In November 1955 and the world's first fast breeder reactor in the Idaho National Laboratory would experience the worlds first accidental meltdown.
The reactor was designed and built to be a proof of concept for a reactor that creates more fuel than it burns. The project would ultimately be successful however it would highlight the difficulties for the reactor design type.
The Experimental Breeder Reactor or EBR-1 would become a National Historic Landmark in 1965, to reflect the importance of the project in atomic history.
