, footnoted, with an enormous Bibliography so the reader can research many primary sources for themselves. I like how she challenges other material and would pose questions or even disputes claims regarding many diverse events citing insufficient evidence and exposing obvious fabrications. I also like that she tours with the reader through so much more than military campaigns and Noble Ecclesiastics; allowing the reader to see food, fashions, Palace and Castle interiors and furnishings, - even talking about the different pets which were owned. Henry's Fool, - Will Sommers is also included, - and much more that makes your reading experience so much more intimate. I, for myself, want also to know how the 'common' man lived. History in my opinion is SO very much more than Aristocrats, advantageous marriage alliances among the Nobles and war statistics. History for me anyway, is so much more than Country politics and confinements to the Tower. Alison Wier is singularily attentive to all the little personal things and Cultural folkways that actually make the reader, not just an observer, but an actual witness to the domestic half of history. Besides, if I were to magically show-up somewhere on the English frontier somewhere in the sixteenth century, and I had a choice, - one of pomp, title, and position in the Court, or as an apprentice Blacksmith or Tavern-keeper in some village or hamlet, - I know where I'd be happiest. Yes I know of the potential hazards, but History for me means that window through which I can wtness ordinary people living and dreaming, working, laughing, crying and loving, just like me.

Not an expert on Tudor history, but I'm wondering if Henry had Anne executed because he suspected that she had Catherine of Aragon poisoned. Hear me out...the Tudors were suspicious of poison in general. Anne had threatened to do this but the kicker is that, when Catherine died it was unclear to folks at the time what happened, and I think Henry had a "candlemaker" (catch all term) go there and preform an autopsy. See stuff on the "black heart." Henry said to Fitzhenry that he was lucky that Anne was dead because she would have poisoned him. Yeah, maybe that sounds like he may have been spouting off to cover himself from executing Anne, but you know he very well may have believed that Anne had Catherine poisoned. Just imagine for a moment how mad that would make him. But he played it cool? People assumed that when Henry got rid of Anne that she would go to a convent and were shocked when she got snipped. But think about it-even though Catherine dyeing was advantageous to the king, if anyone would have had her killed that would have made him unbelievably mad. In his deathbed and at other times, he let on that he knew the charge were trumped up obviously, everyone knew it. That's my theory on it anyway. No one will ever know for sure.

This is a particular issue with me as a misophone. There are millions of us. Our brains hear the noise over the information. I wish I could unhear it, but I can’t, so I legit can’t watch your obviously well researched and intellectually presented post.

Oh my, Chrissy. You “Misaphones” whatever the hell that is. You mean other people bug you how they talk? Turn off the sound and turn on subtitles. Do you seriously? Expect people to change how they TALK for you? Misaphone😂😂😂😂😂. Get over yourself.
